Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

I have a habit of starting Plogs for my armies and then never updating them. I'll remember, of course, three months later and make a huge photo-dump and then forget about the whole thing.
It's really despicable.

So let's see if I can actually upkeep one, shall we?
...
cheesygrin
I almost said that with a straight face.

My latest army is not a Warhammer army, as I have far too many of those, but a Warmachine one. My http://www.vampirecounts.net/Thread-The-...de-of-Cryx was unfortunately and rudely rejected by my gaming group for having a significant number of proxied models, so I decided to start afresh with a whole new force; Cygnar, the technologically advanced gun freaks of the Iron Kingdoms.

With that in mind, I picked up a force consisting of two "Cyclone" Warjacks (giant robots with huge freakin' machine guns), a unit of 10 Long Gunners with their command attachment (think Napoleonic war-era troops armed with automatic firearms) and Allister Caine (Han Solo. He shot first.) on eBay for a reasonable price. This is enough to make about 24 points of troops, enough for a decent sized game and an annoying-enough force to make my opponents want to physically hurt me with their dreadnought-sized hunks of pewter.

Obviously I didn't assemble these guys, but I plan to pick up my paints and basing materials over the weekend so I can get started with the painting.

That is unfortunate, though I feel like you'd get a similar reaction if you showed up someplace with a Warhammer army composed of proxied Warmachine models. Also, the Warmachine models are beautiful and distinctive, so I can't imagine not wanting to play with them.

The term for this is "sockjacking."

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

Actually most people are pretty understanding of proxying in warhammer armies, otherwise Mantic would go out of bussiness.
After all the warhammer players tolerating warmachine proxies, youd think the warmachine community would be pretty understanding of proxies the other way round.

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

I don't think you can make blanket statements about players like that, since individual play groups are going to be different regardless of what game they play. My Warmachine group doesn't care if you proxy as long as the proxy looks like whatever it's supposed to represent. On the other hand, I've seen people playing games of Warhammer with whatever random models (or broken pieces of models) they've got lying around, which is just confusing. At that point I'd prefer they just use labeled pieces of card or something. (And I'm not sure how many Warhammer players are tolerating Warmachine proxies given that GW doesn't permit players to use non-GW models in their stores.)

I only made the same kind of statement as you did about turning up to warhammer games.

Also, a zombie is a zombie is a zombie. Doesnt matter what game system the zombie is from, as long as it is recogniseable.

Also, on the final point, just because games workshop does not allow non GW minis in official tournaments, does not mean that applies to playing warhammer in general. From the large amount of non GW minis ive seen used in VC armies on this forum, im pretty sure most gaming clubs accept it.

But lets get back to trevies army!
So vekky, what kind of colour scheme?

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

Whoa, who knew my little thread could instigate such heated debate?
Awesome! Conflict breeds strength. Please carry on. cheesygrin

In all seriousness, though, I feel that I should explain the situation that forced my to abandon my previous Warmachine project:
I had been playing with the army casually for some time - it was all fully assembled and painted to a very high tabletop standard, scenic based with resin base inserts with the name what all models were meant to represent clearly printed on their base.
For some photos of the army, you can visit my previous Plog thread (the link for which is included in my intro post) or visit the photo gallery here.
My local game store was running a small tournament shortly after I started playing the game, and I spoke to some of the members of my gaming group as to whether the army would be a problem and was told that it would not be a problem due to the small size of the event and the fact that several of the gamers there knew the Press Ganger running it. Upon arriving to the tournament, however, I learned that another group of gamers who I assume visited another store or club had also arrived to take part. I was then told by the tournament organizer, in no uncertain terms, that my army would not be allowed to participate.
Funny side note, this was on my birthday! cheesygrin Happy Birthday, Trevy!

Overall my gaming group was very supportive of the army, but the powers-that-be were not. It seemed like the Press Ganger in question was under pressure by the influx of new players at his event to uphold Privateer Press' rules. The tournament was a good deal larger than previous events at this particular venue, and I think that caught people off balance.
So, I guess in this sense my above post was a little misleading - it wasn't my gaming group per se that rejected the army, just a single tournament organizer. I guess that's why I'm still playing the game at all - were I not allowed to play in casual games I probably never would have started in the first place.

Anyway, on to the actual Cygnar force...
Sanai - I think I'm going to go for a very standard 'army green' color for this force. I don't really like the other Privateer Press forces and their crisp, colorful and very fantasy-esque color schemes (my friend pointed out to me the other day that Privateer Press schemes use a lot of gold and bronze, something that hadn't really occurred to me until recently and is now sort of jarring), so I want to do something more gritty and realistic.
I also haven't really done many 'dirty' armies recently, so I'd like to make these guys quite a bit dirtied and banged up, like they've been out in the field for a while. Maybe I'll even dig out my old Chestnut Ink, 'cause that makes great blood stains! cheesygrin

Also they will be aussies. I don't know how this will be achieved, but it will probably have something to do with sitting down and yelling at them for a while in my best "Australian drill sergeant" voice. It's gonna be great. cheesygrin

I'm going home this weekend to pick up my paints and possibly paint a test model or two, so stay tuned!

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

Well, if you need any info on how to make them more aussie, I'm your man! I'm an aussie, and my dad used to be part of the Royal Australia Air Force.

By the way, I love the sight of mechs painted in army greens.

First step to make them look aussie, would be to put the traditional ANZAC symbol upon their heads- the slouch hat.
That might not be within the purview of how far you wanna go conversion whise however.
Other than that... maybe a beer can here or there? Various Aussie insignia? A more khaki camo than green camo?

edit: also, equip one of them with a spoon, brandishing it as a weapon, then you can play knifey spoony.

Ooh, I like the idea of the hat! I would love to try it (although my skills might put the venerated national symbol to shame sad ), but I seem to have misplaced my green stuff!

Okay, I've found my green stuff and am now embarking on the epic quest to sculpt a slouch hat!
I sculpted a perfect little one, but then it got stuck to the plastic I had it on and got all mushed up. sad
Now I'll have to try again.

I think I'll try to do one up for pCaine and possibly for the Long Gunner officer if I can get my act together and file off his ridiculous tri-corn hat.

Triple post! W00t!
I found my green stuff and put a slouch had on Caine. I'm a professedly terrible sculptor and the pic is too bright, but I think it gets the idea across.
How's it look, Sanai? cheesygrin

Yeah, I thought about that but I don't think I'm adept enough at sculpting to get something that fine on there. I might just paint something on to be honest - I'm much better at painting than converting. cheesygrin

I'll probably go back in the morning and clean the job up with a file once its cured to make it look a tad bit more presentable.

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

Well, I just got back from my gaming club and I seem to have misplaced my newly-hatted Caine!
I remember putting him in my figure case after taking him out while I was there, but he wasn't in it when I got back to my house.... sad
I certainly hope that it wasn't anything more sinister than me misplacing my model.

But, on a happy note, I got my first test figure done! How's it look?

I painted the whole model in army green but he ended up looked too much like a little green army man, so I added the khaki uniform to break it up a little bit.

I always find it a little humerous when people from other countries do the australian theme :P

any chance of getting a guy sitting in an outhouse in the army? I was going to suggest if there is mounted units to use kangaroos, but that might press the sculpting :P also, you need a "that's not a knife" pair

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

So this is about the point that most of my plogs fall apart - I can get through the intial conceptual phase just fine, but once I actually get started with the painting I tend to fall down.

I'm currently trying to set up a decent area to photograph in my dorm so I can show you guys the work that I've been doing lately. I finished up the Cyclone warjacks and figured out the basing scheme for the army. I also did a lot of work done on the rank n' file Long Gunners so they're about halfway done.

Stay tuned!

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

Alright, let's break the habit and actually post some pictures on my plog!
These are my two Warjacks; the dreaded Cygnaran Cyclones. I played a game with these mofos the other day (which I stupidly forgot to take pictures of) and they successfully pinned an enormous number of enemy light infantry with their Dual Suppressive Fire. Basically they put down a template and anything that moves under it gets automatically shot; represents the warjack pumping thousands of Cygnaran pesos (that has to be what they use as currency) worth of ammunition down range indiscriminately.
Sorry if the pictures are terrible; I'm still getting used to the lighting in my new room.

In hindsight I think the rust effects look better if applied to the edges of a model. This way they just look like camouflage. Oh well, I'll get better.
I'm also almost done with the majority of my Long Gunner unit (they just need to be overcoated and based), so watch this space. I hope to have them done by Monday, but I have no idea when I'll get pictures up!

Hope you enjoyed!

RE: Warmachine Plog Doomed to Fail

Hey, look! I'm updating!
Are you proud of me?

I've finished up all the Long Gunners; how do they look?

The leader in the front there is Colonel Sanders. He had the moustache, so I couldn't resist painting in in honor of the fast-food mascot...

I also finished painting pCaine. He's since been based with the same materials as the Long Gunners, but these are the only photos I had the foresight to take.

That's everything painted up for now, but I did just win some "Arcane Tempest Gun Mages" on eBay for a ridiculously low price, so hopefully I'll have those in my grubby little mitts within a week or so. Stay tuned!

Sorry if the pics are bad again - I still don't know how to light this tiny cell they call a room.
