Winds of death and skirmishers

Hi!

I have a quick question regarding the winds of death spell vs skirmishers. Simply put: Does it work against them? It causes wounds for each rank, but are skirmishers considered to have ranks at all?

Indeed, it will work as normal. Skirmishers just don't get rank bonuses for purposes of combat resolution, but still contain ranks (albeit spaced out).

I can't brain! I have the dumb Zombie1

I disagree. Winds of death does not hurt skirmishers. Just like some of the fire spells don't hurt them.
BRB page 77 under Light Troops.

By that logic though you could argue that bolt throwers (strike one rank and file per rank) and cannons (strike a maximum of one model per rank) cannot damage skirmishers at all since both warmachines specifically site hits according to rank. I do, however, understand what you're saying. I'd just do 1d6 to the unit with Wind of Death, to argue otherwise would open up a HUGE can of worms.

Read the rest of the sentence.."therefore cannot claim a rank bonus, be steadfast, or disorder an enemy with a flank or rear attack - they make supporting attacks as normal, however." Supporting attacks can ONLY be made by models behind the 1st rank; AKA 2nd, 3rd, etc. So skirmishers can have ranks they just receive none of the bonuses for such due to their formation type.

This is also another reason why our "Vampire Sun" is the same casting values as it's death lore brother. Purple Sun hits a 10 model skirmisher unit it will hit and likely outright kill 3-4 models, Wind of Death hits the same unit and there will be 2d6(Avg 7) hits and seeing as most skirmishers are T3-4 & W1 then half the hits on avg will kill for... 3-4 models killed.

"Kid, don't threaten me. There are worse things than death, and uh, I can do all of them."

Thats a good point. Thanks. My group has been playing it that skirmishers always count as 0 ranks. I'll bring up the cannon and bolt throwing thing next time.

RE: Winds of death and skirmishers

It happens the same with warmachines. What if your "winds" stumbles upon a cannon or bolthrower? they have by definition "no ranks".

We play the rule D6 per rank, or 1D6 otherwise, but I can see the point of an argument....

DEATH IS JUST THE BEGINNING...

RE: Winds of death and skirmishers

I have a nearly final answer to this. BRB errata for page 77

Quote:Page 77 - Skirmishers, Light Troops
Change "(...)zero ranks(...)" to "(...)zero ranks in combat(...)".

So if they're not in close combat(the only combat they could be referring to) they do have ranks. No idea what happens if we trail over a unit in combat in later rounds though.
