We're Back

Played my first Game with the new book at my local store today.
Verdict: AMAZING!

VC are so much fun to play now, and the magic lore has been improved so much from before.

I Played 2k against Tomb Kings & took:

Vamp Lord - Quickblood, Armour of Dest. Ogre Blade V.Lore

Vamp Bsb - Lvl 2, Armour of fortune, Quickblood V.Lore

Vamp - Talisman of 4+ ward, lvl 2. V.Lore

26 skellies & command
20 ghouls & ghast
20 ghouls & ghast
20 zombies

23 G. Guard & command
3x Vargheists

Varghulf

He Took:

Liche Priest lvl 3 with ward
Tomb prince w/ swiftness potion and flameproof item

x4 chariots w/ banner
x20 Archers
x20 Archers
x30 ( ? ) Tomb guard with regrowing banner thing

Warshpinx

2x Screaming Skulls
Casket

That's what I remember anyway!

I played very aggressively knowing that his army would just stand & shoot for as long as possible. I charged the warsphinx with my G.Guard & BSB in the front, and with a ghoul unit in the flank the following turn. It munched through all the ghouls in one turn & took me four turns to finish it, and even then it was only through crumbling that I damaged it at all! My bsb couldn't touch it.

I left my third vamp in a building with the other ghouls to make sure I had a reserve wizard against crumbling as I almost lost my general in the first turn to a screaming skull! ( Thank Nagash for "Look out Sir!" )

My varghulf was obliterated by the light of death spell, ( we played dawn attack & he was stuck solo on th left flank, nowhere near my general. )

For Me though, distracting my opponent with vast numbers of grown zombies really paid off, as my vargheists went un-challenged into his Liche high Priest/ Archer unit's flank, and demolished all 20 in just two rounds of combat. ( I only bought them this morning!)

By the third turn, his army was crumbling badly, although the curse from his tomb prince managed to off my lord, causing me only a narrow victory on points.

It was an excellent game, and my Vamps dominated the magic phase with just a few low level casters, compared to the previous "hierophant" style vamps of the previous book.

Vampires are now back on the map with the confidence to go and blend your enemy knowing another character can support the army should you get off'd.

Definitely recommend the 'Gheists to anyone unsure of what to buy for their list, flying monstrous infantry are something our opponents weren't expecting to have to deal with in a VC army, and they certainly take their Toll!

RE: We're Back

Thanks for the batrep! Love to hear how the new armies are fairing.

This is an interesting match up for us.
Not surprising the Vargheists did will against TK, as they can't bait them. I imagine they will be a lot more of a liability against chaff and fast cav heavy armies, such as DE, OG, etc.

I don't see why the Varghulf did badly away from the general, he's a Vampire so he can march anyway... wink I often play Tomb Kings too and generally find them an easy opponent, try playing a more difficult army next time. wink

RE: We're Back

Hi,

I also played a 2400 points game of vampires versus Tomb kings.
I managed to win so that I killed about 1300 points of models and he got 900 of mine.

Tomb king had 2 warsphinxes and 1 of the other kind. Some archer units and 6 necropolis knights, 2 skull catapults & casked of souls. Level 4 caster was his only character.

I had 3 units of zombies, a large unit of skeletons, mortis engine, 6 vargheists, 5 hexwraiths, terrorgheist, 1 spirit host and some other small things.

The ethereal units really made some problems for him... the lone spirit host was his worry every turn because it would have totally taken out his sphinx if hed let me (not kill it but make it stay put for the rest of the game). Vargheist were amazing even though I did not dare to charge them too agressively but again he had to look out for them all the time.

Casting was great (raising) and mortis engine again was superb.

The new Vampires really seem extremely fun to play.

How did those hexwraiths work out for you?

RE: We're Back

TK charged his necropolis knights to my dire wolves that i had moved in front of them. He then overran a bit forward. His casket of souls had killed 3 of my 5 knights but 2 were left and they got a charge to the knights (6 knights at this point). They fought the knights for several rounds and eventually killed them (i had raised one back so they were 3 strong now). Then they helped my spirit host kill a unit of skeleton archers.

They diid well even though they could not run around much... still they did kill way more in points since necro knights are not cheap.

I have a feeling it's more likely that it was the Leadership 4 that got the Varghulf, rather than the lack of marching.

If I remember right, the Light of Death from the Casket of Souls deals Wounds equal to 3D6 - Ld.

I can't brain! I have the dumb Zombie1
