So in our local store we are doing a Mighty Empires Campaign with monthly point escalation, progressive characters and using most available End Times rules (Khaine Magic and Elven lists, Undead Legions, Chaos lists. The rules we aren't using are scenery specific and narrative senarios).


We have reached the 1500 points ...point and I'm left with the choice of facing The Greenskin Empire (now including Empire, Brettonians, Dwarves and Ogres) or the Elves (Who are all playing Phoenix King Host rules), other independent races still on the map are Undead Legions and Chaos, but we have the other 2 empires between us.

Today I played and got smashed so i'm looking for feedback on my list because I really am having trouble seeing how to beat either of these at this level.

(I had an extra 240pts for this battle, spent it on a unit of Ghouls w/Champ and an extra Skeleton.)

Vampire Lord, L4 (LoV), Armour of Silvered Steel, ToPres, QS, RF. (No progression as he got nailed by a frost phoenix in his last game).

(Campaign Freebie, up to 170pts) Necro, L2, LoV, Seed, Staff Of Damnation.

Vamp, BSB, L2, LoSh, Cursed Book, HA, Ench Shield. AoDM, Supernatural Terror.

20 Skeletons, FC.

29 Skeletons, FC, Screaming Banner

24 Zombies, FC

20 Crypt ghouls, ghast.

Corpse Cart, Balefire.

20 GG, HwSh.

I got wrecked, my VL kept fluffing rolls and even in a challenge against a Noble ended up dying to crumble (in with GG) without managing to kill in return. Highlight was a unit of Dragon Princes getting taken out by Skeletons with a Vampire BSB, Vamp did 2 wounds, Skells did remaining. Vamp then took out 2 Cold One Knights but that was last turn so no resolution.


So I have no idea what changes to make. I feel my list is too top heavy but cant see how to change it and still deal with the threats. High Elf archmages with book of hoeth in a unit of 20 swordmasters, a horde of spearmen with the Banner of World Dragon that take up the whole Core allotment at 1500 by themselves, Level 4 Night Goblin Shaman with Lore of Undeath, and Artillery.

I am in serious need of guidance, im re-reading the handbook again.

I don't think you need 8 levels of magic at 1500 points so you could save a bit there. Are you playing the rules where all wizards are loremaster? You also seem over on core and have a random unit of 20 skeletons. Save 80 points by dropping the unit and adding 10 to the other unit. Anyhow, those are a couple areas you could save and put points in to other areas. Considering the models you have, maybe add a few more sword and board grave guard and give them a magic banner, either the razor banner or the banner of the barrows. For the Vamp lord, I think nightshroud will protect him more than a 2+ armor save so that's something to consider. Also, why no magic weapon on the vamp lord?
 
I think the main weakness of your list is that your units are too small even for 1.5k. Skellies should be 35, better 40 bodies. If you need more tarpits, switch the 20 skellies for zombies. 20 gouls can be used 7 wide on the flank. if they are ment to be a hammer, better increase ro 35+ and horde them. 20gg is much too small, too. and they are way better with gw. (sadly, as ilke the s&b models more)
obviously you have to get the points somehow, e.g. as mentioned above by dropping wizard levels and the corpsecart. also some equipment is pretty pricey. 8 more skellies instead of the SoD, 10 more instead of AoDM and supernatural terror. i would even think about the cursed book twice. it is really a good item, but all the magic support will not win you a game without the troops to support. ;)
the rest is quite playable in your campaign.
