Zombies

Heya nibblers. Took part in a nice 2 day, 5 game, 2400 comped tourny over the weekend. First "proper" games since new book release.

I decided to take a comedy army of maximum zombie raise. I would try to drown my enemies in a seemingly endless wave over mouldy zombies, clawing at my opponents, after brains.

Lvl 4 vamp, Hvy Ar, Sh, ToP, DA, BP, SCofN.
Lvl 1 Vamp (Shadow), BsB, Hvy Ar, Lichbone Penant
Lvl 1 Necro, Dispell Scroll
Lvl 1 Necro, Scroll Shielding
Lvl 1 Necro, in his pants
Cairn Wraith
Cairn Wraith
20 Zombies Musician Standard x 7, yes x 7
23 Zombies Musician Standard
39 Ghouls & Ghast
Corpse Cart, Unholy Lodestone
2 Fell Bats x 3
Mortis Engine, Tome
See no punch really. Damage to be done by Ghouls...maybe...

Game 1 v Dwarves.
Flaming cannon balls did the Mortis. Dwarves did the rest in combat. Dwarves seem to never fail fear tests. Highlight 2 x Cairn wraiths being killed by a musician v 12 crossbowmen over 2 combats.
Result - Loss but not by a huge amount. Could have garuanteed a draw by castling in the opposite corner to opponent, out of cannon range, but wouldn't be fun.

Game 2 v Night Goblins
Finally a race my zombies could get there teeth in to. Fun game with death all over the board. The zombies kept getting back up, much to the horror of my opponent. A rock lobber would crush 12 and another 26 would be added next magic phase. Highlight of the game - Cairn Wraith charging a giant. He should be held up for most of the game now I chuckled. The giant rolls a 1, Yell and bawl, the giant wins by 2. Wraith goes pop!
Result Win but not by much...

Game 3 v Chaos Warriors
Loads of armour combined with about a million attacks. 1 unit of 5 knights + Lord + Hero + BsB = over 1000 points. This uber unit only managed to kill 270 points worth of zombies and a Cairn Wraith. However it was like feeding zombies into a meat grinder. My army simply could not do any damage back. At this point I was really regretting not including the unit of 10 Hexwraiths I had had a couple of practise games with.
Result loss but, frustratingly, it wasn't by a huge amount.

Day 2
Game 4 v Tomb Kings
Khalida ist with 40 archers. 80 poison shots a turn kinda damage zombies rather efficiently. At one point in the game I had all my 350 zombies on the board! See "Zombie Record" post. this was demoralising for my opponant, however his core were the archers and some chariots, everything else was hard hitting. I had tried a sneaky turn 1 turn-up attack manouvre with my Ghouls but they failed to damage his Snake-Knights and were all gone in 2 rounds of combat. It was a very slow game and we only played 4 turns. The time issue was mine as it took forever to roll for, re-roll for and actually place out all the bloody zombie models.
Result Loss but not massacred. Again just couldn't do any damage.

Game 5 v High Elves
Well for the first time ever I found myself on the bottom table. Due to odd numbers I was facing a stand in player. A High Elf army, written in 5 minutes on day 1. However using this army was one of the top 20 WFB/40K in the country...erm... Game went well but had a little bad luck with enemy break tests. Only got to the start of my turn 5 and it was really in the balance. Unfortunately time ran out and my opponent was ahead.
Result Loss but only just...

Final Position 3rd from bottom. Only the Night Goblin player I beat was really below me. The other person was the stand in player who had actually won all his games.

Conclusion...
Never taking that many zombies again. Was fun at first and really happy to have 350 on the board at one point. However, timewise it was a nightmare. Took far too long to set up all the models. Also I need to add some punch to the force. Really not sold on the Mortis Engine. It's really handy for adding that +2 to casting. BUT. The regen was useless. I can see it will be good with Crypt Horrors but I didn't seem to pass a single bloody one. It is also a huge liability with all those war machines out there.

Keep your eyes peeled for more event run by Battlecult, all in the Bristol area. Next one is a 1 day, 3 game event, in early March. I will be adding some decent punch to my list, including getting the vamp lord stuck in the thick of the fighting. And not taking so many bloody zombies!
