My semi-local gaming group is hosting monthly ITC tournaments. The upcoming one (next Saturday) is the first, so it's kind of a trial run, but I've already heard that ranked players are coming from hundreds of miles away. I don't think I'm on par with them yet, but that won't keep me from trying. The first tourney is at 1500 points on Vanguard size table. The new Stormcast are being allowed.

I've been running a mostly flesh eaters list already, but I'm considering going full FE. I just can't tell if it's worth it. My current list is:

Ghoul king on TG, cursed book
Crypt Haunter Courtier
Varghulf Courtier

30 ghouls
3 horrors
6 horrors

Abbatoir battalion

Total: 1460 points.

I'm considering dropping the varghulf and taking either two crypt ghast courtiers (same cost) or one ghast and one haunter. (cost 1500). I'm worried that the ghasts will be too easy to snipe, but also that the Varghulf will be a primary or secondary target and the extra horror will be ineffective. I'm also considering making someone other than the ghoul king my general. I won't be losing out on a command ability, but it might make Ruler of the Night last a little longer if they target the ghoul king first.

My overall concerns is that the Flesh Eaters don't have good saves. Against a mortal wound causing army, it's better than most, but against a regular army, it's average. The number of casters and potential spells/unbinds is also worrying. It's weird to have more characters than units. I'm going to have a considerably low model/unit count compared to my opponent and I don't think I can dole out enough wounds to make up for that.

I've read through all of the battalion warscrolls for FE and the only two that seem worthwhile are Abbatoir and the Crypt Flayer one that allows attacks in the hero phase, but that's 160 points. I just can't justify spending over 10% of my list allotment on that.

So my question is: Is it worthwhile to take Flesh Eaters? Even a straight TK list seems better and spending 140 points on chariot battalion seems fine, especially with Settra (granted, I don't have him... yet). I've playtested the Carsteins and they are great offensively, but are easily sniped.

I asked the TO and he said that you don't have to have a specific sub-faction allegiance (i.e. Sylvaneth, Fleash Eaters, etc.) in order to take a battalion warscroll from it. So I can take the Abbatoir battalion without taking Flesh Eaters. The good news is that this allows me to bring a wight king with Infernal standard. The bad news is that the horrors won't be battleline. So I just dropped the unit of 6 to a unit of three and dropped the Varghulf in favor of the wight king. This leaves me with 200 points and I need another battleline unit. I opted for a unit of chariots with a Crypt Ghast Courtier. This way I can still bring back ghouls and horrors give everything one extra save.

Hi there @Alabaster427 :)

I'm a returning player, got hooked in again because there's a tournament happening at my area. I have tried FE before, they're good, deal tons of dmg and fast, but they die just as fast. My advice would be to you cant prevent casualties so abuse the reinforcements. i second the wight king but i would keep the varghulf. unfortunately FE's performance tends to rise exponentially with numbers and i don't think a 1.5k list would have the numbers needed. for my tourny i opted for a death army using TK, spirits, morghasts, and deathrattles. However you might want to look at the objectives as well before planning the list. capturing the objective with numbers might tip the scales towards more ghouls and maybe ghasts to keep them alive.

I did a practice game and even without the Ghoul King (he died), the ghouls just destroyed whatever they touched at 30 models. I forgot the Abattoir rules, so I've made a cheat sheet so I remember it. The ghast will still give me the ghoul regeneration and the Wight King will keep them alive a little bit better. I've also decided to make the Wight King my general with Ruler of the Night. The Wight King will be able to use Lord of Bones on the chariots and since that happens in the hero phase, their charge also doubles that (happens in the combat phase). The scenarios are Border War, Blood and Glory, and 3 Places of Power. I was looking at the warscroll battalion rules and I noticed that I can deploy the entire battalion at once if I need to, which will help give me initiative on turn 1.

@Alabaster427

Great! i might give them another try and get more ghouls to have bigger units. gd luck for the tournament and be careful of shooty armies :)
They brutal with 20+ models. If a Crypt Ghast Courtier within 10" kills any models, then the ghouls get +1 attack. So with 30 models that could be 120 attacks, rerolling 1's to hit. You just need to make sure they attack 1st or second.

How do you manage to get all 30 to attack? At average i get to attack with 10-15 at best having 1" range

1. I still have them on square bases, so their bases are smaller than 1". That means that I get two ranks. Against round bases, I even get more like this: All 5 get to attack.

2. I usually have them engaged with more than one unit. I run them two deep around my TG. So in order to get in melee with my TG, you usually have to get through ghouls (not gonna happen), but the TG still gets to attack with at least its teeth.

3. I don't always get all thirty, but even if only one model gets to attack, but there are still 20+ models, it gets an extra attack. I used to run 20, but as soon as 1 dies, you lose the extra attacks. So 30 lets me lose some models without losing the +1 attack.
