So I have seen lots of people mention taking units of zombies or skelies wth max out wraiths in the front rank (no command). I was just wondering on other players thoughts on this. Is this too powerful or just a cheap gimmick? Do you think its easy to counter? Do ypu think it has any bad points?

Now they will know why they are afriad of the dark. Now they will know why they fear the night.

RE: wraith sheild

Its pricey points wise and likely to get hit by magic missiles or units with magic attacks, so its not really game breaking.

Why does it matter if it gets hit with a magic missile? You just pull your dead models off of the back ranks.

You are correct. 5 wraiths= More than a tough unit. Its actually a nice unit with ranks, banner, and killing power. It can and will kill most opposing units that our cheaper than it. The problem opposing units which are of equal cost will most likely have character models in then with a magic weapon. However if for some reason they don't its ugly.

As others said, it's not game breaking. It is expensive and used right can hold a single unit up assuming they don't have magic weapons. Not a very good trade off IMO but can be of use in some games. Also if it gets flank charged, it's done for.

It works especially well against high elves. The units are expensive, so there will be few so less chance of flanking and the characters rarely have magical attacks. Against daemons, orcs and goblins or certain skaven lists it will be fairly useless.

Can't the wraiths, as heroes, make way though? I agree it will have trouble against two units (one in the front and one in the flank) but if those don't have magic attacks, 5 wraiths may still kill enough to win the combat.

Meh probably not worth taking except in a fun game, however , since u place them last, you could foresee a use in one of ur units and drop em all there, or just keep them out of ur units for all the other uses they r good for, or plop one in each unit.

I understand demons. But why would it be useless against Skaven and Orc & Goblins?

High elves can easily give an entire unit magical attacks. If you're facing an open list you can plan for it but it may be risky for a closed list.

And I think orcs an goblins have little in way of magical attacks. Skaven have loads of shooting magic but few Units with attacks, but their heroes are cheap enough to spam and I think they can be given magical attacks for cheap

As someone said, the magical shooting only removes zombies.

I've tried this with two different units in a 2400 point game, taking 10 of them. I felt bad for my opponent because the many times I took them. It was quite amazing. Though 10 of them is crazy, 5 is enough for one unit. If you play against demons, just use them as random characters in units to add some attacks in. Against most armies, it's going to be great.

It's pricey, and has its weaknesses, but is generally a potent option. For 200 points more, you can run the 5 banshee version. Not as good for combat res, but nobody like five banshee screams at once.

RE: wraith sheild

Eh, it's only 300 points so it's actually fairly cheap. Most decent units go for about 4-500 points after all. Plus it's making our mandatory core useful, which is a nice bonus. The core protect the wraiths from magic missiles and break enemy steadfast, while the wraiths stop incoming attacks and rack up a decent amount of kills themselves - this is a deadly combination for most units. Just try and avoid anyone with the sword of anti-heroes!

I thought being Ethereal Wraiths could not join non-etherial units?

The Wraith Wall is so good it's already changing the meta game. 300 points to almost auto-win against several armies? Yes please! It's even a bit dirty.

Take two big Zombie units, deploy them on each flank but within march distance. Depending on how your opponent deploys magical attack units, put the Wraiths in the unit away from them. Profit.

For best effect, also take 2x1 Spirit Hosts to put pressure on those rare magical attacks. They can't be everywhere.

Only bad matchup is DoC, and even then Wraiths are very mobile and can be kept pretty safe.

So most of the power gamers are doing this?Happy Personally I thought it would be taking a lot of points away from our necromancer allotment. I'm too lazy to fiddle with pencils and calculators. Soon as Army Builder gets the data files for the new book, I'm going to test out soom builds. Smash
