1250 'painted'

With the 8th edition, I'm only going to play with 'painted' miniatures. I've about 1250 'painted' miniatures:

- Vampire lord + max. 100 points upgrade

- Necromancer + max. 80 points upgrade
- Mounted necromancer + max. 95 points upgrade

- 20 Zombie horde
- 30 Skeleton warriors (Champion,Musician,Spearsd,Standerd bearer)
- 20 Crypt Ghouls (Crypt Ghast)

- 10 Dire Wolves (Doom wolf)
- Corpse Cart

I'm still reading the new rules, I'll post my full army list in the near future...

RE: 1250 'painted'

I applaud you for only using painted minis! It's a great incentive, and once you get a full army painted it keeps you from buying too many models on the spur of the moment.

My suggestions are to not go overboard with zombies as right at the moment the are worthless IMO.

I'd suggest more ghouls and perhaps a big unit of Grave Guard.

Most importantly have fun and play the game as often as you can! smile

A good solid choice, however I would not put a dispel scroll on your Lord, give that to one of your necromancers. Instead you could give him sword of might for some extra bite (heh, pun intended) in Close Combat.

You really only need one necromancer, two is a bit overkill IMO seeing as you only get 2D6 powerdice to split between them. Remove the mounted one, give the other one a dispel scroll and book of arkhan. smile But if you are aiming for keeping your army at 1250 pts, then remove the armour of night on your first Necro, give him Ruby Ring of destruction (or whatever it's called for 30 pts from BRB.) for some damage output, give the mounted one barding, remove the enchanted shield and add a power stone or dispel scroll.

Good solid choices. Zombies should be beefed up to about 40 with magic as fast as you can, because they won't last in Close Combat. The skeletons look especially nice, good solid block with good numbers, which your lord can raise to even more models. Great! The Banner of the dead legion wont do as much now as it did last ed, I would rather go with war banner on them. But dead legion might remove steadfast from your opponent.

(08-15-2010 01:33 PM)werner Wrote:  - 10 Dire Wolves (Doom wolf)

In my opinion, the Dire wolves are not that good in this edition, they can go warmachine hunting. Are they fast cav? I'm not that familiar with them as I never use them. If they are they can make the march move in the beginning to really threaten your opponents lone magicians and warmachines. Corpse cart is good to give the ASF to your troops. But remember that bound spells cost normal PD to cast now.

I hope my advice is of help to you.

Cheers,
Boo

Good idea to replace the dispel scroll...

Great idea for the banner!

Dire wolves: It's for keeping my army at 1250 pts... In the 7th edition I wasn't a big fan of the dire wolves...

I couldn't take a 'war banner' because it costs 35 pts in the 8th edition.
Can I take barding on the mounted necro?

RE: 1250 'painted'

I hate Zombies, but it's more of a personal thing. I only ever use my models when I raise them up out of nowhere. But plenty of people have success fielding a Zombie block from the get-go, so I can't complain too much there.

And you can take a Warbanner. At least until the next Armybook comes out. Games Workshop said in the Vampire Counts FAQ/errata that we should still use the point values for items that are in the Armybook. So the 25 Point Warbanner is a go, and I think you're going to need it with Skeletons.

If you had the models, I would say go all-ghouls. Skeletons don't really have the same hitting power, and they take a lot of damage in return because of the low WS. Plus, Infinite Hatred is really kind of useless on your caster lord, so you may want to scrounge the points for the Helm of Command. It can bestow WS7 on your Skeletons, at which point they instantly become more survivable than Ghouls. The extra +1 to CR is still nice with Skellies though, who really are the VC "anvil" unit.

And I say screw the Nightmare completely. A 4+ AS, which is what he gets with the Enchanted Shield/Nightmare combo, really isn't going to do him much good in CC anyway. If you reeeeealy want the extra Armour Save, then scrap the Enchanted shield and go with Barding (because it's cheaper that way). If your only model is mounted, then you kind of have to go with option 2 though.

Hope that helps!

I play with my painted models, so I'm going to keep the nightmare. But I don't see in the army book how I can add barding?

I've also 9 points left, any ideas?
