So, I'm just getting into Warhammer and this is going to be my first army. Been doing a lot of research, planning, and forum lurking and I'd like to share with you guys what I've been working on. I love the undead and so a Vampire Counts army was a no brainer for me. I settled on using Mantic miniatures for the majority of my army but will probably use some GW minis here and there. To get started I picked up Mantic's Mhorgoth's Revenge for a screaming deal through Miniature Market via ebay a few weeks ago. This came with a good amount of undead minis and Dwarfs. I'll be putting a dwarf army together too at some point but I'm concentrating on the VC army first.

RE: A New Evil Arises

Was brain storming ideas on how I wanted to go about painting up my army and I did a ton of research on different techniques and came across dipping. If done well it can produce some very nice results with less work. So I started experimenting with this technique. I picked up a can of Minwax polyshades in Antique Walnut Satin. Then I primed up some old minis I had lying around in white. Then I painted them up with an array of different colors in order to test the polyshade on different colors and see what kind of results I could come up with.

I tried the pliers, dip, and shake method and after seeing the minis dry I concluded that I didn't get enough of the dip off but I could see the potential if done a little better.

RE: A New Evil Arises

After spending a couple weeks cutting all the minis off the sprues (both the undead and dwarves) and assembling them. I decided to start in with the unit of skeletons.
I really liked the effect the polyshade created on reds on the test models which is awesome being that I love red and it goes well in an undead army. I also decided to try and paint on the polyshade this time in order to control the amount applied and to better control pools of it in places.
I wanted a simple paint scheme as I am planning on painting up quite a few skeletons and this was also going to be an experiment in how fast I could paint up a unit of skellies to a descent standard. I chose scab red to be my main color throughout the unit. This would be the colors of their tattered robes and their shields. I did a test model using scab red, a silver roughly equivalent to chainmail, and a green equivalent to goblin green(eyes). The color of the bone was left primer white.

This is my first test skeleton and is shown after painting on the polyshade and letting it dry. The only thing I did to after that was lightly dry brush the edge of the shield and the chainmail. I was really happy with the way it turned out and settled on using this color scheme to complete the unit.

I chose that particular mini to do a test on because of the simplicity of that particular skeleton. I only used three colors not counting the primer. Next I fully base coated two more models and again painted on the polyshade. In this pic you can see the one on the left is just base coated and the one on the right has had the polyshade applied. On these two I experimented a bit with what brown to use to do the boots and belts. The one on the left had scorched brown on the boots and the one on the left has graveyard earth on the boots and inside of shield.

The scorched brown was much too dark after the PS was applied but i liked the graveyard earth okay but wasn't totally satisfied. On the next model I tried a bit of chestnut ink straight out of the pot.

RE: A New Evil Arises

The finished unit looks great! clean painting, thought the colours are a bit light for my taste. I really like the close up of the guy with the axe in his skull!

RE: A New Evil Arises

Great job! Basing looks good, movement tray done well, and the dip (which I used to paint my Tyranid army millions of years ago) seems to have done the trick. Overall I think you should be very pleased with the final product. Superb beginning to your undead horde, and worthy of a +1 from me!

RE: A New Evil Arises

Thanks for the kind responses! I've really enjoyed the time spent painting them and am really satisfied with how they turned out. Next up on the docket is ZOMBIES!

Here's a quick preview of what's to come. I added some putty to the severed head to look like the head was actually severed as it is just flat and smooth otherwise. This guy is just simply base coated and will get the full treatment with the rest of the unit soon.

RE: A New Evil Arises

Nice work so far. Picked up a whole bunch of mantic stuff myself to supplement the horde, much easier on the wallet, particularly where I reside.

I like the colours on the skeletons, especially the green eyes. Something I may have to try on my doggies.

RE: A New Evil Arises

Don't tempt me with more minitures, the wife says I have too many already!

I'm not a fan of the dipping thing, things don't come out quite right for me. I did like how they came out after you brushed on the varnish, though. If I may suggest, a coat of a matte sealer would really make your minis pop!

I look forward to seeing more form you. :)

RE: A New Evil Arises

Looking very good.I used to dip some models but I discovered that if you suspend paint or ink in clear glaze medium and then brush it on,it produces much the same effect but gives you alot more control.

RE: A New Evil Arises

Actaully alot of the reason I love mantic is they look alot like some of the older older gw stuff. Wait they have some of the same sculpter's I been told.

The skeleton with the raven picking out the brains is one of them. I even have some of the old gw sculpts to compare too. There is alot of similarities though the size is not one of them. Where alot of others in my area despise mantic I love them. I think it's Dons fault

RE: A New Evil Arises

So here's the finished unit. I know there is a lot of repetition as far as models go but that will be remedied once i've painted up more zombies and can switch out some from this unit. I just wanted to get 20 up and painted so i could play with them. Regardless, i am super stoked about how these turned out and i had a lot of fun painting them up. Looking forward to painting up gobs and gobs more.

RE: A New Evil Arises

Took a break from painting my undead hordes to restore an old miniature from the Mordheim days in the late 90s. I never played warhammer back then but did get in a few games of Mordheim. I didn't really get any good before pics but I stripped off the paint and started from scratch on her. I threw in a pic I had of her when i was testing polyshade dip on minis. Yep,my Mordheim warband of ole has been serving as my test minis but I'm also planning on using my necromancer from that warband also. He'll be on here before too long too.
I mounted her(ugh) on a mantic base with some piled rocks in order to match the rest of my army and i added to the back of her cloak with some putty so her clothing flows down the back of the rock instead of just stopping dead straight across the back. She's looking good for an "old lady".

RE: A New Evil Arises

Back to painting some units. Here's a few mantic ghouls that I just basecoated the flesh with a few different tones. Used some watered down graveyard earth, elf flesh, and some crappy Micheal's grey paint that actually works very well for this but not much else. Will likely just use them as zombies since I don't think they stand out much from them enough to be ghouls and I'm going to be running a skeleton heavy core anyway.

RE: A New Evil Arises

Well, I'm hoping I can keep up this plog but I must say my attention has been somewhat diverted from getting my VC army painted. Having a hard time finding fantasy players around here but no problem finding Warmachine and some 40k players. Can be hard to stay motivated on something that I'm not getting to play. But not to despair just yet! Here is the 10 ghouls/zombies finished. I say ghouls/zombies b/c I'll probably never use them as ghouls even though that's what they are.

RE: A New Evil Arises

The bright color theme seems refreshing for a change. For some reason the bass line from Thriller started playing on my head as I saw these zombies. xD
