I'm trying to draw up my units, but I don't know how the points are managed on the side, especially characters. Please help!

Characters should be their own separate unit.
There is an option to attach a character to a unit.
If you select your character model. There is an option on the bottom left for "Attach". Then select the unit you want to attach the character to from the drop down box.

Don't forget though that (with fantasy at least) you also need to add an additional model to the unit as the character sits on top of one of the existing guys
