Has anyone painted a bakarathi hunter before?

Hi all,

I have finally got my replacement Varghulf model, Reapers own bakarathi hunter. However now I am at a bit of an inspirational roadblock.

I havent been able to find a single painted photo of him and I am a little stuck for ideas.

That be the model I am going to paint, I would be grateful if someone who has painted it before could put up a pic or for some ideas. The "breast plate" is going to be exposed muscle (red pink ish) but I am not really sure how to go about the other bits.

In fluff terms is a Lahmain (sp) vampire who was infected by a blood curse and has degenerated into Varghulf state. Weird fluff I know but I am currently in an escalation campaign with story attached and it fits in with the whole plot.

it is gorgeous! It is very similar to the Striga beasts in the Witcher pc game.

RE: Has anyone painted a bakarathi hunter before?

For exposed muscle i recently tried something new with my black knights from mantic. the horses have exposed muscle much like the new dire wolves of gw. ANyway I used Morden blue foundation on all the muscle then applied a red ink at 100% from andrea paints. the inks give a shine and a little translucent quality that lets just a small amount of blue to come through.

THis may sound a little odd but if you were to skin a fresh killed animal you will find hints of blue in the muscle just like they show in anatomy books. I will get a picture up later, of my model not a dead animal. Konrad

Thanks for the suggestions people. I will ponder on it and attack a test model with some paint tomorrow hopefully. I have between 14th Sep and 12th October to get him finished so I wont be rushing into it.

RE: Has anyone painted a bakarathi hunter before?

So Ive gone with a rather dark hue for starters

Im not 100% sold with it but I didnt have an inbetween colour that was darker than Khemri Brown but lighter than the shade I used, whilst avoiding it looking too brown. Without dissing my lack of painting skills what is the consensus on the colour? Does it fit with the model or should it be much brighter? I know that there are problems with the paintjob and that there are better techniques I could employ, I am more interested in getting the colour right first though.

The more I look at it, the happier I am with it. Oh and ignore the green on the base, that is getting redone and was only washed in green to stop the nasty white base colour from distorting the picture.

I like the colours you have chosen! i rly like the way you ve painted his chest too. I think its going well Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Also i think you should shade the skin a bit more, try mixing some black ink/wash with your brown, also add some water to it. Mix some black or white if you want to make it lighter or darker. Btw i think that Glaze Medium, from Vallejo colours, can turn every colour you mix it with to a wash-like colour. After you apply the wash and let it dry you can drybrush it hard with a lighter colour, then drybrush again with an even lighter colour. Try to look at it trough the mirror, a different point of view tongue

I painted him up like so;

Went from a dark brown to a very light tan and then washed with the dark brown base color. Still needs to be based, but I like it as a vargulf.

RE: Has anyone painted a bakarathi hunter before?

This thread is making me need to paint mine now, (if I didnt have enough to paint). My problem is I wanted to use him as a gorger but I agree he would make such a great vulghulf, sigh ill buy a second one for the ogre army now. He is looking really good, I love the red on the chest is it very realistic.

If your planning spirit hosts we have a monthly challenge in February that I would love to see what you would do for them.
Spirit host challenge.

RE: Has anyone painted a bakarathi hunter before?

Cool paint job, a little lighter than I was going for. I will start work on mine again this week sometime. I have a few things to paint at the same time and about a month to do it so I am not going to rush.

I think I will try and integrate a bit of deep purple into the skin hue to bring a bit of depth to it, hopefully without drawing too much distinction between the two colours. I may even post a few more shots back here.

Oh and thanks for the nice comments about the red.
