Dimi's Vampire Counts army updated 26/05/2011, new Vargulf

Hello vamps Vampire3
this is my first post in this forum, so i hope i'm doing this right.
i'm very new to warhammer, i purchased my vampire counts spearhead box about six months ago and have done a fair bit of research on how to paint minis from various sites, but mainly been lurking here for my source of inspiration. have to say i love this site, love the look of it and the people here are very friendly. so to wrap it up, just want to say thank you to all of you, i learn everything from you guys, therefore i would like to share with you my growing vampire counts army. Konrad

RE: Dimi's Vampire Counts (growing) army

Very nice!

If I may say so, the shading/detail you've put into these models is astounding. I particularly like the skulls on the bottom of the Vlad base. I dunno why, but they just seem to fit. The only thing I can find about this army to gripe about isn't the quality of the painting/effort put into it, but the fact that the skeleton/Zombie unit seems to be walking around in bright sunshine. They're brightly lit, and the ground underneath (Thought looking decidedly frigid/desolate) is far too alive.

Two thumbs way, way up though!

Committing vandalism one grey model at a time! Grey must go!

Rob has come, Rob has browsed;
Rob has quite leisurely lounged
Upon my bed, upon my chair,
His fingers curled in my hair.
And bits of him are everywhere.
Sad am I, but he must leave.
So I sent him off just Yestereve.

Onikaigo, thank you so much for you compliment, as i said before.. the people in this forum are the coolest cheesygrin, also can you please give me a few pointers on how to make my base better/more appropriate looking? i did those bases from the article i got from the games workshop site on how to paint sylvanian bases, i however think that you are absolutely correct, my army isnt scary at all, now i know its because of the way i did the bases.. neutral

Awesome army. I especially like the zombies. They look quite realistic when compared to the GW ones. Besides that the base on Vlad is amazing. I like the way you made the base so it could be put on another bigger display base.

Very nice looking army, as the others say the shading on all of them and skin tone on the zombie unit is very good indeed. And an excellent Vlad. Nice work, looking forward to seeing some more Thumbs Up

Great work. You've put a lot of effort in, that's apparent in the minis. Very nice scenic base for Vlad, and top dollar zombies. The only thing I would say is perhaps your skeletons might benefit from a light wash of ink, devlan mud maybe, to bring out some of the detail on the bone. That said, the army looks really good so far, looking forward to more!

RE: Dimi's Vampire Counts (growing) army

wow! thank you so much for all the warm response!

@wolfie: thank you so much. the display base is really easy to make actually, just take a monster movement base (add/stack smaller bases if you want to make it higher), and then make a hill using putty/green stuff, and then while the green stuff is still soft, just pick various bits that you like and then push it into the putty so that part of it goes into the putty and then let it harden, and make sure you hollowed out part of it where you want your hero to be positioned.. and then add sand, paint, put grasses.. boom! you have a display base cheesygrin ow and i also brushed the grass so that they look wind swept, because of the way the wind is blowing Vlad's hair.

@Niko: i am currently working on painting 20 GG and a Vargulf... if the missus permits.. hopefully i'll be able to finish them soon, and i'll definitely post more, thank you so much for the response cheesygrin

@Mr. Saturday: thank you sir for the comment redface
now on to the important part.. before i made a mess, could you please give me pointers on how i should go about washing my skellies, do i wash their whole bodies, or just put it on the small crevices, and i suppose i should water down the devlan mud a bit, no? mind you i really admire the clean white look of the skellies like in Seldom's painting thread, and in the GW army book and am steering towards those look.. thank you Thumbs Up

RE: Dimi's Vampire Counts (growing) army

some washing tips!

I like to water down my washes in a 1:1 ratio, typically. Otherwise the ink tends to really pool and clump up, ruining some shading that you might have done. So, get a wet brush, lightly dip it in the ink, and let it run into the crevasses and do the work for you.

For your Skellies I'd recommend Devlan Mud.

As far as your question as to how to make your bases better, I'd find a theme you want. Do you want your troops to be marching through some desolate hill country (Which is what it currently looks like in my humble opinion) or do you want them marching through something more dead? As it is the bases are beautifully done, and the only thing I would have done differently myself is make more brown instead of green. It's the crisp green colors of the foliage that really make this feel too 'Alive'. It's my thought, personally, that any undead host sucks the life out of the neighboring flora and kills it by simply being near it.

On that note, what would really look cool, if you could pull it off, is have the front edge of the tray nice and green and then have the foliage die the farther back the base extends. To really show the effects of death as the host marches on. Thumbs Up

But basically, more brown/Dead things would make that feel more at home to me. But, again, the work you have completed is beautifully done so changing it is purely at your own risk.jester

Oni Thank you for the washing tip ! Thumbs Up .. will try it after i go home from work..
for the input on how to theme my bases.." any undead host sucks the life out of the neighboring flora and kills it by simply being near it." THIS! 100x this!... the way you picture it to me sounds really grim and cold, i think that would look perfect for my Ghouls unit!

thank you!
