I am, right now, going to try out the vampire counts army as a more restrained in the character selection and also in some way make individual units more self-sufficient.

Vampire; level 2: 200
- Dark Acolyte
- Avatar of Death(HA+Shield)
- Book of Arkhan
- Sword of Might

Vampire; level 2: 175
- Dark Acolyte
- Lord of the Dead
- Helm of Commandment

Vampire; level 1: BSB: 175
- Spectral Form

20 Skeletons; Spears; FC; War banner: 225
20 Skeletons; Spears; FC; Hellfire: 210

10 ghouls; Ghast: 88

5 Dire wolves: 40
5 Dire wolves: 40

2 Bat Swarms: 70

9 Black Knights; Banner; BoBarrows: 301
5 Black Knights; 120

5 Fell Bats: 100

6 Wraiths; including Banshee: 325

1 Varghulf: 175

TOTAL: 2244
PD: 7 + Book of Arkhan
DD: 5

Core blocks + the standard summoner vampire will form the anchor. Being able to lend WS6 to them spears isn't a bad thing at all.

Ethereal vamp is there to make the wraiths more independent and be able to move up faster than usual. BSB for CR and less crumbling.

Combat/support vamp join a skeleton unit.

Varghulf will work mostly with the black knights. The smaller black knight unit will mostly be used to threaten flanks and go after smaller units.

Wolves and bats do their usual thing. The swarms are there to give 'weak' flanking units a harder time reaching my own flanks. M10 flying move makes them ideal for this.

The theme of the list is an attempt to individualise VC units.

Magic defence sort of worries me though, with only 5DD available I've considered either dropping the smaller BK for a CC with balefire or simply have 2 x 5 BKs as flankers and add a CC with balefire(the ASF part working well with the spears).

Thoughts?

Cheers!

Five dispel dice might very well be quite a lot in the 8th edition of the game, where a basic army of 2250 size will only have a single wizard of level 2 (I'm thinking most armies will field a fighty and costy general, and often also another hero/BSB/Master Engineer or other specialist who doesn't have any magical powers, and then there's no more points for amything stronger than a single level 1 or level 2 wizard. )

Very true. The medium magic of today might just be the heavy magic phase of tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers

Do you think you will be ok with the normal vamp? At 2250 other armies will be able to bring a fully tooled up combat lord due to their lower costs, and I would imagine that it would munch through a vamp with no issue. Even a measly human general kitted up right would be worrying.

Perhaps swap one of the vamps for a Wight King or Necro, see if you can squeeze a basic lord in there? You could then also get an extra PD if you can wriggle the extra level in there?

If characters will indeed be limited to 25% of the army, then magic items will also be quite rare which will be great news for any Etherals, so you might consider adding a few bases of Spirit Hosts as well.

Although if the rumours turn out NOT to be true, Spirit Hosts will not contribute much... Unless of course you're facing Dogs of War or Chaos Dwarfs, their orry lack of magic weapons makes Spirit Hosts rule against such armies. (but then no-one needs help against those armies, I think. They're so hopelessly outdated anyway...)

I've had my own attempts at creating a list that could transition from 7th to 8th, but I don't really think that it can be done with any certainty until we know the extents of how they'll be changing the magic system. The relation between Dispel and Power Dice might be flying out the window for all we know. :)

I like the looks of your list, although having a cool 500 points spent on that unit of Wraiths could go either way, in my experience. Oh and also, I think that Bat Swarms have a minimum unit size of 3 bases~

DoN: Yeah, I know. I just want to see if I can make it work with the lesser breed. I might even be worth putting the two vampires with Dark Acolyte together, get a 2+ save, SoMight and have the helm at the ready. Red fury, LotD and inf. hatred landing the lord at 415, though the ethereal BSB which I feel I want to keep due to the large amount of points have in the wraith unit. I would have drop the BSB off him too. Right now fitting in a lord is real fiddly.

It all comes down to how magic works though.

ulrik: That is what I was thinking too. Also why I have my vampire is there to make sure I won't have to babysit the unit with a vargh or something(even though they do work quite nicely together). A fast moving ethereal unit will be quite the threat.

MasterSpark: Aye, lots of points spent on this unit. The reason for its size is the banshee being a champ, dropping one means the vampire is in harms way. I am quite fond of the singing ghost. She's been good to me and bad to my opponent. :konrad:

As you all pointed out we can't be 100% sure what will happend in june, just trying things out for size.

so im reading up on the etheral vampire power and it says you cant take magic items. Does this mean you can take a BSB on an Eth Vampire but you cant take a Magic Banner BSB? Its not very specific, it doesnt say arcane items or weapons or armor. Magic banners are in the magic items section so im thinking it would be off limits.

A magic banner is still a magic item, as are arcane, talismans, enchanted items, so it is a no-go. A BSB is just an upgrade, so this is allowed.
