Hi all. Recently I have found myself with a little excess money . So I go "yeah!" and race down to my local games store. Yet as soon as I look upon the £30ish armybooks I have had enough. I could buy a load of decent books for that, not what is basically a pass for me to play my armies (my armybook is outdated). So I head to a GAME shop but none of the games interest me, what is the point of buyng new games when I have unfinished ones waiting for me? This marks the first time I have been in a game shop and not been able to find anything decent.
Finally, dismayed, I turn to a thing that has never failed me before. Books. I go into Waterstones and look at the massive bookshelves bursting with tomes. Here is also the dilemma, having read so many fantasy books ( Eragon series, LotR, Innocent mage series, Magician's guild series, Vampire Wars obvs, the Dark is Rising sequence, the Witcher, all 7 HP, The name of the wind books and countless other books) I have come to a point in which not just any book will do. In fact, I am scared of reading a book that will leave me disappointed as I have a rule of always finishing books and if I ever get into a bad book it is a pain to read it cover to cover. New authors are just recycling the same old plots and I am thoroughly bored of that. The same old RPG style from 0 to hero. So I asked the guys in the store and they came up with a few books, yet all of them seem quite generic fantasy, the stuff everyone reads and which is for many of the people one of their first fantasies. What I am looking for is an epic fantasy (high fantasy) with magic and dwarves elves etc. except not the same old storyline. I do not mind if it is in the same old middle earth world (lets face it, 70% of fantasy books are set in tolkiens world, named differently and with slightly different landmarks) because it is a good, well made world. I have enjoyed vampire wars a lot and am looking for something similar, which means I need the hero to not be the "good guy" at all, just not the main bad guy. Again, I don't mind the "go on a quest to do something" but what I do mind is the main character being stupid and starting off with nothing by yet somehow managing to beat the most powerful warlock/wizard/evil guy. Basically I am looking for vampire wars welded with magicians guild with a twist. Most importantly I want vampires but not the "ooh look I sparkle lets have sex" type of vampires, the best kind is the slightly crazed magic wielding, badass awesomeness which GW actually gets right....sometimes. Any help?
