Abyssal Terror - Yay or Nay?

Long story short, tonight I found my box of missing models I've been searching for months. Inside, among other things, was my Abyssal Terror. I bough this back in 6th edition, and from memory it never saw the field of battle.

Quick glance at the new book, and this mount still look quite subpar compared to the other choices. If you want a flying mount, the Hellstead is much better. If you want a big fighty mount, better go for the Dragon. Plus it's an option for lord vampire only, making this inferior mount even less tempting.

So did I miss something here, is this as bad as I think? I'm not really trying to fit that in my army, but since I have the model I thought I could look at my options. But from the look of it, it's a big fat "nay".

You thoughts?

Well, the Zombie Dragon is over double the points cost of the abyssal terror- If you want a fighty monster mount for your vampire in under 3k pts, the Abyssal Terror is the only option.

If it had 4 attacks I would consider it, as is it's still too bad to really be worth taking unfortunately. Even with the upgrades it's not all that good.

RE: Abyssal Terror - Yay or Nay?

As I recall, that model isn't even very impressive looking ;c

I would use one if I converted it out of something cool looking perhaps (Since it is flavoured as the zombie-Frankenstein of other mount-class monsters, Hippogriff I'm looking at you!), just for fun, but I doubt it's there for any sort of serious play.

Sad it's only for Lord-class Vamps, especially since it really doesn't seem terribly appealing; Oh, a Master Necro can take it as well, I guess that might be appealing since they can't ride dragons, if you need a wee bit more smashy on your team.

Also @Lynks, Is it really that much worse at 3 attacks? It does have Thunderstomp, which is basically d6 free hits a turn, I mean, that sounds pretty decent to me, plus 3 maybe hits? I don't see the 4th attack really making that big of a difference Ghost

I'd say the best reasons would definately be 1) You like the model/converted a sweet one, and 2) General Pts allowance, it's just a cheaper 'Rawrrr!' mount.

Id say its a good excuse if you want to use the SoM Manticore kit in your army (or any other similar sized monster mount)

In 3k you can fit a naked SGK and a master necro on AT.

RE: Abyssal Terror - Yay or Nay?

I agree that the AT's more of a conversion project than a competitive army choice. I used to have one converted from the old helsnitch manticore, but with the lion head replaced by three dire wolf heads, ridden by the bald headed vampire model that normally rides a skeletal steed. I think I gave him the spear with a body impaled on it from the corpse cart as a lance. It was great. Gave that one to a friend of mine as a moving away present. If I do another, it will probably start with the plastic high elf griffon from the Islands of Blood box, maybe with one wing replaced by a bat-like wing, maybe two dire wolf heads, and a different tail, skulpt some stitching on frankenstein style, maybe work in an exposed rib cage, or a ripped open stomach with intestines streaming behind it. Not sure what I'd do for the rider, probably have to trim off all the high elf parts. Maybe chaos knight legs, manfred upper torse, replacing the staff with the lance from the zombie dragon? Would be a lot bigger then the high elf that usually rides it though, might not look right on the model....

Master Necro and Mannfred can take it now to and with the upgrades it's not bad, Armour penetrating or poison, both good for knights.Zombie1

Sadly Ghoul Kings can't take one, bit strange that!

RE: Abyssal Terror - Yay or Nay?

I've taken my rank and file killer lord on an AT a couple of time since the new book came out. I've been really happy.

I originally took him because it was a conversion project that I was really happy with and wanted to show off, but as luck would have it he fits in very nicely with the way I like to play.

The AT let's him see over units, so as soon as he's smashed the crap out of one r&f unit he can really pick and choose for the next target. Keeps him moving and let's him get where you want him to be quickly.

I had the VL on the AT zooming around the battle field with a pack 6 varghiest and a terrorghiest. It was flying scary death and I found it very effective. Having said that there are definitely armies/builds that would make me a sad panda, but it was tons of fun. Konrad
