I have begun a series of how to paint guides much like the showcase of showing off your masterpieces this is to show off how you paint your undead. Do not be bashful feel free to share so we can catalog a good variety and mix of wonderful undead tutorials. Please leave the holy water and stakes at home. So I have Hijacked chaos Born's little thread.

Hi, I'm thinking of getting back into painting my army so that I can take them to tournaments, and to qualify for entry they must be based.

Now I've never based a model before, and I was just wondering what kind of stuff people use; what sand type stuff people put on, what colours you use to paint them, what do you do for centerpiece model bases etc

Thanks in advance and please don't forget to post up pictures of your work:thumbsup:

RE: What do you do for bases?

I use elmers glue and a cheap brush to put it on with. I do it before prime the model so that it prime the sand to (as find sand as you can if.) then you drybrush scorched brown, a lighter brow (i like vermin brown) and finish with bleach bone. Put some elmers glue on some spots on the base and add static grass, and you're done.

I like to paint the time on my bases brown

RE: What do you do for bases?

Okay, I’ll teach you how I base my vampire counts. First lay down straight PVC glue. DO NOT GET IT ON THE MODEL. I can’t not stress that enouhht.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_003029.5f2df639d28cf0ec07b061d28f1f8b2a.jpg

Next is the sand.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_003144.f9a2aa796f163e1ad05c64196f8081ac.jpg

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_003155.97681fd96724099c7daf6bed07aca843.jpg

A few carefully controlled spots of PVC glue once the sand dries.
avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_003356.697d7f5d93fa55b9ffa374286e5dfc75.jpg

And then the scorched grass. Please don’t dump it over the model. Dip the base into the static grass. Or Use a punch of grass and press it into the glue.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_003555.fa7b965bbe079b26c9d859890e709954.jpg

From there you can add dried birch pods
avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_003732.2f73ac186235a84ffc6b9be63033242a.jpg

Or field grass
avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_003904.e1da82b75be32ddd8067855e61665fbf.jpg

Fancy foilages or fancy rocks. Or whatever else strikes your fancy.
avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_03_20120328_004117.b17d6ce81f18b771df5673ad475394bd.jpg

Now here is a question do you think we should do a full thread for how to do basing like my how to paint undead threads?

If so I can hijack this one for that reason.

The base on the terrorgheist looks too flat. :-/ I tried to prevent that by using three similar shades of grass. Maybe some cork boulders? Opinions anyone?
I know I’ll dry fit some boulders, and you can tell me which you feels looks better!

so I promised johnny this

I’ll be showing you how to do a desert themed basing this time. Start by painting the base Deneb stone.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_06_20120606_143934.72e6b32127c903a6f516f0218838d273.jpg

Using an old brush, or a cheap one, lay down an undiluted layer of Elmer’s glue or PVC glue.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_06_20120606_144207.ef463baf4c43de003fb6706e60fae462.jpg

Dip the base into the sand. Don’t just pour the basing material over the mini.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_06_20120606_144341.933318db7212ced32a1663d60d529345.jpg

Pull it out after a moment, shake and lightly tap the base to free any excess sand. Let it dry several hours, or overnight before moving on.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_06_20120606_144509.8f43d36e43aa1a31689924b0675291b4.jpg

Alright. Now the bases are dry.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_06_20120606_145429.0dc507d54f062421fe448554cb1c49e0.jpg

The next step is to use the glue and the brush to add daubs of glue placed randomly. Don’t do too much, you’ll be doing this again after this layer of grass. I start with scorched grass.

avannahscreations.files.wordpress.com_2012_06_20120606_145635.60ba0942df08b8340cca710a60f3f7f6.jpg

Let it dry again, then repeat, but using yellow grass now.

RE: basing sand

Go to a hardware store and look at where they store their sand. They tend to have a lot of grades in containers you can buy. Most of the time, if you ask nicely you can fill up a small container, such as one of the plastic margarine containers, with the mix of it for free from the sand that spilled out. There's everything from playground sand, sandblaster sand, and "basing" sand (Meant for making brickwork flat and stable)

I get a ton of similar stuff including a small bucket of slate chips when a big bag of them broke open on them.

If nothing else, you can often get a decent sized amount as a "sample" to compare to what you already have from the sweepings of the area that will last quite some time.

And that's if you don't simply live near a beach or similar feature that has natural sand. Most often the natural sand tends to be a good mix as well.

RE: basing sand

well i prefer the free solution, hehe. I go to a beach and leave with a can full of sand  If you don't live near a beach then you can go to a pet store and buy some.
There are many companies that sell modelling sand, most of them are a lot cheaper than citadel's. Some good alternatives are:

Not a problem son.
Made this snowman out of flock kinda with the method below
ai649.photobucket.com_albums_uu220_vannahscreations_Reaper_20minis_20and_20others_120711snowman.jpg

Snowbasing
mix snow flock and strait elmer's glue(white school glue) or strait Pva into a paste

then sprinkle snow over top

ai649.photobucket.com_albums_uu220_vannahscreations_Reaper_20minis_20and_20others_100511penguin.jpg

I am going to stress this I only use gw snow flock for this as I tried woodland scenic and they just don't react the same.

I will do a real tutorial in a few days or so. but this will get ya started.

you can also fallow my steps above and just add some snow paste this way too as melting snow for a spring or thawing look.

ai649.photobucket.com_albums_uu220_vannahscreations_Reaper_20m94b1c1c27d5221a2f90dbc2abf9e9cdc.jpg

Some I do it over the base too so to give it a nice Christmas feel.
