Hello brothers and sisters! I wished to make a guide about Lore of Undeath and all/best summoning chioces you have, while using regular casters, or Arkhan/Nagash. It's going to be a bit of a long reading, but as a guide, I hope the colors can point out which part interest you more. Also, I'll leave a reply for every summoning spell, so that information is not crumped up. As this is my first guide, I can and will make some mistakes and I'll appreciate the advice and will correct as I need as soon as possible. Also, if this guide proves useful, I'll request to make it a sticky! :D

(EDIT: Thanks to @DarkProphet for corrections made :D)

So, here we go...

Gray Text: Is the one thing I don't recomend you summon, either for the overkill of models, like Zombies, Dire Wolves, etc. or the much better options it opens, specially with Arkhan or Nagash.

White text: those units you can consider using, but there are probably better ones, because...

Yellow text: these are the ones I highly recommend summoning, depending on your list and playstyle of course. These are the ones that can change the game entirely and grant you victory!

Kandorak - The Harbinger

This spell should only be used by Lvl 3+ Wizards, as it has the highest casting value of all spells from Undeath, specially the buffed version.

Basic Version, a single Character.

Generic Wizards:
(Cast 10+, you should 2-dice it for better efficiency)
A generic wizard can summon 65pts:

- A Necrotect with 5pts magical item.
* Spending a Counter, summon a Tomb Priest
- An unupgraded Necromancer
- A Cairn Wraith.

Arkhan, Mortarch of Sacrament
(cast 10+, needs 2-dice)

- A Tomb Priest, with 60pts left for upgrades.

- Prince Apophas

- A Tomb Banshee
- A Wight King with 45pts left for upgrades.

- A Vampire with 25pts left for upgrades.

Nagash, Supreme Lord of the Undead
(cast 10+, needs 2-dice)

- A Tomb Prince with 95pts left for upgrades.

- A Tomb High Priest with 20pts left for upgrades.
- A Tomb King with 25pts left for upgrades.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffed Version, a single Monster, Chariot or War Machine.

(Cast 24+, 6-dice this spell, it's a must. Hope you don't get swallowed by a Dimentional Cascade =S)
A generic wizard can summon 200pts:

- A Necrolit Colossus with any upgrade you want to give it.

Arkhan, Mortarch of Sacrament
(Cast 24+, 6-dice this spell, it's a must. Hope you don't get swallowed by a Dimentional Cascade =S. If you need to, have him use his extra 2 dice stored from his staff, only if you're desperate)
Arkhan can summon 400pts:
- A Warsphinx of Khemri with any upgrades.
- A Necrolit Colossus with any upgrade you want to give it.
- A Hierotitan ( if you didn't have one already, shame on you! D: )

Nagash, Supreme Lord of the Undead
(Cast 24+, 6-dice this spell, it's a must. Hope you don't get swallowed by a Dimentional Cascade =S. Also, you may want to use his 4 extra dice to have this spell almost guaranteed IF)
Nagash can summon 600pts:
- A Warsphinx of Khemri with any upgrades.
- A Necrolit Colossus with any upgrade you want to give it.
- A Hierotitan ( if you didn't have one already, shame on you! D: )
- A Necrosphinx with any upgrades.
- A Screaming Skull Catapult with any upgrades.
- A Casket of Souls
- A Black Coach (yay!)
- A Varghulf
- A Mortis Engine with any upgrades. Now you can have 4+ Regen Saves for all!!
- A Terrorgheist with any upgrades for the best fun ever!

***Since it is not clear if one can also summon Monster Characters, like Mortarchs, or upgrade Characters with Monster or Chariot mounts, those are not included here, but they should, considering how many points Nagash can summon, but those spent are at most roughly 30% of his allowance.

Akar'aran - The Dark Riders
Since this is a spell that can change the game by summoning heavy cavalry in the Special / Rare slots of the Undead Legions, you save up your Raise the Dead counters for either this, or Kandorak's Monsters. Feel free to save as many counters here as you wish, in order to summon a very powerful Unit and wipe those who would oppose you!

Cavalry, Monstruous Cavalry and Chariot Units.

Generic Wizards:
(Cast 16+, lvl 1-2 Wizards should only cast this with 4-5 dice and a Hierotitan support. Lvl 3-4 Wizards can use 4 dice but would be better off with Hierotitan support.)
A generic wizard can summon with 150pts:
- A Unit of 5-12 Skeletal Riders.
- A Unit of 5-10 Skeletal Archer Riders(?) with 10pts left for upgrades.
* Spending 2 Counters, summon an unupgraded Unit of 3 War Chariots.
* Spending 5 Counters, summon an unupgraded Unit of 3 Necropolis Knights.
- A Corpse Cart with any upgrades available (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course!).
- A Unit of 5-7 Black Knights, with upgrades. 5 Black Knights with barding/lances and 20pts left for upgrades.
- A Unit of 5 Hexwraiths, but no points left for the Hellwraith.
* Spending 5 Counters, summon a unit of 4 Blood Knights, unupgraded but ready to kick some ass!
* Spending 5 Counters, summon a Black Coach... because Kandorak is not enough!! (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course! Need to confirm this!).

* Spending 7 Counters, summon a Mortis Engine (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course! Need to confirm this!).

Arkhan, Mortarch of Sacrament
(cast 16+, needs 4 dice, but safer with Hierotitan support)
Arkhan can summon with 300pts:
- A Unit of 5-25 Skeletal Riders, with most of their upgrades.
- A Unit of 5-21 Skeletal Archer Riders(?), with most/all of their Upgrades.
- A Unit of 3-5 War Chariots, with some/most of their upgrades.

- A Unit of 3-4 Necropolis Knights with some/most of their upgrades.
- A Corpse Cart with any upgrades available (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course!).
- A Unit of 5-14 Black Knights, with upgrades. That is 10 Black Knights with barding, lances and full command, but only 10pts left for a magical banner. Spend 1 Raise the Dead counter to have the unit carry the Banner of the Barrows and the Standard Bearer, and 2 Counters to have all upgrades.
- A Unit of 10 Hexwraiths!, or 9 + a Hellwraith (Arkhan hits the sweet spot of the max Unit size of Hexwraiths).
- A Unit of 4 Blood Knights, with Musician, Standard bearer and Flag of Blood Keep. Or 6 Knights unupgraded, or 5 with full command and a 15pts magical weapon for the Kastellan, etc.
- A Black Coach (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course! Need to confirm this!)
- A Mortis Engine, with all upgrades (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course! Need to confirm this!).

Nagash, Supreme Lord of the Undead
(cast 16+, you can 3-dice this spell only with a Hierotitan support. A bit risky but very cost-efficient)
Nagash can summon with 450pts:
- A Unit of 5-37 Skeletal Riders, with any of their upgrades.
- A Unit of 5-32 Skeletal Archer Riders(?), with any of their Upgrades.

- A Unit of 3-8 War Chariots, with some/most of their upgrades.
- A Unit of 3-6 Necropolis Knights with some/most of their upgrades.

- A Corpse Cart with any upgrades available (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course!).
- A Unit of 5-21 Black Knights, with upgrades. That is 14 Black Knights with all upgrades and Banner of the Barrows, or 15 Knights with barding/lances, Standard Bearer and Banner of the Barrows, etc.
- A Unit of 10 Hexwraiths with a Hellwraith (max Unit size is 10, so this Unit is kinda wasted on Nagash, but by no means useless)
- A Unit of 7 Blood Knights, with Musician, Standard bearer and Flag of Blood Keep. Or 9 Knights unupgraded, etc.
- A Black Coach (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course! Need to confirm this!)
- A Mortis Engine, with all upgrades (since it says Chariots, that includes 1 chariot, of course! Need to confirm this!).

Thanks for starting this, I have been working on a similar project as well. One thing i noticed is tomb scorpions are counted as a unit of 1, so multiples cannot be summoned reguardless of the points limit. Unless somone can prove me otherwise.(hopefully they can )

Max size for a unit of Hexwraiths is 10

Holy crap, the trouble this saves me! Thanks so much, this is much easier than flipping through my book every spell I cast. I vote for a sticky :)

One of my favorite vampires to summon with nagash is vampire with red fury and either ogre blade or swor of strife.

He's naked and Killy.

Also if you spend 3 tokens with nagash you can get a ghoul king with 25 points if items.

This has made me want to get nagash even more.. All those summoning options.... Need to save up some money and buy him I think.

Quick question : while summoning, do i have to follow the minimum number of models in a unit ? it's not clear in the rules :(

Yes, you must follow all the rules for minimum (like 20+ zombies) and maximum (like Hexwraiths), that's why some Units are not available unless you spend some Raise the Dead counters first (like a unit of Cairn Wraiths)

Very nice summary Demian I love it and will certainly bring this to future games!

I have been considering bringing Nagash. As for the games I've seen he has been able to summon for at least somewhere in between 500-800 points worth of models per game.
Given that he is also a very good at killing stuff himself (beating a unit of skullcrushers, I think they're called? The WoC cavalry juggernauts that everyone seems to avoid apart from our Tgheists) all on his own.

Looking at all those nasty things he can bring to the table.. Well, it just makes me want to run off to the store and buy him.

I have a PDF created which is basically a copy/paste from his notes. If someone gives me a place to upload it, I will share it.

EDIT: It is 10 pages long, and I spaced out the spells and some of the sections to give it some better readability at the table.

Quick question : while summoning, do i have to follow the minimum number of models in a unit ? it's not clear in the rules :(

Nagash Book 2 on the page opposite the spell list in the box titled summoning spells it explicitly states that you must adhere to minimum unit sizes etc

Considerations when playing:

Arkhan, Mortarch of Sacrament:

  • He is a Lvl 4 Wizard, that only knows spells from the lore of Death and Undeath, he has no access to healing, other than Breath of Darkness, his own Tomb Blade and Feaster of Souls in combat. You can go full Death magic with Ryze (signature spell) and use all debuffs you can get and maybe Soul Leech (but since he has Ld 9 and can't have Standard of Discipline, he may not be as effective as a Vampire for that...) hopefully, you get any other spells, excluding Dreadknight and you're set.
  • He is best played with full Lore of Undeath, since his Soul Leech is not that powerful, and his summoning is much better than a regular wizard.
  • Be careful with Khenash-an, the Staff of Spirits, since it will Not allow you to store dice from or for your Dispel Pool, only your Power pool (during your own turn), and can Only use such stored dice in your next Magic Phase (not on your opponent's for dispel purposes, as the Black Periapt does). Therefore, plan your Next magic phase to cast your most threatening spell with 8 dice if you wish, or cast his 4 spells with low dice, as provided in this guide, to maximize efficiency: (ie: once Arkhan is near your target as he can fly, you use Kandorak to summon a Terrorgheist that can scream that very same turn, since it is close to his intended target. Worry about the miscast later!).
  • In order to maximize his special rules, cast your not-so-threatening Undeath spells to harvest some Raise the Dead counters, maybe Breath of Darkness to get some Morghasts into position, etc, but plan ahead to leave 2 dice untouched to store in his staff. If you get dispelled a lot, then consider using those 2 dice right there to get a spell off without resistance, or... store them and may your next magic phase is better used. If you get a poor phase, or you simply see your opponent is saving his dice and will not let your last spell go off, then close that phase and store your dice, leaving his dispel pool to waste. Repeat until you have the amount you want and the time is right to use your spell.
  • Don't underestimate Sulekhim - The Hand of Dust on him, since (by the poor wording of the spell), does NOT end once cast (nor until your next Magic Phase) and can't be dispelled later on the game (since it is not a RiP spell). This will give Arkhan the combat leverage he needs to destroy much scarier things, and draw some dispel dice or generate a Raise the Dead counter!
  • He should not be out of combat the whole game! The closer he is to your target, the better used his summoning will be (and Death magic if you choose to use it). He can easily best Core troops, and can take on stuff such as Bloodletters (because of his T6 and immunity to Killing Blow) and Nurgle troops (Thunderstomp if he fails with his WS4).
  • Don't worry about some wounds, say... elves may inflict upon him with his Ini 3, that's how he heals, after getting beat.
  • He can also take on Cavalry if you're skilled, even if he has Str 5, he can counter Instability with his own First of the Mortarchs and maybe a Morghast guard nearby (cavalry is usually Str 4).
  • He must get into combat in order to heal, but can't take on Special or Rares by himself. Anything with Str 4 or less will struggle to wound him! He is not an empire wizard, but an Undead, so get him into combat!

Was wondering what has worked out for you guys more.
Using arkhan or nagash ?
It seems like nagash is always a bit over the top with his summoning whilest arkhan hits most of the sweet unit sizes for most options.

Apologize if is a stupid question,I'm in a hurry writing a list. Magical object are considered upgrade when summoning characters?

Yes, Magical objects are upgrades to characters!

And about Arkhan or Nagash.. I don't have a definitive answer to that, but I'd lean over Nagash because of his triple summoning range and better combat stats. With Arkhan, you'd need to also purchase a killy V. Lord / SGK to compensate, and that isn't always bad, mind you.
