Direction of the Army

I figured it would be important to formally decide what direction the army should take, so that no-one starts thinking of rules and ideas that are out of place with the overall vision. Already we are finding certain aspects that people disagree on, so if we resolve them we should be able to make better progress.

The possible directions I can see are:

The Undead Legion
In this army, all of the units are undead, and directly summoned by Nagash or one of his subordinates. These subordinates are most likely some form of Necromancer, but could be a form of lich. The focus is most likely a horde army, featuring skeletons and zombies as well as more elite troops such as undead ogres etc. The army is unlikely to have an organised or skilled feel, such as can be found in the more organised armies such as Empire or Tomb Kings, instead relying on weight of numbers.

The Cult of Nagash
A variation on the basic legion, this is my personal favoured option. The idea behind it is that Nagash is in a weakened state, and typically uses mortal and undead servants to do his bidding. These servents include Nagashi (alive and dead), Assasins (possibly vamparic in nature), Disciples/Acolytes and cultists who worship Nagash as a god, as well as providing enough of a living side to the army to distinguish it from the other undead forces. Again, this is very much a horde army, but could be developed with several elite and organised units, such as Nagashi. As The Inspector has pointed out though, this option may seem a little strange considering nagashs ultimate goal of destruction of the living, but I feel that insane cultists and mortal pupils are justifyed.

The Master Necromancer
This force makes use of a large number of necromatic constructs and undead creatures, drawing on Nagash's role as the ultimate necromancer. Suggestions include scuttling hands and wicker men, as well as necromatically enhanced versions of the basic skeletons and zombies. However I feel these ideas would be far better left to another, Necromancer army project, rather than the Nagash project, as I don't think Nagash is that type of necromancer (as an illustration, the construct necromancer is similar to a Necrarch; scholarly, isolated and constantly experimenting, whereas in vamparic terms I see Nagash as most akin to a strigoi; insane and filled with hatred, but accompanyed by mortal creatures that revere him as a leader (the cult of nagash, or ghouls in the strigoi case))

These are only three very lose summarys, and if anyone else can think of, or even suggest a direction they should post it here so we can decide on the best course of action and really get the project moving. As stated, I like the second option, as I feel it has alot of potential to create a unique army that is characterful for Nagash, and has a good number of ideas already attached to it. How about you lot?

RE: Direction of the Army

id like it to be about 80% no two.20% no three cause nagash does have the crazy cult of nagash and they might experiment a bit:grin:. (oh and can people comment on the lord, hero, special and core threads pretty please:mrgreen:so that stats can be made and making stats is funnnnn)

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.

RE: Direction of the Army

Thanks for doing this Avaris. I would have but my own workload was supreme because of a few things. I agree with you that the second option sounds best in this incidence...

The lives of the wicked should be made brief, and for the rest of us death will be a relief.

RE: Direction of the Army

I hate to resurrect these old threads. However, since I found my model of Nagash that I had bought back during 5th, swearing I'd be ruler of the world if I took him during a game. I would have to say that I like the undead legion. It could easily be based on a similar concept like the Storm of Chaos list where Archaon just has an over abundant number of models that just keep coming. IMHO he's been hiding for thousands of years, he has to have a lot of low level troops with a few necros to move them to war.

RE: Direction of the Army

i think it should be evenly split between human/Undead/Etheral instead. to repreasent Nagash through the ages. He was human once when he siezed power, and was Undead before. When he's body was destroyed and needed time to recover he was Etheral.

RE: Direction of the Army

Just a quick note. The old polls and finished discussion threads were taking up space, so I created a sub-forum for them to go into.

Disciple of Nagash, the perverted master,
The more you struggle, the more he goes faster.
Give him breast, and give him bust,
The more you give the more he thrusts.
And as you all shall soon see, there is nothing that he will not conceive
Whether dark or whether weird, its guaranteed to make you real
But in the end we all see, he is the forum master and perverted seed.

RE: Direction of the Army

I think some combination of the second and third would be a good direction.

One pull factor for the army is the inclusion of master necromancers and the fact that some people were disappointed by their removal from the VC list. Also the inclusion of living units makes a good distinction between this list and the other UD lists, as well as giving the army a lot more tactical options in the movement phase.

One thing that the undead used to have is rightful claim over the word 'evil'. The DE were cruel and vicious, goblins and skaven were sneaky and annoying, chaos were corrupting and inevitable, but the servants of Nagash chose to be evil, they wanted to kill everyone and raise them back up. Then the VC 5th & 6th separated the storyline a bit, the Necrarchs were the crazy evil ones whereas the others were driven by vengeance. Now the storyline has gone wholly towards vengeance. Warhammer once again needs an army with genuinely crazy men in it who just want to hurt everyone... Enter master necromancers. smile

RE: Direction of the Army

I didn't even realise this thread was open.

Thanks for your feedback TZS, luckily we are creating a list not too far from that with a Disciple of Nagash (yes my namesake) playing the role of a master necro etc.

However as we are well into making the list, this discussion now seems obsolete, so......
