The Purple Sun of Xereus

I may be going mad.

So may everyone at my local GW.

But it seems to us that there is NOTHING whatsoever in the spell description OR in the rules for Magical Vortexes to say that the Purple Sun actually hits everything in its path, and it should just hit where it lands.

The problem with this theory is that everyone has so far been playing it as it hits everything in its path, and taht if it didn't it would be, well, a moving Pit of Shades (for a higher cast value) with no fundamental difference.

Perhaps we're missing something, anyone clarify?

"...once the template is placed, the player then nominates the direction in wich the purple sun will move..."
"...Any model touched bythe template..."

The template moves, it not just deviate. And every model touched by it is affected.

Well thats how people are interpreting it but it doesnt specifically state that anything in its path is affected, just anything touched. It really depends on how you interpret "move".

Merriam Websters Dictionary Wrote:Definition of MOVE
intransitive verb
1a (1) : to go or pass to another place or in a certain direction with a continuous motion <moved into the shade> (2) : to proceed toward a certain state or condition <moving up the executive ladder> (3) : to become transferred during play <checkers move along diagonally adjacent squares> (4) : to keep pace <moving with the times> b : to start away from some point or place : depart c : to change one's residence or location
2: to carry on one's life or activities in a specified environment <moves in the best circles>
3: to change position or posture : stir <ordered him not to move>
4: to take action : act
5a : to begin operating or functioning or working in a usual way b : to show marked activity <after a lull things really began to move> c : to move a piece (as in chess or checkers) during one's turn
6: to make a formal request, application, or appeal
7: to change hands by being sold or rented <goods that moved slowly>
8: of the bowels : evacuate
Emphasis added. Sounds like "people" are choosing #8.

RE: The Purple Sun of Xereus

The FaQ for the main rulebook makes this quite clear.

If a magical vortex ends its move over a unit it is placed 1"
beyond the unit. If this is also over a unit should it be placed 1"
beyond that unit, repeating the process until it is not touching any
models? When this happens, I assume models between where the
magical vortex ended its move and where the template is placed are
not affected by the spell? (p36)
A: Yes to both questions.

If it were the case that the only models affected are those under the template where it ends its move, then the spell would never affect anything.

Also, where they actually state it explicitly in page 3 of the FaQ.

Reference Section – The Lore of Death, The Purple Sun
of Xereus
Change “[...]Any model touched by the template must[...]” to
“[...]Any model under, or passed over by, the template
must[...]” in the fifth sentence.

Ah so it has been errata'd.

I half hope someone competent writes the next book, although i half hope they DO give it to a complete idiot - after all, if there weren't rules that need debating of blathering about, then these forums wouldn't exist.
