Thanakhton Rising! A Tomb Kings paintlog

This here be my paint log!

Instead of re-shooting all my minis, I decided to share pics I already made

The dynasty has a very barebones (heh) background/lore, something about the city of Raskhetar being ruled over by Pharaoh Amerses, with exarch Djet-Khatra as head advisor and high priest. The city's foundation is built onto the bones of gigantic beasts, that are reanimated and obey the will of Amerses, roaming the dunes - think island on giant turtle from mythology, but in the desert.

I either design and print fully, or kitbash or somehow customize most of my models.

Paint recipes

The idea behind the painting process was to keep it simple. Therefore all the painting is done with layering using a size 2 brush - only exceptions are: primer and varnish are airbrushed, sand is drybrushed, and washes are used very rarely

Unless otherwise noted, all paints used are Vallejo Model Color

Sometimes it is far easier to achieve smooth blends by mixing the two colors you want to transition between, and using the mixed color as another step in the gradient, rather than doing a million glazes. When I do this, I will indicate it with a + between the paint names
  • black primer
  • leather brown - only leave black visible in deep, sharp recesses
  • scrofulous brown (Vallejo Game Color)
  • tan yellow
  • ice yellow
  • black primer
  • cavalry brown - only leave black visible in deep, sharp recesses
  • cavalry brown + heavy orange (Vallejo Game Color)
  • heavy orange (Vallejo Game Color)
  • heavy orange (Vallejo Game Color) + deck tan
  • deck tan
I use A LOT of transitional mixed colors here, usually 2-3 in increasingly lighter ratios before movi
  • black primer
  • black + sky blue
  • sky blue
  • sky blue + dead white (Vallejo Game Color)
  • dead white (Vallejo Game Color)
  • flat green
  • sybarite green (Citadel)
  • pastel green
Red tiles:
  • burnt red
  • mephiston red (Citadel)
  • evil sunz scarlet (Citadel)
Blue tiles:
  • caledor sky (Citadel)
  • caledor sky (Citadel) + electric blue
  • electric blue
  • leather brown
  • stone grey
  • bone white (Vallejo Game Color)
  • leather brown
  • ochre brown
  • deck tan
  • nuln oil wash (Citadel)
  • deck tan
  • burnt red + xereus purple (Citadel) - a mix used as a base color
  • druchii violet wash (Citadel)
  • warlord purple (Vallejo Game Color)
  • warlord purple + ice yellow - in 2-3 layers of increasing lightness
  • ice yellow
  • black primer
  • dark sea blue
  • blue green
Dark flesh:

Bright flesh:
  • black brown
  • leather brown
  • mournfang brown (Citadel)
  • mournfang brown (Citadel) + scrofulous brown (Vallejo Game Color)
  • mournfang brown (Citadel) + scrofulous vrown (Vallejo Game Color) + ice yellow - here i just add ice yellow to the previous mix to lighten it a bit
Dark flesh:
  • black brown
  • leather brown
  • leather brown + ice yellow
  • mournfang brown (Citadel) - here I dilute it a lot and just use it as a filter

Djet-Khatra, Hierophant of the Shifting Sands

Following ancient tradition, he has a big hat, a cool staff, and a cloak of dunes

Another self-design.

Tomb Scorpion

Another one designed by meself.
Main inspiration were the designs in Total War, which far surpasses the model offered by GW. None of the alternative models scratched that itch, so I did it myself.

Fun fact, its modular and highly posable with ball joints, and functional hinges in the knees and pincers.

Unit champ

banner guy

the lot of them

  • The necrolith zombie dragon mixbash - its so big and spindly and i havent quite figured out what color i want to paint which parts, i was thinking to paint the wing bones gold, the membranes some dusty grey, whatever is basecoated blue as dark blue stone (like sphinx and titan), but i am not sure it would look like it makes sense to have such very organic looking parts painted as such non-organic materials?

  • And i have started working on my own, updated Ushabti because GW didn't update them - very early WIP

Raven Torrid Oooh what ancient magic did you use to do that :O Thank you!

And thanks for the kind words too! I definitely want a group shot at some point, but I want a bit more substantial army first :)

Edit: To answer the hypothetical question: I am definitely a better painter xD My modeling "workflow" is all over the place, super time intensive and inefficient haha.

This is a superb army, and the best compliment I can give you is that this is really tempting me to collect a TK army as well, even though I would never paint this well! If you ever wanted to, we would very much appreciate painting guides on some of those techniques - the bronze is beautiful. I also especially love the glowing eyes etc, this one blew my mind 🤯

As for the Necrolith Zombie Dragon, I think going bronze might not look right, as you say it is a very organic modal, and it might be a nice contrast in the army having something that is less bronze?

Oh, and don't forget to add a link to your 3D STLs in your signature!

Updated first post with most of my paint recipes - these are the ones I stick to, whatever else comes up I mostly just wing it.

Disciple of Nagash
Do eeeet, get some dry deads! :D

I will try to remember to do some step-by-dtep images when I sit down to paint next :D

Thanks for the input on the dragon, I'll mull over it a bit more 🤔

Is there a guide for setting up signatures? looked through settings and didnt find where to edit it :(

Hey there, for signatures click on your name at the top of the screen on the right side next to the envelope. You'll see a list of options, Signature is near the bottom on the left.
