After going through and comparing the different bloodlines powers with each other I have begun to wonder why the von Carstein's have powers such as summon wolves, summon bats, summon winds(?) etc....I know that in the novel Dracula, Dracula can transform into a bat and summon and control wolves, such as when Jonathan is leaving the castle out the main door.... but I havent found any fluff that really explains why the von Carstein get these specific powers which control the lands around them.

The Von Carsteins have a very presented relationship between the creatures they summon such as the Wolves and the bats in that they themselves transform into their creatures and both happen to be indigenous to Sylvania.

The Von Carsteins have ruled in Sylvania for a long time now and they have become so interwoven with the land and its people that everything within the land seems to react to them.

Sylvania is also actually saturated in warpstone dust making it one of the most magically receptive places in the Old World too, so the Vampires can literally control the land at will as almost all Vampires have a natural ability to perform necromancy.

Very, very nice summary Voltaire.

As an extension, it is interesting to note that is has almost become practice for von Carsteins to carry with them canisters of grave-dirt from the area in which they were given the blood kiss (or similar emotionally-involved grounds). The latent power of the soil actually allows them to tolerate or even overcome some of the curses of Nagash - vulnerability to sunlight, severe allergic reactions to some metals, etc

Why do you think it is that these bits of soil are so 'charged' with energy?

My own hypothesis for this is that is shows these emotionally involved moments seem to radiate something a lot stronger than normal magical energy because the Vampires apparent lack of souls make registering anything on the 'warp scale' a big occasion.

Believe it or not Vampires have souls..."The queen and her ancient priestsly advisor not only found the secret of eternal youth, they also managed to cut themselves off entirley from the Chaos Realm, drawing whatever aspects of the soul or spirit that resided within the Aethyr completely into themselves. So locked within the very fibre of Neferatem's body was her entire identity and a small vortex of aethyric, or spirit, energy. Not only did this mean that Neferatem and W'soran could never truly die but it also meant that their souls would be forever beyong the grasp of daemons and gods, for their soulds were inextricably bound to the particles of their mortal bodies and cut off from the Aethyr. They had become the first Vampires."

- every single element of a vampire's soul and spirit is removed from the Aethyr and cut off from it
- Though there bodies are powerful and full of vitality, the Aethyr is sealed off from us and our souls grow cold, heavy and tired in time, in a way that no other mortal could understand and in a way that cannot be alleviated with out very specific and conscious intervention.
- Through the absence of warpstone neferatem and W'soran had to find another means to revitalise their souls that would not require exposure to chaos.
- There are only two options of revitalising their souls or sink into painful and edless torpor; draw unto themselves the winds of magic as they blow across the mortal world or take for themsleves the Sekhem bound within other living beings.

Sekhem is the soul energy of living beings, all vampires slowly drain the aethyric energy, or sekhem from the environment around themselves, as the souls of the vampires are so hungry for sekhem. As part of this process, all sekhem or magic is drawn to the souls of vampires and is absorbed into dark magics, because of this when they are left alone vampires are left alone they draw all avalible magic from their surroundings and turn it into corrosive Dhar.

If a Vampire relies on this form of revitalisation for their soul, the more Dhar that saturates a soul the harsher it effects it. Some Vampires like those of W'soran rarely use the other method of revitalisation and there for their minds have suffred from their constant and willing saturation in dark magics, as have their bodies.

So basically all Vampires have a soul but because it is cut off from the Aethyr they must find ways of revitalising it either taking subconsiously absorbing the magic around them or from drinking the blood of living things.

Nice Liber Necris summary Maxim. I'd say that Jerek von Carstein probably is the ultimate Necrarch by now, and his surroundings has probably turned into a black hole... ;)

No need to act like the canon are all separate entities in dispute. They deal with different matters, and it's fine to combine the two. It's probably fair to assume that the Dwarfs enscribed runes (Oh, and numerous deadly traps of course!) on Jerek's tomb that would ward off dark magic, meaning that when he finally gave in and drew in the dark magic it wouldn't have had as much of an effect upon him, although he clearly would have gone insane. Hopefully he slept just fine.

It'd make a pretty good Warhammer Quest/ WFRP dungeon really, fight through the traps and hordes of beasts that have congregated in the tomb, then you finally reach the end and a monstrous insane Vampire is at the end...

True but GW has said before that BL is to be consider cannon in all its aspects unless controdicted by a better (Like a codex) sourse, or so i believe

I think that it is a shame that all of the good material in Liber Necris is now considered well...non-cannon, it is one of the best pieces of work to come out of the Black Library....Liber Chaotica being the best in my opinion.
