Homemade lifeswarm

I'm a big fan of the Emerald Lifeswarm endless spell, and have used it extensively in games, but always borrow a model for it as the two people I play regularly both bought the endless spells set that it came in. Now I want to make my own to match in to my army.
I always jokingly refer to it as an Emerald Deathswarm in games, but that made me think I should try to model it as such. Possibly even an Amethyst Deathswarm!
Has anyone tried scratch building something along these lines? Any ideas/pictures to get my imagination going? So far my best idea is just a swarm of skulls, which are easy to acquire, by I'm not sure what to use to stick them together into a "cloud"?

Great idea. I would suggest that you make the cloud with a hot glue gun and build it up in layers while sticking skulls (from the great skulls set from citadel) into it as you go a long.

Alternatively, given that we have no more bat swarms as available unit, you could pick 2-3 of them and use them together as "emerald batswarm"
of course you should pick models with lots of tiny bats...
something like the reaper's ones.

That would look pretty cool actually. I would have to be careful, as I actually use old bat swarms in place of Fellbats (we have no bat swarms option as you say, so it doesn't seem to cause people any problems, and I can't afford the new Fellbats yet...) but if I gave them an obviously magical paintjob, and put them on a funny oval base, that should be clear enough. A nice purple batswarm...

That's exactly my case as well.
