1200 points Vampires for a tournament.

Hi, there's a 1200 points tournament coming soon and I decided to take my Vampires in there. Three games are going to be played, the scenarios are Dawn Attack (Game 1), Meeting Engagement (Game 2) and Dawn Attack again (Game 3). The tournament is quite heavily comped, here's the restrictions:

* No Special Characters
* No Lord(!) Choices
* Max. 2 war machines
* Max. 1 Ethereal unit
* Max. 2 flying units (including characters)
* Max. 3 chariots (6 for Tomb Kings)
* Max. 30 shooting models
* Max. 3 same Core units which can shoot
* Max. 1 same Special and Rare unit (except High Elves)
* Forests block line of sight just like in previous edition. Movement through forests normally.

So that's lots of comps. I can't take my Ogres as I have only 300 points to spend on characters and... Well, that's not enough for Ogres. And my O&G are still not painted, so Vampires are The Choice. Anyway, there's the army list I wrote.

The main idea is to stick the Vampire and the Necromancer into the smaller unit Ghouls, which naturally is a bunker. The bunker is behind the horde of Ghouls, Wraiths are next to the horde. The idea is to rush towards the enemy and beat them in close combat, it's simple as that. wink The horde and the Wraiths are going to be buffed by Helm of Commandment and VDM. The Vampire doesn't cast anything unless I really need a couple of models more in my units or the characters get hurt. Sometimes he might cast a random spell if there's a good opportunity, but otherwise the magic is going to be done by Necromancer and his VDM. Sometimes he can shoot something weak with the Ring if he can.
So, what do you think about it? All comments are warmly welcomed. Thanks for reading! smile

Hello there

It's a competitive list for that points value and composition, no doubt. I feel that a scroll on the necro might be a more helpful choice over the stone, you never know when a big spell will threaten your general. The Ruby Ring is nice but the bunker will have a hard time getting line of sight most of the time if it's hiding behind the horde. A banshee would help against heavily armored foes.
Goodluck and let us know how you did!

Looks like a nice list. Only drawback is you lack a reliable unit of heavy hitter like GG. Ghouls would have a hard time agains armoured opponents.
Wraiths could do the job but they might get torn up pretty bad by enemy magic as in small battles like this it's hard to hide from enemy casters. If I were you opponent and saw a group of wraiths that large in a 1200p game I'd throw every dice I had against it and as you most likely know a single magic missile with high casting value could potentially destroy that entire unit.

It's a bit of a gamble but it could work.

Thank you for your comments. smile

@ Seneschal: You're right, Dispel Scroll might be better than Power Stone. Even though Lord level casters are banned, something evil can try to kill my Vampire. For an example, Lore of Death is much more dangerous against me as I can't have a Vampire Lord and his sweet Ld10. I'll replace the Power Stone by Dispel Scroll. About the Ruby Ring you might be right too, I've never used it before so I don't know how it works in practice. Maybe I'll drop it too, at least I have a couple of more dice to use at VDM.

@ Zhatan: I'm not too worried about magic. As the Lord lvl casters are banned, many people don't want to take more than one or two hero casters in their army (BSB is important for non-ItP armies). This edition is all about augments and hexes (and possibly some Pit of Shades and Dweller's tongue ) and lvl 1-2 casters have hard time when trying to get the only direct damage spells from the lore. Unless facing Lore of Fire the Wraiths are quite safe. In my experience I've noticed that a Ghoul horde with some good buffs (HoC and VDM) can beat armoured units too pretty well. And the Wraiths can of course go and do the thing.
