The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
It would be a "Weak Centre" strategy. Ghouls wouldn't actually be meant to hold against anything, simply to absorb shooting and gum up my opponent's centre while my fast units rolled down their flank.
Unfortunately their latest Kickstarter just ended. Their full range should probably be available to the general public at some point early next year, though. I know the final wave of their kickstarter releases is being shipped out in February.
"...and then I activate *THIS* King's MWBD ability, which allows the unit to shoot again and...hey...wait...what are you doing? Stop that! Stop trying to hack out my knees. Get off me!"
"Ha! You're kneeling now! You lose!"
"...fuck you."
Not really. At 65 pts they're the cheapest unit with enough movement to make a difference.
Only trouble is that they're troops, so might cause some force org issues.
My current plan is to do a centre of ghouls and revenant cavalry, then outflank with vampire lords and werewolves. Ghouls will...
I've thrown in with two fantasy games going forward:
KINGS OF WAR
Pro:
- very tournament friendly.
- can use my existing models.
- tight, easy to learn ruleset.
- mass battle!
Con:
- lacking a lot of the flavour that gave WHFB character.
- rules lack some of the (largely unnecessary)...
That there is quite obviously a pecking order between units is the very crux of the problem: there is absolutely no reason to take something like a unit of skeletons, because the game is entirely based on "models" and a unit of 50 skeletons is objectively worse than 50 individual bloodthirsters...
Age of Sigmar has lots of flare but is lacking in the functionality department. Kings of War is a well-oiled machine, but is very perfunctory in exectution.
I think given time, Kings of War will turn out to be the gold standard for fantasy mass battles. Yeah its not perfect now, but the company...
Let me know. I'm really interested how to make KoW work in the chaff department. Seems like the game is somewhat lacking in cheap, fast, disposable units like WHFB had. Would also be interested in a way to make that work out.
For the record, the spreadsheet is the beta rules. I have a PDF of the final rulebook and the presentation is more along the lines of what you'd expect with WHFB (though understandably lower production value).
Age of Sigmar does indeed look fun to play. I've even said that myself. But there's...
I'm strongly considering going with a pair of peg vampires for larger games, backed up by werewolves (vargheists), wights (ushabti), and revenant cavalry (BK). Move fast and hit hard where my opponent is weak. Fragile, but that's the way I like my undead.
It's an undertaking on an entirely different scale, though. ETC made a few tweaks to elements of WHFB 8E that they found obnoxious, and limited the number of objectively undercosted units/combinations that you could take.
Swedish was a similar thing, but on a more granular scale. They basically...
There's a big difference between an imperfect system and no system at all. ETC and Swedish took some of the rougher edges off GW's flawed game design, but building a system up from scratch is a very different beast.
More importantly...the "Community" is not a contiguous hivemind. It's thousands...
No, I fully understand. I've been looking all over for avenues to vent about how much this pisses me off, and have not been paying attention to whether the venues I choose are appropriate or are detrimental to others' discussion. I'll watch myself in the future.
It just...makes me so fucking...
Absolutely, it is 100% the hubris of a creator wanting to dictate the terms of how his art is enjoyed, to keep it in line with his original vision. Warhammer is an battlefield RPG to them, and that's really what Age of Sigmar is. It's Dungeons & Dragons, how certain feats aren't even remotely...
Lol. Don't get me fucking started :P
TO is a major TO in our area, though he's a bit of a fluff bunny himself. His initial thought was to keep running 8th ed events, but the community is pretty cool on that option. KoW seems to be the only thing sparking any interest, so this is kind of a...
No worries at all!
Other thing I'm thinking of is perhaps using a Tomb King mounted on a warsphinx as a "Revenant King on Undead Wyrm". I've got a couple extra warsphinx boxes kicking around, so might be a good chance to finally try one out.
Shame this tournament is only 1,000 points though...
