What's more universal than desert?
it's good for fantasy (Tomb Kings and so on)
It's good for 40k (Tallarn and so on)
It's good for Bolt Action (North africa campaign)
what's cheaper than desert? you only need cardboard and glue (plus some paint and some sand)!
Back to 40K buildings! (well, a small fortified position)
materials:
polystirene (a piece of… something, destined to trash.)
glue
newsday paper
some metal wire, recovered from the spiral holding a 2020 calendar
various bits
Here's the WIP
as you can see the starting material was too good to be thrown away, as it's almost ready and requires just a minimal work
after some work…
almost ready to be painted. please note the "hole" in the turret, for the placement of the Admech weaponry.
the last update here was one year ago. Time to revive this.
One thing i lack is forests. THey are useful for basically any game, be it 40k, fantasy, hystorical (bolt action, black powder)...
talking about s100% spare parts, i've stumbled upon a green mat that once was used to cover a working desk and (now that the desk is no more) it was literally being thrown away in the garbage.
I couldn't be. not given that i even have an official GW base for woods.
i was able to cut 13 pieces of terrains... not bad, it would be enough even for a full-jungle scenario.
THen i was able to recover some very old square tile with trees, many of them snapped, which were laying in a forgotten box in our gaming store basement.
"nice, can i take them?"
"sure, go for it".
and now...
yes, it's not that great and yes, it can (and will) be improved... but i've paid only the cost of the glue and 2-3 hours of work.
OK, this one is literally the cheapest one (and also the laziest. no work at all).
Anyway, a couple of evenings ago when i was taking out the bag of plastic waste, i found that someone threw away a couple of (still perfectly fine) old CD holder, which were laying over the other plastic bags, ready to been taken away the morning after.
These are the items:
But are they really CD holders?
...an Imperial hangar outpost?
a Necrons' gauss energy conduit?
They are basically battle ready!
Maybe I'm going to just add some metallic grey on the "ribs", or maybe i will add a internal cover so you won't see through it.
OK, this is not a self-made terrain... and it's not even a terrain, just pieces of sceneries.
However, i would say it qualifies, as i went through a search in the Big Boxes of Free Bits in our gaming shops, and scattered among various things, i found some very interesting and unused items:
which i took (nothing is cheaper than "for free") and painted:
and after some glueing and rust effects, here's the completed scenery pieces:
Steel pallets, with crates of ammunitions and oil drums (and an antitank obstacle)
