So having recently picked up a Google nexus 10 tablet I have also picked up a new habit. Reading digital comics. Just wanted to recommend a great series to everyone called Invincible. Written by Robert Kirkman of walking dead fame it is a really entertaining read. Nearly the entire series is currently on sale for 1/2 price for the next couple of days on comixology. Get in quick if your interested and you can save a lot of dollars.

Anyone else who will admit to reading comics I am open to suggestions on other good series ;)

Y is killer, too. I love Brian K Vaughn's writing. If you dig Y, he wrote a book called Ex Machina which is also fun.

I worked in a comics shop for a long time, so i've got a ton of book suggestions.

Anything with Deadpool x)

I loved the darkness game on ps3. I have the free first issue of the darkness and plan to download the omnibus collected edition when I'm not broke.

Deadpool I may look into in the future as he seems funny and I like the xmen though I've not read any of their comics. The game was a let down unfortunately. Some funny jokes though.

Deadpool is hilarious. Though the comics have quite many sad moments and...sadistic ones. He is not a nice man.

I haven't read as much as I'd like to lately...but here are some:

The Marquis by Guy Davis

Rather dark and NSFW, set in a fictional 18th century France-ish setting. Revolves around a former Inquisitor (Marquis De Galle) battling demons that have infiltrated society. A very good read. (The series isn't complete yet tho, 1 out of 5 planned volumes has been released so far.)

Watchmen by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons

Need I say anything? The only Comic Book that won a Hugo award, and it deserves it. Watchmen: The Absolute Edition, an encyclopedia-sized hardcover, is worth every penny.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Another classic by Alan Moore, so far 3 volumes have been released, I have only read the first one so far.

The Redeemer by Mills, Gallagher & Reynolds

A Wh40k comic set in Necromunda, follows a group of Redemptionists led by Klovis the Redeemer, fighting against a group of Ratskins. A very very fun comic, with great artwork by Wayne Reynolds.

Some I haven't yet read, but would want to someday:

The Incal by Jodorowsky & Moebius

Have this beauty waiting on the shelf for when I'll have more time.

Loki, Thor

Two series, with great artwork by Esad Ribic, my countryman. ^^ Loki has been released some time ago, Thor started coming out recently.

Taskmaster mini-series by UDON

A significantly revised Taskmaster, heard it's very fun.

Agent X by UDON

Similar like the above one, but with Agent X, Taskmaster and Deadpool.

Flaming Carrot

A superhero parody independent/underground comic. It's weird.

Also: Corto Maltese, Hellboy, B.P.R.D., Ghost Rider...

Bonus: The best web-comic. Beartato. Beartato is bestato.

@Raven Read the Ghost Rider that Jason Aaron wrote. All of his Rider is strictly badass.

And i dug bprd. It's X-Files but there's no doubt monsters did it.

I am an avid reader of naruto and have been hooked on the manga and the anime for 4+ years.

For the apple people an app called madefire is to be recommended, sadly it is only for the iPad for the time being. It is comics with a twist, they include sound and you can move some of the pages around to get a better look of the surroundings. Pretty cool, although it is still in it's early stages. Especially the comic house of the holy, about a vampiric girl and a final stage basilisk house during WW2 is rather cool, really ominous!!

@ Raven torrid: Thanks, that will give me plenty to look into

@ Bullhax:Vampire girl in WW2? Sounds a bit like Bloodrayne. I will keep an eye out, hopefully it comes to android eventually.
Have you played Naruto ultimate ninja storm on ps3 or the sequel? They're pretty great, highly recommended for any Naruto fan.

Hate to be the hipster...

Well just lying I love it!

But why don't you try some manga out! Their plot's are a million times better than any western comic.

Hipster! KILL IT!
Just kidding! ;)

I used to think that as well. But as I've gotten older (an become more educated in the field of writing), I realized that, as a general rule (always exceptions), Mangas tend to be more stock and formulaic than western comics. Or, to put it slightly different as to not sound condescending to Manga creators, Mangas are more concerned about genre identification than western comics, which is why they can only explore their stories within a certain rubric.

Not saying this is a bad thing. Just pointing out something that I noticed.

It is much easier to go down the formula checklist in Mangas than western comics. Now, cliche plot elements and stock characters can make for very interesting stories (I enjoy YuYu Hakusho as much as the next person), but these days, I will take an Alan Moore over a Tsugumi Ohba any-day.

Just my two blood-coppers.

Hellblazer has some great storylines. I own about 90% of the full run of Hellblazer, and i've read every issue of the book. And the main downside is a lack of solid artists for a lot of the book. Still, Milligan, Ellis, Azzarello, and of course Garth Ennis, all of those guys wrote killer Constantine stories that are relatively recent (re: none of the slightly emberessing dated stuff you can find pre-2000's). In fact, you could probably start at Ennis and be fine.

And everybody worth reading has written at least an issue of Hellblazer (except alan moore, but he invented the character in Swamp Thing, so he counts). Gaiman, Morrison, Jason Aaron, those guys had fun short stories.

comic recommendation

The guys on "Who's Line is it Anyway" are pretty funny....

oh you mean comic comics?

I would highly recommend any Marvel comics to do with Loki & Thor.
I also recommend Spinnerette. Its an independent web-comic about an eight limbed heroine that is fairly tongue in cheek and has fairly progressive relationships and portrayals of female characters (something which is really refreshing to see in a superhero comic)

Watchmen is by far the best graphic novel ever written, and "Before Watchmen" is a good read too (it fleshes out the back-story and history of the characters in watchmen, focusing on their time as the minutemen and the second Silk Specters teen years)

I greatly enjoyed both the 2000 and 2009 Batgirl runs (Cass Cain and Stephanie Brown respectively). The Cass Cain run was a bit shakier at the start, and sort of fell apart in the last year or two, but was fantastic when it was good, and for quite a while she was my favorite comic chaacter. The Stephanie Brown run was more consistent, and more upbeat, but much shorter, cut off before its time by the reboot in 2011, after which the whole dcu went down the tubes, and the only thing I'd read from it is Little Gotham.

Tiny Titans is another great book if you're looking for something fun. Sadly cancelled now, like everything I ever loved at DC, but the whole run is pretty great if you get the chance to pick it up.

on the marvel end, the first chunk of Runaways was also great, even if that also fell apart after a while.

If you like dystopian futures and ultra-violent gritty science fiction, then you should totally check out Gunnm (aka Battle Angel Alita), and if you like that then the successor series Last Order. Fantastic stuff. If you like the mad scientist archetype, the primary antagonist through most of the original series is quite possibly the best example of that character type I've come across.

IF you like the Adventure Time cartoon, I can't recommend the comic book based on it enough. It really captures the spirit of the show, and it's been winning some well deserved awards since it started.

As for webcomics, there's always homestuck. If you haven't read it before, get a tumblr and liveblog that shit. It's... well it's not everyone's cup of tea, I'll say that much, and spends a lot of time goofing around with data structure jokes before getting around to the plot, and it expects you to be willing to drop the entire cast to start from scratch with a new cast multiple times, with the assorted groups meeting up later. But like it or lump it, posting your thoughts on it on tumblr as you read through it for the first time is kind of a thing to do in and of itself.
