Tawg's Mortis Engine (WIP)

Not terribly much else to say, I'm rather excited for this model though! Started painting yesterday, then went to paint some more today and found that I have misplaced or lost my brushes.. oops Ghost

I've only got a bit of work on the Spirit Host done so far, as you see; I rather dislike when the whole 'Blob' of host is a solid colour, and even less when it's solid with just the metal picked out, so you'll be seeing quite a bit more details pick out on mine. It's basically an experiment anyhow so we'll see how it ends up looking.

I also think I'll be painting the 'Bone cage' around the Reliquary.. bone colour, as well most of the carriage, but with stone work for the slate looking ground-work of the carriage. Gonna pick out the flowers as actual flowers, rather than stone work & the vines. I think the fires will be a deep purple to rich blue/light blue kinda blaze? Probably won't be able to do any OSL since I have not even tried on anything else yet, and should rather not try to mess up this extremely cool looking model.

The Necro I'm unsure on for his colour, perhaps a dark black/blue> grey cloak? Or maybe he would look good closer to a deep red/black colour. Unsure on him, probably be better to pick out details with the deep red, and keep him in the more purple/blue spectrum primarily dark grey.

So yea, I think that's most of everything about the model? I am kinda writing this all out for myself more than anything, keep me in line and on track (Hopefully, or at least let me know what I was planning xP)

So yeah, gonna grab some brushes tomorrow since I am just counting them as MIA, and maybe I'll get a little work down on the Spirit Host closer to completion?

Sounds like you've got some really good ideas mapped out. I'm excited by how you've described painting the spirit host. I too am a fan that spirity things should not be clad in ironmongery. What would by really cool is if you could somehow create a unified spirit look but make each garment look like it once had a colour. You could even experiment with heraldry on shields and horses and the like.

I'm intrigued...

I'm interested in seeing this, as I've seen quite a few Coven Thrones, rather than Mortis Engines, and I'm intrigued by your idea. Let's see how it fans out - I'll be watching!

I paint, I swear!

Not really, like hardly ever:

Nothing like taking pictures to make you realize how bad you're doing (Or your camera is Ghost )

I am trying desperately to not use metallic paints.. at all; Which raises an issue for me, since I have not really done NMM at all ever, so I'm pretty much winging everything I do so far; Luckily I don't feel too bad about doing sub-par at this stage, or on this spirit host in general since after I finish bringing the details up to a highlight I want (Which is most likely going to involve painting like normal but with a little more grey tone at the highest high-light) I'll be ink/washing it to give that 'Ethereal' touch.

Hopefully if I manage to not be a complete moron, I'll end up with a spirit host that looks cohesively 'Ethereal' while retaining a specter of what they'd look like without the 'Ethereal' touch.

Or this might end up disastrously, in which case you'll all know not to do this!

Anyways, do those three shields look decently well? Eh I dunno, I might need to finick with them a bit; Anyways bland up-date.

RE: Tawg's Mortis Engine (WIP)

Hey while I'm here, quick question: I'm actually quite enamored with glowing eyes; Would it be a terribly bad idea to set the stage for my army with glowing eyes, by giving any skull involved on this 'Spirit host' a bit of the glow eye. Undetermined colour, most likely to be set to the same 'Fire' as the rib-cage braziers and general Mortis Engine glow-factor. Maybe blue, or green. Much of my army has a very brown palate so far, so preferably a colour that wouldn't throw that too far.

The shields make me sad, I just wanna go back to painting the bone Ghost

Not at all it would be a good idea imho. I suggest a green glow!

Shadow, Codex, Adeptus Battle, and Astronomican; The last two being foundation paints. It's funny though because the whole model was primed with bone, (See the bone colour on the planking of the wooden shield?).

It's alright though, I am ashamed but, I'mma just use metalic paints cry

Besides, if I use metallic paints, I'll have less qualms with parting with it, since I do intend eventually to sell it if I am able. I just rather would like to be good at NMM, but I need to put in a good amount of practice before I get there Ghost

Maybe you should do some more highlighting on the shiels, and apply a wash of badab black (this is a musthave). I´m probably not the best person to advise you in this matter, as I was the one asking about NMM in my own plog lol
You shouldn´t give in to soon man, but If you´re really through with the NMM than use some boltgun metal and highlight up to silver, while shading with badab black. and use a thraka green wash to ty it all together.
Good luck on the mortis engine Thumbs Up

Naw, not giving up; More like... not painting a center piece of an army with an advance technique I have never used before.. lol

I seriously have put no work into it, so I really shouldn't be using it on such a large/quality mini. Plus metallic paints aren't that disgraceful Gravestone.GIF

RE: Tawg's Mortis Engine (WIP)

I redid the Shields with metal Gravestone.GIF I also decided that one of my brushes is now the 'Metallics' brush, because I don't want to risk messing up any of my nice ones Zombie1 Also put in some work with the (Last?) high-light on the bone.. I think?

Plus those sweet three skeletons

Man, they are sexy; So I'm trying to make each part/detail/material on the Spirit host distinguishable and.. not all just green/blue Ethereal blob, since that bothers me greatly (I mean com'on, look at all the detail someone went through the trouble of sculpting for this thing!!), but at the same time I am trying to make it a unified Ethereal.. blob.. So my (Possible) solution I'm looking at going with right now is glazing a very thinned down layer of grey (Or 5) over any non-grey part to help tie it together (Basically to give the 'Ethereal' green/blue glazes a more common base to create uniformity).

I tried it on this skull, although it might be hard to see:

I realized very quickly that using the Astronomican grey (A foundation) is probably a bad idea, since the pigment ratio makes it simply cover up another colour easily, so I think the glaze will be of Codex Grey? Similar, at least it's the lightest non-foundation grey I have at any rate.

The alternative (And I'm not which I'm going with yet) to that idea, but to tie things together, is to make an additional 'High-light' level that is a mix between what ever colour the item is, plus a very light grey to make it more uniformed with the back-drop 'Ghost Miasma' they are all.. flowing in and around. I'm not entirely sure, I may have to (God forbid) use a test model to see the results for both on a larger scale (The skull doesn't properly represent what will happen to one of those fine, whole, skeletons if I glaze them with grey) before I go ahead and ruin something, like I love to do;

Anyways, progress was made, however little, and that is a score (Since I normally do nothing over painting Ghost )
