Fimir Mage

Hi Folks,

First time I've posted pics of my minis, so hope I don't get flamed! :|Inspired by Mr Saturday's thread on this forum, and the bestiary of the storms of magic book, I wanted to put together my very own retro Fimir sorceror to use in my games. I had the Heroquest model as a basis, and a pile of scavenged bits and bobs. So to begin...

I love this old mini, but he looks his age!

I used an Orc standard segment for a thread o' lucky charm skulls, the GW zombie kit polearm to make staff, and severed heads for belt at his right hip, with a sack of body parts on his belt from the Mantic Ghoul set on his left hip.

Cloak poached from Mordheim henchman!

The painted model, still got to be based. Tattoos and magic staff glyphs freehanded on, but don't show up too clearly on the photos. First time trying these, more used to painting things without a pulse!

The before and aftersmile I haven't really done much to him, but I definitely think he looks like there's more magical funk going on now...

Stepping into the swamp... Glossed over the front of the base darkangels green and stippled bestial brown to try and get a shiny water effect for brackish swamp juice. First attempt at this - will need refinement!

Getting the magic on!

What to paint next? I've been painting the Undead for years - I really enjoyed having a crack at something different here! The Storms of Magic book seems an excellent avenue to to getting your paint on and still contributing to your army, which I always try to do as I paint like a snail and not nearly often enough!

Comments (and criticisms) welcome!

Nice one Darkside, I like the skulls, the match the pose of his left arm well. I painted one of the old Heroquest fimir at the start of the fimir project, but man, hacking off his base! The plastic they used seems to be mixed with some form of concrete. Glad you found some inspiration from my fimm, I should have some new ones shortly, now work has eased off.

I agree! That base was made of steel - thought my knife was going to snap! Looking forward to more Fimm pics; I know the Fimm sorceror should be female really (a meargh?), but I couldn't bring myself to green stuff boobs on to him... it just seemed wrong!

RE: Fimir Mage

There are male fimir sorcerers, the dirach, who are less powerful than a meargh. The fimir in Storm of magic is a dirach, they have the horns.

Very cool! I was thinking about using that model as I have plenty, but didn't have any inspiration. Plus I was kinda digging the ogre-sized version, some of those old models are sweet! But your conversion is quite simple yet very effective, I might go dig one out of the box and have a go at it grin

Quick question, did you used a 25mm base for him, or regular 20mm?

Hi Mioum,

I cut the front off his base and stuck what was left onto a 25mm base to give the 'step' to show some swamp water (plus as Mr Saturday says, that base is thick...) IMO the model would look seriously cramped on a 20mm base - he's just too big. I don't think GW have specified a base size for the model, so go with what fits best I say!

RE: Fimir Mage

Frittering about for the last couple of days, waiting for things to happen, so decided it was time to get my paint on! After painting the Fimir Mage, I was in the mood for something else a bit different from the usual Undead stuff.

I hit upon this guy, another denizen of Albion. I reckon I'll call him 'Conan's Dad' as he looks like a tiny Ron Perlman in furs...

Not my best paint job, Bit disappointed in him to be honest. I thought a guy with a beard that long must be knocking on a bit, so tried to show his beard and the hair at his temples shot through with white. Slapped on the highlight way too heavy though, should have built up some layers gradually instead. I also committed the cardinal sin of getting stuck in without prepping the model properly first surprised which is why he has a honking great mold line down his leg... shocking! The photo aint great either, making the whole model look rather 'yellowy'.

To hell with it though, he was fun to paint and makes a worthy adversary for my Fimir Mage to battle against in the misty wilds of Albion cheesygrin

RE: Fimir Mage

I haven't tried one yet, but if he's too tight on a 20mm base I'll definitly go with a 25mm, I love me some breathing space on my bases! As for the molded base being thick and hard to cut, I already looted 2 Mummy from the same game for my Tomb Kings, and the GW plastic cutter works wonder on getting rid of it, so that shouldn't be a problem grin But I quite dig keeping some of it for a swamp effect too, will have to see if I copy 90% of your idea or 98% of it :p
