greetings!

i'm sure that most of us have at least heard the news of the rather large ashcloud being generated by Eyjafjallajokull glacier...
honestly, you'd think that they'd have named the country 'Fireland' considering how geologically active the island is?!

so how is the situation for all you guys over in europe right now? the air quality must be getting pretty terrible by now, and the volcano is predicted to possibly continue erupting for months... (not a good thing)
hopefully no one has family/friends who have been left stranded anywhere by this event.:(
and we here in north america aren't going to be able to ignore this even either, since we'll feel the effects within a few months... (as the main ash colum has currently topped just over 6km in altitude)

still, i can't help but be feel somewhat annoyed by listening to people bemoaning about how their vactions are being ruined, when in the long run, hundreds, if not thousands of people are going to die from the growing ashcloud that's covering almost half of europe!
it's almost as if these idiots think that this was totally planned?!

still, at least we're not watching, say yellowstone exploding! since when that happens, we're all pretty damn fethed!

The ashes are so high up in the air that it doesn't affect us on ground level, at the moment. If it continues to erupt for several weeks/months I imagine that the air will be a bit polluted by it. We do get nice sunsets though :)

It's not that in what has suspected to be the dinosaurs extinction, meaning the sun ain't blocked. People won't die from this. Because here in the Netherlands it was a sunny day, one of the best days this year. Belgium, northern France and west Germany were virtually cloudless, so had a good day as well. I noticed nothing from the eruption, other than stories of people who can't travel by plane.

I heard they will be testing plane flights tomorrow from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam to see how much ash is accumulated.

Generally the only people being ''hurt'' are the people who had planned to take a vacation by airplane flight, as well as the airplane companies...

and the weather here where I am is shitty.

I don't think it's part of the eruption, but the place you live

Yeah, apart from the planes being grounded I haven't noticed anything at all. No dust or anything in the air. Was a very sunny day (which I hate), so perhaps we will notice it more when it moves further south.

Actually, its quite nice.... I live near an airport and it is lovely not having planes zooming overhead at all hours of the day.

And you say that it is bad that people can't go on holiday, well, I have a friend who can't come back from holiday... he has been stuck in Las Vegas for a week ! Although it sounds fun, I imagine he will come home broke !

Yup Netherlands is shiny and sunny. Only thing I noticed, after my dad told me, is that the sunsets are a very intense red because of all the particles in the sky.

I don't think so many people are going to die but there is a change that folks who already got diseases like asthma will have a rough time. Also, not to flip people out here, there is another bigger volcano close by that near unpronounceable one that is known to go pop right after the smaller one goes. That sucker is huge and could cause a lot more problems.
Sometimes I hate my scientific-minded dad when he tells me about this stuff and continues about tsunamis reaching the Netherlands when the big one would completely blow up instead of a normal eruption...:O Gee, thanks dad I love ya too!

well, look at this way; the bigger one is still a slight hiccup compared to how all of north america is going to explode! we have Yellowstone! it hasn't had a super eruption for about 100,000 years.

if you think this ash cloud is a pain, try imagining one big enough to cover 85% of the entire US and parts of canada. (just so we can suffer with the yanks too of corse!)

cheers!

Stupid volcano... now my brither, sister-in-law, and nephew might not make it here for my sister's wedding!

*looks into launching Iceland into space*

You just had to bring that up didn't you? *groans* Ah well my ex is living near there so hopefully it will be truly freak eruption and only her house will blow up...yeah. Oh my...evil thoughts....:innocent:

Well, there are very few times that I enjoy living in windy Scotland, but now is one of them. The wind has blown all the ash out of Scotland and now as of tomorrow our Airports will re open, with flights to America (Basically, the ash has formed a blockade, stopping us going anywhere else...)

I'm actually stuck in San Francisco because of that stupid eruption. Could be stuck in a worse place I suppose, but it is screwing with my work schedule.
Aside from that, anyone here live in San Francisco and wants to meet up? I'm here 'till next monday (at the very least). :)

Cheers, Wolfie

We wont see the cloud in the sky , because they are 20-30000 feet up and apparently at 1pm today Ireland was at the centre of the cloud . Ireland and the uk are rightly boned because were islands but at least the uk has the channel tunnel to connect it with Europe we have nothing but boats . Even Whitney Houston ad to get the ferry over from England .
If this whole airport closure malarkey continues for much longer Ireland is kin of the most shafted , We rely on all the tourists more than anything else for our economy . There are a few flights still going out to the states though so we'll still have the yanks coming over :) .

Yep, my scottish lungs are breathing clean scottish air!
As for flying, since I'm not going anywhere I really couldn't care less about all of the airplanes being grounded! If you can't walk there it isn't worth going too!

To be honest I'm getting bored of this whole thing, it's just filling the news with people whining about not being able to get out of where they are to get some where else.

Too the people trapped in the spanish isles, make the most of it, you have a free pass to have fun for a few more days in a foreign country, a few more days out of the office to work on your tan that you can't do anything about and that your boss can't fire you for. We all know this isn't going to blow over tomorrow, so you may as well have the common sense to go out and enjoy your life by making the most of the cards you are dealt.

Too the people hoping to be flying out to a sunny beach in the next week, cancel your flight, scrap the holiday, get as much money back as possible from your insurance and travel agent and get on with life. Save it away for something else, like a new car or a rainy day. (heck chuck about £40 away for the 8th edition rule book)

Just get back to living life, learn to cope with a situation beyond your grasp/control and get off of the news with your story, quit giving the BBC more reason too do human interest stories instead of reporting on real news.

That was more rant-tastic than I meant it too be and I could easily have deleted it all and left a different comment, to be honest I really only meant to post the first paragraph, but I honestly think that this forum is mature enough to handle an opinion.

And yet mr Pietr, im still angry at the people I see on TV who are coming back.
Do you know why?
Because they look like people that were pulled from buildings in an earthquake. But they haven't suffered anything like someone who was directly affected by a natural disaster. They look like they have been through something with their weepy eyes and quivering lips. I don't know if I should punch them in the face or hand them the oscar for "Hammiest Performance since that lump of Pork performed Shakespeare".
And another thing.
The British Press had better get a grip of themselves. Lord Mandelson announced that the best way to help the british citizens trapped abroad was to use the British Navy. I agree with this plan 100%, it makes sence, if they cant travel by sky, take them by sea. But then the press declare that its "Mandelson's Dunkirk!"
No way in hell is this anything like the Dunkirk plan, anyone confusing a few annoyed and slightly sunburnt tourists to thousands of soldiers trapped by a ruthless enemy in a forgeign land needs to get their head checked. Dunkirk was a great symbol of british pride, hundreds of average people stepped up to the mark to help their soldiers fighting their war and sailed out to Dunkirk in whatever they could find to save the lives of young fighting men. With all due respect too the Royal Navy who I hope to join in a short while, three royal navy boats going to pick up tourists who can't get a flight is not the same thing.

I agree Ironlord. When I saw the news tonight that the "blame game" had started I turned to my dad and sait "Who are they going to blame? The friggin Volcano?"

Wow, so you were stuck elsewhere for a few days. It could have been a lot worse. Think of all the people in bloody iceland that have to breath toxic ash, that are likely in danger of being exposed to magma!

People these days are so selfish sometimes...

"Eyjafjallajokull"
Try saying it 5 times fast.

I wish I was in europe to see the epicness of that ash cloud, but I live in Australia. We don't have volcanoes in australia. Unless Uluru erupts, but it wont because its just a big red rock that we aren't aloud to climb anymore.

I dunno about the rest of the country, but up here in breathable Scotland there isn't much to see (Could be because the ash has been blown away from us but still...)

Seems God likes the Scottish...

Hey, I'm stuck in San Francisco and I'm having way more fun than I expected. Dunno why people are so shaken by having to stay a while longer, it's basically a free holiday. Sending in the Navy is a bit much though and comparing it to Dunkirk is both crazy and an insult to the original Dunkirk operation.
