I've long hoped that GW would one day sell that amazing OBR fortress walls and gate scenery kit they use in their army pictures, but alas they seem to have no interest in doing so. Failing that, I've been hoping for a decent quality 3rd party substitute, and this kickstarter looks to be exactly that.

This kickstarter finally motivated me to pick up an entry level 3d printer.

I went with the Bambu Lab A1 FDM bed-slinger. Resin is preferred for minis, but resin is also a lot of hassle, and I really don't have a safe place to put one. FDM's a lot less hassle, a lot safer (still needs some ventilation and/or a hepa filter), and while it's not really minis quality it should be plenty good for terrain, which is the main thing I got it for.

Test file, from the kickstarter:

First print (0.4mm nozzle, 0.1mm layer height)

I'm honestly pretty happy with this result already, but I do have a 0.2mm nozzle on order that should let me go down to 0.06mm layer height.

Printing in progress on the first batch of 2 walls + wall tops. Using the 0.4mm nozzle's 0.08mm high quality preset the print will take the better part of three days.

I should have printed a single wall & top to test, though. Not only would that have been done in half the time, I can also already tell from the partially complete print that these walls are bigger than I had envisioned. I want my models to be able to peek over the ramparts, but it looks like at this size the ramparts will end up well above their heads.

We'll see when this print run is done monday evening, but at this point I expect I'll end up tossing these walls and starting over at maybe 80% scale.

First walls pront on the fortess is done, this time on the max quality preset for the 0.4mm nozzle, which took 3 days. I don't mind the wait for the quality of the print, which is way higher than I expected from fdm, that said....

I really should have done a test print of a single wall section. For one thing, fitting multiple objects onto the print bed doesn't actually save any time, which, duh, obviously. More importantly though, I think the default print size on this file is bigger than I want. The size looks fine with larger models, like the vampires on the left, but mortek guard are short kings and the only bit of them that shows above the battlements are their banner and the tops of their spears. that and the total footprint of the fortress at this size would be positively massive.

So I'm thinking I'll try again with a single wall at like 85% scale. maybe test with just the wall topper to save filament. I'll feel bad tossing these prints out (I mean, they're close to $10 of filament if nothing else), but better to catch it now a little bit late than to be unhappy with the end result way, way too late.

Alright, new test print on the left, this time at 80% scale, and it looks much better with the Mortek Guard's heads & shoulders showing above the sides, and it should be closer, I think, to the scale of the gw studio obr walls.

This size is a ~bit~ small for some of the larger models with scenic bases. obr necropolis stalkers & immortis guard look downright silly, & morghasts don't fit on the new test wall at all. But I don't think there's ans scale I could print these at that would look good for stalkers & morghasts and still be remotely appropriate for mortek guard, and if I have to scale the walls for one or the other I have to pick the 'regular soldiers' of the faction.

Once again I find myself wishing morteks were scaled to be on par with stormcasts, even if that would have meant units of 5 to 10 instead of 10 to 20, and probably would have had them sold in boxes of 10 for the same price as the current boxes of 20.

But that would have better fit the faction's elite theme. Heck, their characters & cavalry are already at that larger scale. Kavalos are supposed to basically be mounted mortek guard, but the riders would tower over morteks if they were on foot, and that's not even getting into the hero models.

That terrain design looks great, gives me some "H.R. Giger meets old Japanese RPG's" vibes.

I love where the FDM printers are headed. My plan in the recent year or so was to wait for them to improve more and then try and jump in as well.
The resin ones are just too much hassle for my liking, and this seems like it will be an ideal choice for terrain and extra bits at least.

I will wait some more, but glad to see that even the entry level FDM's are already giving such results. Please do share the results once you try printing with the 0.2 mm nozzle. 🙂

Some additional stl viles that might be relevant for ossiarch terrain - a 'necromancer's tower' made of bones and a couple dungeon wall tiles designed for Aliens style organic hive walls which are suitably creepy and might work painted as shaped bone.

As for my own printing projects, I've moved that to another thread, since it's straying a bit from the intended topic of this one.

3DHexes next kickstarter is up, with the 'Fortress of Steel and Bone' available as an add-on.

...

This set is less a 'tabletop miniatures war game terrain' set and more of a 'tabletop rpg dungeon tiles' set, albeit one with a catacombs / skyrim-esque duergar tombs sort of theme to them, which might still find some practical use for undead fans.

If you don't want the new Northern Catacombs set, but do want the files for the Fortress of Steel and Bone, then you can enter a pledge for the Catacombs kickstarter at the 1 euro 'add ons only' tier, and you'll then get a screen where you can select additional purchases, with Fortress of Steel and Bone for +25 euro as one of the options. The total price then if you're getting just the bone fort is 26 euro for the stl files, which from working with them myself I think is a great deal, provided you already have a 3d printer, and is cheaper than the $39 euros that they typically price their old sets at once they put them up for late pledges.

If you do puchase the bone fort files this way, I don't know if they'll send you the stls right away, or if you'll have to wait for the end of the catacombs kickstarter
