Firefly/Serenity

Hey everyone,

9 years after this show was cancelled there's still efforts to resurrect it. I'm curious as it's a sci-fi show (many geeks like us are into sci-fi) how global did this show make it? I'm wondering who has seen it and who has not. Likely my favourite series of all time (possibly only beaten out by Season 1 of The Wire).

RE: Firefly/Serenity

FIREFLY IS THE BEST SERIES EVER MADE!!!!!11!! sorry, but I really liked it. Me and my brother watched it, and the film, some time ago and both loved it. He found out about it from some geeks in Nynäsham (we live in Stockholm) and we have been spreading it too most geek societies we've encountered ever since. So it has clearly made it to Sweden.

Having it resurrected would be the greatest thing ever, it would be like a thousand Christmases at once (only the nice part, not the stressful part). I always shed some tears we I think about the series because there are so few episodes cry
Please tell me that this is not false, I don't want to get my hopes up for nothing.

RE: Firefly/Serenity

There have been many attempts to resurrect the show; that's how the movie was made. Don't get your hopes up though, I'm just trying to understand it better myself. Initially it was an issue with poor advertising I think.

The movie wasn't very commercially successful however. It has seemed to me that almost everyone who has watched the series has loved it; so I was very confused as to how such a show was cancelled in the first place, and why attempts to get it going again always fail.

I've watched the series probably 3 or 4 times now, and it's so good. If it runs on TV, I change to that channel just so it looks like there's another person watching, even if I go off and do something else. Anyways. No show has ever grabbed me like this one did. I think it was how subtle it was; tons of things were written in that you never thought twice about but had meaning (do you remember in the show when River goes crazy and starts taking the labels off cans of food? Yeah, that had meaning.)

Although I do not share Mad'at fanatic (and scary) devotion to the serie, I do really love it! The movie was also quite entertaining and I would love to see a ressurection!

Than again, I would alsolove to see a high-budget ressurection of Buffy, Power Rangers, Duck Tales and Dungeons and Dragons (the animated serie). Zombie3

RE: Firefly/Serenity

The reason for cancelling the show was simple: the Firefly effect
Basically: if a new series come to TV some wont watch it because they think it will probably be cancelled. If a lot of people think that way then it dose get cancelled. This exactly what happened to firefly (the first series it happened to, hence he name). People how saw it just figure that they would love it to much and get their hearts broken. They were right...

The films failure might be because the hard core fans thought they would only be disappointed (sequels often do that) and the ones who had not seen the series didn't get the film. Just speculating here though.

EDIT: I might just be a bit fanatical redface

RE: Firefly/Serenity

Seen the series a couple of times and absolutely loved it.
The thing I love most of all though is the multitude off references in other series. Castle especially seems to be full of them. Nathan Fillion takes every opportunity he gets to put in some obscure reference that only die-hard firefly fans will notice. smile

Best series/movie, EVER

I found out about it a while back when I was talking to my Uncle about Castle. He then told me about it and I went home and gorged myself on it, literally! Would be like the greatest day of my life if it came back! cool

RE: Firefly/Serenity

Figured that was your thread (since we were talking about this yesterday wink ).

Definately one of the better tv shows for sure. Would be nice to see it back on the air again. Though after nearly a decade it seems pretty unlikely.

RE: Firefly/Serenity

I never saw the series only the movie and I'm not sure if it was meant as a stand alone movie at all but it made sense to me as such. Still I'm not to impressed with story nor actors. Actually at the time I saw it I hand no idéa it was originally a tv-series but I immediately got the tv-movie vibe from it. It was watchable as I like sci-fi but it didn't strike me as something remarkable.

RE: Firefly/Serenity

Series was better than the movie. The movie was OK but much of it wouldn't make much sense without watching the series I think.

Firefly was axed because, like all Whedons shows, it needed a lot of viewer thinking...see Dollhouse, Buffy, etc
but the advertisers just didn't want to wait for results. He makes great, but long term, tv, which doesn't pay off fast enough.

I loved it! And I'm one of those still hoping for a revival somehow. I tend to tell everyone I know who vaguely likes sci-fi to check it out.

And most of them repeat what I just aid; I loved it!

RE: Firefly/Serenity

I need to watch the series, I managed to watch the film and enjoyed it immensely - I didn't realise there was a series at the time cheesygrin I am torn personally. It would be great for it to come back, but I would say I think it would be better if it didn't make it back. Simply put, I think it is best to leave the audience wanting more, than it is to spoil something good by getting it wrong. That way the fans will always be able to muse on what could have been, and we can all use our own imaginations to flesh out the universe, something that would probably give more pleasure in the end than a new season that might not fit everyone's expectations. That's just me I guess

RE: Firefly/Serenity

Buffy won numerous critical awards and acclaim.

They had a musical episode, and an entire episode without speech.

Buffy actually was pretty good Zhatan. On the surface it just looks like a cheap monster of the week show, but that's not what drove the show or the fans.

RE: Firefly/Serenity

Buffy had to be good. The networks kept trying to axe it, advertisers hated the demographic, most people didn't understand the mythology of it, but yet..... it ran for seven seasons, and the spin off ( which kept inter-linking ) was Angel, which ran for five seasons. It takes more than pretty teenagers to run like that- serious kudos to the writing team. And season eight is available as a graphic novel. How cool is that? Even if she did dust vamps.......

RE: Firefly/Serenity

I watched the film cause my dad made me.....and i liked it, despite having no idea what the backstory was, my dad liked the tv show but it wasnt until years later that he told me there was one, ive recently bought the season 1 collection and am enjoying the show, but im sad that there is one season only, IMO i think the effort to get the cast together and think of ways to outcompete shows like Game Of Thrones would be too much im afraid.

@Grish, hairyjeff
I never said anything about buffy being good or not. Just commented on the thinking part as Buffy episodes require about as much thinking as an episode of Xena.

But now that you mention it... I would never in a million years call Buffy a good show. It was watchable and slightly amusing from time to time.
That it was successful I do not doubt and it surely made money for the creator of it but that, to me, does not qualify it as good.
