  The Golden Bat Competition 2014
Posted by: Disciple of Nagash - 01-26-2014 09:52 PM - Replies (31)

Welcome once more to Carpe Noctem’s Golden Bat Competition.

Due to a variety of reasons our prestigious painting competition unfortunately didn't happen last year, so it gives me great pleasure to say it is back!

I am posting up the rules nice and early this year, to give you all plenty of notice to get those lovely models ready.

As many of you may know, we made significant changes to 2012's GB competition to try and improve it, however, this in turn led to its own issues. Following much discussion with the Mod team and the True Bloods, we have made some revisions to the contest.

This year, there are a total of four categories only:

  1. The Golden Bat Vampire Counts Painting Competition
  2. The Golden bat Vampire Counts Converting Competition
  3. The Golden Bat Open Painting Competition
  4. The Golden Bat Open Converting Competition

So, now the small print. I will warn you all now, the following is a hefty read, but only because we wanted to try and make things as crystal clear as possible. Please be advised that anyone who enters the GB automatically agrees to have read and understood these rules, and as such will be subject to them. Ignorance of these rules is not a valid argument!

As usual, if there are any questions please post them up. Each section is numbered, so please reference this with your question.

The Rules for 2014

Timescales
Period in which model may have been converted or painted: October 2012 to August 2014 (yes two years!)
Entry Opens: 01st July 2014
Entry Closes: 31st July 2014
Voting Opens: 01st August 2014
Voting Closes: 15th August 2014

1. How to Enter and Requirements

1A. Members who wish to enter the VC category must have at least 50 posts at time of submission of their entry. Any members who do not meet this requirement will be refused entry. Any members who spam or make posts that do not conform to the spirit of the forum, in order to reach the designated post limit, will be refused entry.

1B. Members must have at least 75 Zombie points at time of submission of their entry. Any members who do not meet this requirement will be refused entry. These points will not be taken, only checked up.

The above two requirements are to ensure entrants are contributing members of CN and have not just come along for the prizes!

1C. How to enter will be updated closer to the time depending on the available functionality of CN’s software. It will involve uploading a picture (not linking) to either a thread or a specified area

1D. Your post must also contain the following information:
- Name of your model. This can simply be “Vampire Lord” if you wish, but if we receive, multiple entries with such a name, then your entry could end up being called “Vampire Lord 1” or “Vampire Lord 5” etc. It is better to come up with a special name.
- Requested Tier (please Categories and Tiers section below).

1E. Pictures will be limited by CN’s attachment system which will resize pictures which are too large, however it should not impact the quality of your picture. Standard acceptable formats are .jpg or png.

Please refer to the Categories and Tiers for additional specific rules.

1F. Images must not be touched up or sharpened in any photo editing software. CN does have specialists on hand who will review entries to ensure fair play. The only acceptable editing is as follows:
-Light / Saturation adjustment
-Background alteration (you may select a more suitable background for showcasing your model).
-Resize photo, if the photo is too large.

That said, it is possible that any of the above could affect the photo and give the impression it has been enhanced (such as we found with GIMP). Therefore we highly recommend that you keep the original unedited photo, so if there are any queries we can compare. If there is any doubt over your image and you cannot satisfy our enquiries, your entry will be refused.

1G. All entries will be subject to review reviewed by selected CN Staff assigned to the Golden Bat, this will be confirmed closer to the live date but will likely included Disciple of Nagash and Dart Arts Moderators.

This is to ensure all entries meet the criteria and guidelines. Entries may be refused or queried, in which case they will advise via email or PM here on CN.

2. Categories and Tiers

2A. The categories are open to all current members of CN (excluding banned members), although there are additional requirements for the vampire categories as stated in 1A.

2B. Members may only enter once in each category.

2C. Members may enter in multiple categories, with the same model if they wish, as long as it applies to the category guidelines. For example they could convert a vampire model to enter in the Conversion / Sculpting category, and then paint it to enter in the Painting Category. Or they can enter different models in different categories.

2D. Categories and Tiers

Vampire Counts – Painting and Converting: Must be Vampire Counts related models. You may enter models that were not produced as that model, but were converted or painted accordingly (i.e using the Empire Wizard set and painting as a Necromancer).

The Open Category – Painting and Converting: May be any model from any gaming system except Vampire Counts which must be entered in the Vampire Counts category

2E. Painting Categories: Models in the painting category must be fully painted and based. A minimum of one picture may be entered up to a maximum of three. The number includes any small inserts into a larger picture. So a member may entry one large picture including two small inserts or three large pictures for example.

2F. Conversion Categories: Anyone wishing to enter in categories under this guideline must have at least one Work In Progress (WIP) as well as the standard pictures mentioned in 1D. This picture must clearly show the model part way through the conversion process.
At least half the model must be your own creativity. At least 50% of it must be converted / sculpted to qualify for this category, a simple head swap for example is not acceptable.
Models in this entry must not be painted or undercoated, i.e you should be able to see the various components and sculpting material where applicable.

2G. Tiers: Like 2012, this year we have a tier system to ensure that everyone stands a fair chance. There is no point denying that some people are masters of the art, and for those who have not yet achieved that level of skill, it can be disheartening to compete against them.

The tiers are as follows:

Apprentice: This covers most members from beginners to those who have turned out a full army. Basically your skills are around tabletop standard.

Master: You are using more advanced skills. You have progressed to such skills as NMM, seamless blending etc. You want to really pit your skills against your peers.

When entering your model, you should state which tier you would like to compete in. Now you have to be honest with yourself when submitting. We are trying to create the competition as fair as possible, so if you are someone who dabbles in NMM, OSL and smooth blending, then submitting in the General tier is not going to work.

Once all entries are received the team will review each model and confirm it is suitable for the category that is being entered. Now following this, what will happen next is the one area that we have concerns about, but we feel it is the best way to go about things.

a. You will get confirmation you entry and tier choice is fine.
b. You will be advised via PM the model is not suitable to the tier due to the skill level, it will be moved to the higher tier to be fair to others. If this is not agreed to, the model cannot be entered.
c. You will be advised via PM, that we recommend that the model is moved to the lower tier. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but we do want to give you a fair chance. If we think your model will not be fairly judged against the others in the same tier, it is only right we let you know, and we will do so as tactfully as possible. You then have the choice to accept our recommendation, or remain in the tier you applied for understanding your chances of winning will be impaired.

The only hard and fast rule, is that all previous GB winners must enter into the Master’s category. So whoever wins the general category this year, will be in the Master’s next year, and will hopefully encourage them to develop their skill further.

2H. Minimum Category Entries. To ensure fair and valid competition, there must be a minimum of four entries in each tier in a category. In the event that there are not enough entries the tiers for that category will be removed.
If once the tiers have been removed there are still not enough entries that specific category will be cancelled.
Please note however with how successful previous Golden Bats have been, it is very unlikely to happen.

3. Model Criteria

3A. Models for any categories may be from any manufacturer, they do not have to be just from Games Workshop. However they must be suitable for the category they are being entered in. If there is any doubt in this aspect, CN staff will make a decision.

3B. Entries for the Vampire Counts Category may be one of the following:
-1x Character, on foot or mounted (may be on monster mount)
-1x Monster / Mortis Engine / Coven Throne
-3x Infantry / Cavalry / Monstrous Infantry / Flyers – we recommend command models where possible but entrants may choose any three models they prefer

3C. Entries for the Open Competition may be one of the following:
1x Character, on foot or mounted (may by on any mount)
1x Bust
1x Monster / War Machine / Dreadnought / Tank or equivalent
3x Infantry / Cavalry / Bikes / Monstrous Infantry or equivalent

If your model does not fit into any of the above please ask. The idea of the open category is to be able to enter pretty much anything, so they may be from any gaming system and army.

3D. Any models entered must have been painted and/or converted between October 2012 – July 2014. Any models found to be outside this date range will be excluded, and the member will be disqualified.

3E. Models that have been entered in previous Golden Bat Competitions cannot be entered again, with the exception that conversion entries from previous competitions may be entered in the Painting categories.

4. Prizes and Awards

4A. Members may win multiple categories, and as such receive multiple prizes or awards as detailed below.

4B. Monetary prizes will be awarded only to the Vampire Counts Painting and Converting categories.

There are four sets of monetary prizes, two for the VC Painting (General and Master tier), two for the VC Converting (General and Master tier).

Currently the value of the prizes is being confirmed with our sponsors but in previous years the total prize fund has been around £200 and we hope to match or exceed that, so there should be some good prizes up for grabs!

4C. Ranked Medals. There are the following ranked medals available in all categories:

1st Place – Gold – 100 Zombie Points

2nd Place – Silver – 50 Zombie Points

3rd Place – Bronze – 30 Zombie Points

These take the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and the zombie points specified above.

4D. Golden Bat Master Medal.
This medal is granted to anyone who can win first place in more than one category, during the same competition. This takes the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and 100 zombie points.

4E. The Spanktastic Award.
Judged across all entrants regardless of category or tier. Decided by Disciple of Nagash.
The winners for this will be chosen by Disciple of Nagash, who will be looking for the most perverted entry! It is based on the model itself, not the painting. This takes the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and 50 zombie points.

4G. The Mods Choice
Judged across all entrants regardless of category or tier. Chosen by CN's Dark Art Mods.
Throughout the year the Dark Art mods get to know many members, and this is where they recognise someone they feel deserves the notice. Perhaps they have vastly improved, or gone that extra step. Whatever the reason, the mods will grant this award to one they feel deserve it, and state the reason why. This takes the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and 50 zombie points

4H. The WTF?! Award
Judged across all entrants regardless of category or tier. Voted for by forum members.
If you dont know what WTF stands for, we're not telling you! There are some members out there that like to not only think outside the box, they like to step outside the realm of sanity, and design or paint in a way that makes you go....well WTF?! This prize is for those people. It is not based on skill but on the idea behind the entry. This takes the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and 50 zombie points

4I. The Nightmare Award
Judged across all entrants regardless of category or tier. Voted for by forum members.
There are some models out there that just give us the heebie jeebies. They are the ones that make us look away from our monitors and keeps us awake a night, and this award is for them. This is based on a combination of both the model choice and the possibly the painting. That is not to say a conversion can't win this, as I have seen some unpainted models that gave me the creeps! This takes the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and 50 zombie points

4J. Living Doll Award
Judged across all entrants regardless of category or tier. Voted for by forum members.
I know many of you like to go for realism over fantasy, and this award is especially for you. This is for the model that looks like it is about to stand up and start walking and talking! This takes the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and 50 zombie points

4K. The Joker Award
Judged across all entrants regardless of category or tier. Voted for by forum members.
We like a good laugh, especially me. We all remember a funny model, the older ones of us will always remember the Zombie Bat-Pope. So for those that take the time to have some fun and make us laugh, this is a chance to be recognised. Again it is not based on painting skill. This takes the form of a medal applied to your profile on CN and 50 zombie points

5. Voting

5A. Members can vote once in each category.

5B. Entrants can vote, however they cannot vote for themselves. This will be checked on, and anyone voting for themselves will have the vote discounted.

5C: Votes are valid until the poll is actually closed. Every effort will be made to close the poll on time, however if for any reason it is closed late, votes after the period will still count.

5D: Votes by new members may be checked on to ensure there is no foul play. In the event CN staff has evidence to doubt votes being cast, CN reserves the right to discount said votes.

Complaints and Changes

All effort will be made to make this competition as fair and fun as possible.

However all entrants accept that be entering this competition that the rules and/or timeline may be changed without notice where deemed necessary.

The final decision for any changes, complaints or other issue is fully reserved to Disciple of Nagash.

So that's it! I look forward to a great competition this year and will post further updates as I have them.

Cheers

  Bishop Steps Down as Administrator
Posted by: Disciple of Nagash - 01-26-2014 09:28 PM - Replies (8)

Sadly, I can't always post good news sad

It is with regret that I announce the stepping down of Bishop as Administrator here on CN.

Bishop has been a long term member and has greatly contributed in many ways to the great forum we have to do. However as with many of us, myself very much included, real life can snatch us away.

Many of you have noted that Bishop has been absent for some time now, therefore I made the decision to retire his appointment.

Whilst it was not an easy decision, my own real life problems in the last year highlighted to me how important it is to have active staff members to continue to grow the site, hence my resurgence and active work on the new software.

Once the new software is installed I will be taking the time to fully review CN's staff, and will likely look at appointing a second administrator to support me in running CN.

I wish Bishop the best of luck, and hopefully he will be able to pop back and see us soon!

  CN Medals need you!
Posted by: Count Darvaleth - 11-08-2013 01:31 PM - Replies (80)

Fellow denizens of the dark,

Carpe Noctem has grown over the years. Some of you will remember when it looked completely different, back when the Countdown threads started at 1,000 and TVC I was in its infancy.

An area that has not kept pace as well as it perhaps could have is the medals & awards scheme. Our medals don't look hugely inspiring, and don't cover as broad an area as they could. The CN Staff have decided that this needs to change.

We're looking for artists who would consider dedicating their time to creating some fantastic-looking medals & awards for the forum. They will be themed both to the awards themselves and to CN as a whole.

Your input is very much appreciated, and is noted by the Staff!

Yours eternally, in life, death, and everything in between,

~ Count Darvaleth
Global Moderator

A Very Blood Christmas: Events on Carpe Noctem
Posted by: Disciple of Nagash - 11-07-2013 02:21 PM - No Replies

Greetings One and All!

With the Christmas season drawing closer we have decided to have some fun on CN. It has been a stressful year for some, and I know many have missed this years Golden Bat.

I can confirm that the GB will be back next year, but in the meantime we have another competition and other fun.

First, the Dark Arts team will be running a special Turning the Word to Darkness (our usual monthly converting / painting event), where members have to convert or paint any Vampire Counts model (for GW or other manufacturers) into Santa! This promises to be lots of fun, especially considering some of the more....ah....unusual mindsets that frequent CN. So pop along to the thread and register for the chance to win a unique medal for your profile:

Turning the World to Darkness: Christmas Special

In addition, another favourite will be starting just before Christmas - a themed VAU: Vampires Amongst Us. For those who don't know this is a role-playing game mixed with murder mystery as you try to figure out who the vampires are slowly the group is killed off - can you find them before they drain you all dry?

The signup thread has been created here: VAU: A Christmas Tale

So please pop along to read more about the rules and signup if interested.

Finally, if any members have any other ideas or suggestions of events we can run over Christmas, feel free to post them here. We still have time if a good suggestion pops up.

Cheers

  Downtime / New Host
Posted by: Disciple of Nagash - 11-07-2013 01:58 PM - Replies (9)

I would just like to take a moment to apologise for the downtime over the last couple of days.

As some of you are aware we have had issues, and I have logged a complaint with our host over what I feel was unacceptable delays in responding to our ticket.

Because of that we have transferred to a new host, and we are just finalising the transfer over the next week or so - however we do not anticipate any further downtime.

On the plus side the new package we have for our host, whilst a bit more expensive is much better, so I can continue the test on Xen Foro.

In the meantime please continue to post as normal and as usual I'll provide updates as and when I have them.

Cheers
