Welcome to the next instance of Turning the World to Darkness competition!

In the Turning the World to Darkness we pick a different theme each time, and the goal is to represent the theme or find ways to turn it to the ways of undead!

The theme of this competition, as chosen by MedMos, the winner of the last competition, is "More Beast than Man"!

The idea behind the theme is that something either devolved or embraced its inner urges to become something more feral than previously. So embrace your inner beast and let your imagination go wild! You are also encouraged to use models or parts from whatever army you feel like, not restricted to undead only. It could be a single model or a whole unit of them, of all scales and sizes.

Original models (sculpts) and conversions are allowed.

The Prize: The winner earns the glory and a place in the Hall of Infamy thread and a forum medal once they are available. The winner also gets to select the theme of the next painting challenge (note that the winner only has a weekend to present the decision, so please be prepared and available).

The Rules:
  • All models entered should not have been painted more than a year ago from the date the entry thread is closed. This will not be enforced but violators will politely be asked to retract their entry.
  • All miniatures presented must have been painted by the entrant.
  • Max one entry per person.
  • Max 3 images per entry (including pictures in collages), of reasonable size.
  • No voting for your own entry.
  • No model can be entered into several challenges.
  • For every started set of 5 entries, each member gets a single vote (for example: with 7 entries everyone would get 2 votes).
  • Open entries and open voting. Everyone can see who painted what.
  • Models can be of any manufacturer and conversion but must fulfill all the criteria of the given theme.
  • If no decision on the next theme is made within a week of the winner announcement, the decision falls to the competition organizer.

The Schedule:

Week 1, Monday: Theme announcement and entry thread created
Week 6, Sunday: Entry thread closed. Voting thread opened.
Week 8, Friday: Voting thread closed. Result announced. Winner asked about next theme.

This thread is now open for people to post their entries. Please state a name of the entry along with the pictures. The thread closes on the 28th of November 2021 at (roughly) 23:59 CET (but we are not in a hurry, we can easily extend it if someone needs to finish their entry). You can also comment and discuss in this thread, it is not restricted exclusively for entries.

Easy ones are Strigoi/Ghoul King or Varghulfs. A clever Lord of the Night might have picked a theme they had a model for, but I'm not that... 😁 I just wanted to see what people could do with beastly.

Once again the Cursed City box I painted this summer will provide a ready entry here. Just have to choose between my Vargskyr and my Bloodborn.

As promised...

"More Machine than Man, more Beast than Machine!"

Flayed Ones are twisted and ghoulish Necron terrors afflicted by an ancient infection that breeds a hunger for organic flesh in them.
These loathsome creatures managed to retain some of their original consciousness when they were transferred into their living metallic bodies, but were cursed with a terrible disease, manifesting a hunger for flesh that cannot be satisfied and that eventually drove them to madness.

Thin and wiry, they habitually adorn themselves with the still-wet pieces of skin and hide they have stripped from their victims.

The nature of this curse is little understood, even by the wisest of Crypteks, but its results are unmistakable.

This madness first manifests as a drive to kill that can cause a Necron to ignore commands to cease fire or hold a position. While this urge to kill is held in common with the Necron Destroyers, the ultimate goal is quite different. Destroyers exist for the act of killing itself, with extermination of life being both the means and the end. Flayed Ones kill in order to sate an unnatural hunger for flesh and blood; they kill so that they might feast.

Of course, as machines, Necrons are incapable of consuming food or drink of any kind, and so this hunger can never be satisfied. Yet the Flayed Ones have devolved far beyond reason or logic, and as they cut down their prey they stop to smear meat across their unmoving jaws, as blood drips down their steel necks and dribbles through stained ribs to pool at their feet. This disease of the mind is accompanied by equally grotesque physical changes, as the living metal necrodermis of the afflicted Necron reconfigures to better serve its new purpose.

Scary looking guys, Unas the slayer! Feral machines, very creepy.

Thanks!
Interestingly, Flayed Ones are not part of the army. They stay on their own and when they "sense" a battle they just teleport into it to join the fray.

And Necrons are more than happy to keep them away from their tomb worlds, as their madness it's one of the very few things actually feared by Overlords and Crypteks.
