2v2 - Soulblight v Stormcast

Tomorrow we are going to play a narrative game, based on the "bell" scenario in our handbook
we'll be 2 v 2, each player with 1500 pts, so it will be 3000 v 3000

i expect a double SC lists both filled with the new dragons.

my partner will bring a Vrykos list, more or less composed this way:
VLoZD (with Sangsyron)
necromancer
VL afoot
40 zombies
20 grave guards
30 skellies

which is basically very similar to the list i was thinking to bring, so i've decided to opt for something different, and i would like opinions

Legion of night:
VLoZD, with pinions (general trait: unholy impetus. mount trait: foetid miasma. artefact?) 435
Mannfred von Carstein 380
20 grave guards 280
20 zombies 115
[UWSL]10 skellies 85[/UWSL]
[UWSL]5 Black Knights 100[/UWSL]
[UWSL]5 Black knights 100[/UWSL]

my reasonings: we'll have 2 ZD and a mortarch for target saturation.
I won't have a VL afoot with the arcan battle trait, but my ZD with unholy impetus will basically have the c.a. of the VL for free (buffing also Mannfred)... and it will stack on summonable uniths with Mannfred own ability, for a potential +2 attacks! and the command ability of Mannfred is too good to pass, likely bringing my VLoZD at 2+/2+
regarding the artefact i'm uncertain. if our opponents are going to bring dragons, then Shard of Night is worthless...
Without a Necromancer, Manffred will also be useful to debuff with fading vigour

of course, i have not that much troops and 20 zombies are far from ideal, BUT:
the 10 skellies will just fill my battleline. If they manage to roll that 9" charge from the reserve, they will stop / soak Unleash Hell, to give a save charge to the VLoZD and Mannfred
i know 20 zombies are not optimal, however my partner already brings big blocks of slow units, and in this scenario what only matters is the killing. if our opponents manage to cripple our heavy fast hitters and just run away, at least the 2 knight units will have the move to hunt the fugitives and deal MWs on charge. And anyway a unit of knights nearby Mannfred, that happens to enjoy the +1 attacks on both its melee weapons and +1/+1 to hit and wound is not that bad

Thoughts? suggestions?

Very interesting! I just read up on the battleplan and it seems that going heavy on summonable units is the way to go, given that you heal them back up so fast. So: Grave Guards... and you both have 20 of them so that is good.

I haven't played against the new Stormcast so I'll not be able to give much insight there. However, I would not choose Legion of Night if the opponent doesn't bring much shooting. If you don't bring Legion of Night I would go with Legion of Blood so that all your troops are resistant to debuffs and you can get more attacks on the Vlozd.

It was a very weird and abruptly short game.

Our opponents:
one list filled with SCE troops, the more resilient they could (immune to monstrous rampage, fnp 5+ and so on)
the other one full drakes (8 of them, all immune to monster actions).

In total, we had to kill 7 units

by rules, we had to take the first turn.
I placed Mannfred, VLoZD and 2x knights in the open, zombies, skellies and guards in resenrve
Due to a suboptimal placement by our opponents, i was able to charge with my knights and also mannfred and the VLoZD, this one directly on 2 units of dragons ( single and 2). I failed the charge with all the 3 reserve units.

buffed with +1/+1 by mannfred, my VL rolled 1 to wound with the breath, AND rolled 1 to activate the artefact that deals MWs if i don't roll a 1.
triple attack with the lance, double 1. The bites were saved with 5 and 6s... basically my VL wasn't able to kill a single model, only inflicted 6 wounds.

Mannfred wiped a unit of i-don't-know-what SCE troops, the other ZD left alive 3 dudes on his target.

IN their turn the dragons with move-shoot in hero phase, then move-shoot and charge killed both the Zombie dragons and wiped a unit of 30 skellies of my partner. We killed one dragon.

Still it's not that bad: we need to kill 7 unit, 1 is gone and we have at least 4 units easily killable: a single dragon with 3 wounds, a unit with only a wounded dragon left, a unit with a single dragon and a SCE unit with 3 dudes, and they are in charge range of 2 units of 20 grave guards, 2 units of 40 + 20 zombies, 2 units of black knights for 2d3 MWs on charge and Mannfred.

We roll for iniziative and SCE take immediately double turn, killing all the grave guards and the majority of zombies. gg.

Bad luck mate. However, I do think the battleplan is bad for us in general as SBG is not a Killy army and rarely works om the offensive. The VLoZD is quite swingy and can go down quickly if it gets surrounded. I feel that SBG is strong at winning the objectives game but weak at winning actual combats.

Yeah... but in the end it was intended as beer & preztel game, as we mostly wanted to try the narrative battleplans in the various battletomes.
I'm not impressed, AoS 3.0 must be played with objectives.

We mostly had fun on how much overpowered are the new drakes... pretty sure in the futute they will be heavily nerfed.

I think so as well. They look pretty dominant on the tournament scene but maybe people also need time to figure out how to counter them.

Thanks for the report! My local meta has shifted from casual play to...dragons everywhere. They are definitely challenging to play against. I have not had much luck against high caliber tournament lists.

I think lots and lots of zombies could do well against the dragon list. But then we'll have to paint bucket loads of minis and that takes time 🙈. I would like to field two blocks of 60 zombies but I don't have enough spare time and hype to get through that many paint jobs.

Is this usually the case? Is combat not so much a thing in AoS?
Yes winning combats are not as important in AoS 3 as in WHFB. In my own experience and when you look at the tournament scene people very rarely get tabled. It is all about Objectives and Battle Tactics.

I have painted 80 zombies so far. I do not know if I can muster the willpower to assemble and paint another 40.
