Well it's time again for another mini!

For those of you who don't already know, every month I enter a competition run by my local GW called The Brotherhood of the Brush. The rules of engagement are quite simple really. Each month a new model is assigned. It's usually picked by the winner of the previous month and must be within a budget of £12 (I think that's about $19 USD), and then painted to the best of our ability. The winner then chooses the next month's model which they get for free. Not bad really!

Last month, if you missed my last plog, was an Eldar Farseer of our choosing. Unfortunately I came a close second, which is probably a good thing seeing as I was struggling to find a mini I really wanted to paint within budget. Anyway, to cut a long story short, this month's model is Huron Blackheart, Chaos Lord and leader of the Red Corsairs. Ok so maybe it wouldn't have been my first choice as Abaddon is within budget, but the beauty of the competition is that it forces to paint models you wouldn't normally consider, and, like all competition painting it really hones your skills.

Right so back story over, it's time to get on with the show. I've just got the model and have had a look. Once I've got rid of the bleeds and mold lines I'll prime him and start taking pictures. So yeah that's about me done for the minute. If any of you have suggestions for a nice scenic base, feel free to contribute. So far I have two ideas. The first being a concrete wall with a large sewer pipe in which his little creature thing will sit. The second with be him standing atop a dreadnought arm/carcass or similar.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with the Huron miniature. Your Farseer certainly turned out impressive even with the time restraint that you suffered from.

I got one of him to paint too now you must paint him so I can steal idea's. I mean get inspirition. Looking forward to this untitled.

Ok guys,

Just a quick update! I've decided to do him on a scenic base. I was looking for things Chaosy and decided that given he has the funny naked rat thing, it'd be quite apt to do a sewer pipe.

This is what I'm using as my inspiration:



Once I've peeled the glue off my fingers and it's dry enough I'll take some pics and show you all the work so far!

What does anyone think?

Looking forward to this one, I like Huron a lot(even considering a Red Corsairs army to paint one of these days), cool model and nice fluff behind him. Here's an idea for the basing, utilize his background as a pirate fleet master, I assume he'd spend a lot of time on a ship? I was thinking steel grating and tubes, pipes, bulkheads, and the like.

That competition sounds like fun. Perhaps a similar competition can be adopted by Carpe Noctem.
Nice basing idea. Perhaps you can include a slaughtered eldar guardian or striking scorpion or something (to link it with the previous iteration of the competition)

Hi one and all,

Many of you are probably wondering where on earth I've disappeared to. To be honest I am too. I've just been insanely busy as I've just started my Initial Teacher Training. Talk about losing your days and evenings! In fact I'm a little bit worried that I'm not gonna get the model done for this month. But friends, not to lose sleep! Regardless of whether or not I do, I will continue this plog until the project is completed! I will hopefully have a chance to pick up the brushes this weekend and get a decent amount done!

As for the base, it's nearly done on the sculpting front. I will (as soon as I leave my girlfriend's) take some piccies for you all and get them up here! As for the main man, like I say, I'm hoping to get a little done this weekend. I've already removed the slotta from the bottom and drilled a mounting point. I've decided I'm gonna paint him without his backpack and power fist to make life easy! The Hamaydra (as I've finally discovered it's name) is just about to undergo a little bit of base rounding to make it fit into the sewer pipe.

That's about it. I'll have some pictures of progress, or lack of as is the case, on here by this evening so you can start throwing some thoughts, ideas and criticims into the melting pot!

As promised here is a pictures of the base. It's made using the following:

A small coffee jar lid with a piece of plastic pipe
A plastic rectangular thingy
Some heavy bolter parts
A Plastic bottle
Some broken up mortar
A round base
Cardboard
Greenstuff
PVA
Superglue
Wall Filler

What do you all think?

I think it looks pretty damn good! The effect you have is perfect, look very forward to seeing it painted.

I'm not quite sure about what to do for the top. Do I do like a torn up road, general rubble and detritis, or just plain concrete with little bits of stuff here and there?

Thoughts and ideas please!

Wow, that's a lot of work gone into one base. But then again if it's for display it's probably worth it.
I'd go with broken road for the top. Some broken eel reinforcement should be easy to add and some rubble should be easy as well.

You'll be pleased to know that I've now primed Huron and will be starting him later this evening. The base has now been weighted and is currently drying in the airing cupboard. Photos tomorrow!

Just a quick update.

Progress is slow. The competition deadline is a week tomorrow and I'm miles behind schedule! I'm not gonna rush to get it done, cause it kinda defies the point. I might even be able to enter it into another competition somewhere else.

Anyway, I'm currently painting the base up. I've done it in such a way that Huron just slots in on pegs. One question I did want to pose to you guys was what colour should I do the drainwater/sewage/slime/gunge/ooze or whatever it is?

Any ideas would be very grateful!

Some brownish green would be nice (that's probably not the correct word for sludge, but anyway that's not the point.)

I would go with drarky green, not too brown, maybe a bit of blue in there.
