Hello all,

Pretty straight forward, but I'd like to keep the models within the GW range, as I frequent tournaments and GW sponsored events. My thoughts were either Empire Flagellants (although its been done to death) or DE Executioners.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

The Zombie sprue is an easy way to get lots of Scythes. I'm having trouble trying to think of any cloaked models to put them on (especially plastic). Perhaps Ringwraiths from LotR?

It was a thought, but then you cannot win presentation and/or best overall at GW tournaments ... sadly it has to stay in the GW Fantasy range I believe.

Shame that - I used the regular Banshee model with a sword, and worked from there
Now she has a new sword - from the skelly sprue - a new head from the daemonette sprue (the unit champion too :)) and a new out stretched hand from the Ghouls sprue, just a random one free of bones

Add a coat of white paint, and banshamazing!

Might be difficult depending on the body ya choose. One with rags might be a tad simpler- you can follow the rags "flow" and copy them. I love fluffys idea. It sounds fab, ill have to try it.
For a wraith unit, I would take the zombie scythe and plonk it neatly in the hand of a GS fu/ skelly smashed flagellant.
Cairnwesome!

I'm not 100% certain but I think the old limitation on using LotR stuff in Fantasy/40K is no more, so you should be able to enter them for best painted.

You can make wraiths out of the corpse cart rider with the zombie sprue scythe without too much trouble.

I think I might pick up a box of HE Sword Masters and the Banshee model to try to see how they work out. I've got a bunch of left over skull heads from the GG and SW spurs that I could replace the helmed elven heads with, and they do have GW's, so that fits. I'll post pics before and after I paint them.

Personally I don't think theirs much wrong with them, they are a bit plain (no interesting detail) but perfectly functional.
But it's often nice to convert your own just to have something that looks a bit different.

The old Lahmia for Banshee, or if you can't get your hands on one of those anymore, a Dark Elf Sorceress/Witch Elf (suitably converted ofcourse).

Wraiths are slightly trickier, but I'd go Brettonian Men-at-Arms, depending on your theme, you could use different style, but similar models.

What about the new Grave Guard models with Great Weapons. They are good enough. 2 units of 5 will do nicely.

The GW aren't bad at all, the only problem I have is that thier cost means its expensive for me to get that full unit of 10 I want. I think with the spare skellie / GG bits I should be able to make half-decent ones.

You stole my idea! I'm usin an old Lahmian as a new Banshee. I've decapitated her, but I expect many opponents will ask "how does she scream?!?!?!" (as many have asked how my Varghulf flies without wings, roll eyes), so I may add a screaming-style skull to her.

um...

Forgive the stupid question...

Whats wrong with the GW Banshee and Wraiths?

What I mean by this, and what everyone else seems to have missed, is that: without knowing why alternatives are needed, how can we know the best way to replace them?

If you want them to fit better into your themed army then we need to know the theme.

If every other unit in your army is a converted alternative then everything is free game.

But if the issue is cost oriented. Then a lot of the suggestions already mentioned are in fact more expensive.

I find the Citadel wraiths and Banshee to be very satisfactory in their fulfillment of this roll both in detail and in (yes I am going to say it) price. The whole unit cost me $60 which makes it one of the cheapest units in my army. Their effectiveness on the table is easily worth this much. It's not a cheap hobby that we have here.

I personally find nothing wrong with the GW Banshee, which I have purchased. What I do not like about the wraith models is they look like Death (note: capital D).

From the fluff right out of the book, I'm inclined to view wraiths as undead specters of long dead warriors, and black flowing robes with huge scythes just don't fit that image. I picked up 2 blisters of LotR Barrow Wights, and I feel that they very much fit my idea of what a Wraith looks like.

Now on a side note, if some one asks me if I am going to replace my Wraith on the Black Coach, that is a negative, as Death should ride something like that. It just fits his persona :P

I do like the current models, but modding them makes them all the more cool :)
I'd use them, but swap this and that with them, like heads and GSing new cloaks going in different directions (still working on it:P)

Just so long as I'm not re-using the same models again and again, I can't stand it

Mine are Flaggelant bodies, skellie arms, and scythes from Swords, banshee is the same, skellie torso and Daemonette head, working on greenstuffing them together at the mo.

Check out Black Tree Design, they have models called Spectral Warriors or such, skeletal bodies on top, wielding large scythes, with the lower portions morphing into twisting spirit form at the base... I think I picked up 14 or 15 of them for $22 at Noble Knight, or can directly order from BTD for $28. I used them as part of my custom Spirit Host models, but may also use single based miniatures as my 'Wraiths' since they would fit well compared to the spirit hosts I have put together.
For the Banshees, I like the Reaper female spirits, and Rackham makes a nice howling shrieker in their Limbo of Acheron line.
