Well, I have finally got myself a digital camera , and have decided to christen it with my dryad Zombies (with thanks to the various hints and tips received on colours, approach, etc).

The background is that these were killed in the battles of Borlin the Black (see battle reports), and he has taken tham aling with him. Members of the other races will also follow, as I get a chance and pick up the minis/parts.

I will post WIP as I go along, and with luck will finish before I go on my trip. These are the first 2 photos, being on the 40mm bases with a rock for them to crawl over. They have been undercoated in black, and one has been base coated.

Comments welcome

I haven't, Voltaire, but will do (and thanks for the comment).

I am only looking at these two, and possible another base, possibly with one more dryad and a couple of wood elves. I am then looking at a couple of ogres (I managed to pick up some cheap sprues on E-bay :)), possibly a couple chaos warriors and some marauders, some orcs and goblins and dark elves.

This takes me to where the league stands so far. I will then be looking at some Empire, Skaven and possibly Lizard men and Bretonians.

The other two players are Tomb Kings and VCs, and I probably won't do to much there (or you could say that I have this covered already).

Off to check on the black ink wash, and the next pics will follow.

Here are the next two WIP shots, with the base coats on all four dryads.

Next is a black ink wash, followed by a rough coat of bestial brown.

Also, here is the test piece that I used to try out the colours. It needs tidying up a little, but I am reasonably happy with the colours.

I believe the word that I would best use to describe that dryad is 'grimey'. Not meant insultingly, for undead wood spirits, you've hit the nail on the proverbial head in my opinion. The colours are perfect and I think they are going to look excellent when they're finished.

Now for some shameless self promotion, my new Watchman over at Warseer has an excellent article on how to photograph miniatures for the best effect. It should help you get better shots of your dryads. The pictures so far have been good though.

Thanks. That is the effect I was looking for, although the flock, basing, etc will hopefully lift/enhance it further.

I am still trying to get to grips with the little machine, and have just realised that I have lost the first ink-wash pics . Also getting a bit of glare from the flash, and working on getting more in focus.

Here are the post brown, followed by the post second wash.

They are not yet finished, with a couple of coats of paint to go, and then basing and the addition of flock, etc, to the base and possibly the minis themselves.

I am looking for a slightly messy, decaying look with the dryads gradually rottind away as they drag themselves along. Hopefully, I am getting there.

I hope to get the rest of the painting complete today. The basing may need to wat until I get back from my trip.

Progress pics to follow as I go.

I have now finished the base painting with two final hilight to brina out lichen and moss on the bark. Still getting used to the new camera, so they look a little starker and more washed out than in 'real life'.

These are after the mid hilight (50/50 Chatchan green + rotting flesh). I have also washed the stone in a thin black ink wash, and am looking to add lichen/moss to them in the same colours as on the dryads.

And these are after the final one (rotting flesh only)

that leaves me the skull and rotting leaves to do, plus the bases.

I am still mulling over red eyes, or whether to go with the dark holes as at present.

I may get to some of this before I go, else it will be a couple of weeks until I get to take this sub-project to completion.

At the moment, they look a bit hollow which while being a very bad pun, detracts from the overall malign feel of the Dryads. I would suggest trying them out with black in the eyes to see if actually making them hollow is better then going for some red gore. Red Gore is subtle enough to mix well with the colours already there but not so bright as to become the focal point like Blood Red would.
