I agree with Disciple, the books should remain the same way choosing wise, but need a few tweaks.

I think it should be like the Slaan thing and you can add a 'free' dispel dice to any dispel attempt. So 1DD to any dispel attempt would be very nice and well worth the points.

Fair enough re: the alternate BSB idea - it was just that: an idea :P. The logic behind it being that the books are unique, so no army should have more than one. On top of that, as Voltaire mentioned, having such a priceless item fall into enemy hands would be a severe loss to the Legion - and hence the arcane equivalent of a BSB.

If you're happy with the way books are chosen now, then stick with it.

I do like the 'add 1DD to any dispel attempt' idea - definitely more balanced than a single auto-dispel per turn.

Either up the price considerably for book 6 (which you are probably trying to veer away from) or I would say go with the "adds 1DD dice to every dipel attempt".

Yeah, I really want to stay away from raising the points - I want to try and get each tier books equal so you would want to choose each of them.

I quite like the dispel dice idea (well I would if I thought of it lol) - so from what I can gather the general consensus is the book should add a DD to every dispel attempt, not just one dispel attempt per turn?

If you have to try to dispel with at least 1 dice to get an additional dice; it's ok.

So, the books are arcane items that don't count to the point limit of magic items, or is that wrong. So you have to take a book, and then you can't take arcane items anymore, but you still have 50/100 points for magic items?

Yeah thats basically it. I was looking at the only arcane items the Legion has would be these books (apart from scrolls / powerstones).
They wouldn't count towards the magical item allowance, but your still paying points cost, so if you keep on choosing the most expensive books, you will end up with some very expensive characters.

Ok - so based on the discussion, the Books of Nagash stand as below. As the thought is also these will be on the only arcane items apart from stones / scrolls, I have included the common items below.

Arcane Items of Nagash's Legion

The Books of Nagash
These tombs of ancient power possess the knowledge of the Great Necromancer himself. Re-written after his resurrection a copy is given to each Neophyte when he joins the ranks of the Legion. As he progresses up through the ranks, so he gains access to the more powerful and rare books. The ninth book is reserved for the Dark Lord himself, as he guards his most devastating magics closely.

All magic users must choose one book and may only choose one book. The books cannot be duplicated until all available books been chosen, then duplicates can be chosen - i.e if you had 3Lvl 1's, you would have to choose books 1 & 2, then decide whether you want to choose book 1 or 2 again.
They may only choose a books that they have access to:

Lvl 1 - may choose books 1-2
Lvl 2 - may choose books 1-4
Lvl 3 - may choose books 1-6
Lvl 4 - may choose books 1-8

The book does not count towards the characters magic item allowance nor can it be negated by an means (Law of Gold etc)

Book 1 - The Book of Summoning - 25pts
Once per magic phase the bearer may re-roll the dice(s) when casting a summoning / healing spell to see how many models /wounds are raised or healed. He must stick by the second result.

Book 2 - The Book of Binding - 25pts
If the unit that the bearer is with suffers wounds due to CR this book will negate D3 wounds. This only works on the unit, it does not work on any CR wounds inflicted on the bearer.

Book 3 - The Book of Control - 40pts
At the start of each combat phase the bearer may select any unit with the Undead rule within 24", the unit gains +3WS and +1I for the remainder of that combat phase.

Book 4 - The Book of Fear - 40pts
Any enemy troops within 6" suffer a -1 to their hit roles in combat or shooting.

Book 5 - The Book of Everlasting - 60pts
The Bearer adds D6 to his units CR at the end of combat - this does not apply if the bearer is not in a unit

Book 6 - The Book of Undermining - 60pts
This Book can automatically adds one dispel dice to every dispel attempt made.

Book 7 - The Book of Power - 75pts
Each magic phase the bearer may choose to add 1PD to every spell they cast, the decision can be made after rolling the original dice for the spell but cannot negate IF or miscast.

Book 8 - The Book of Knowledge - 75 pts
The bearer knows all spells from the Lore of Nagash and may choose another four spells from the Lore of Death, Shadows (and Dread if it is voted through)- the bearer may split his choices across the Lores if he wants.

Power Stone - 20pts
Works as described in the warhammer rulebook

Dispel Scroll - 20pts (Cheaper due to the heavy magic item nature of this army)
Works as described in the warhammer rulebook

So what do we think?

Yup.

It could be added as a magic item in the special rules for Nagash - I was thinking maybe it could combine the effects of the other books, but thats a discussion for another thread.

*bumps this thread in the night*

Made a whole bunch of tweaks to make things more elegant/clear.
Arcane Items of Nagash's Legion

The Books of Nagash
These tombs of ancient power possess the knowledge of the Great Necromancer himself. Re-written after his resurrection, a copy is given to each Neophyte when he joins the ranks of the Legion. As he progresses up through the ranks, he gains access to the more powerful and rare books. The ninth book is reserved for the Dark Lord himself, as he guards his most devastating magics closely.

All magic users must choose one book and only one book. Duplicate copies of a book cannot be taken until all available books have been chosen, after which you may take copies. e.g. If you have 3 Level 1 casters, then books 1 & 2 must taken, while the third caster has a choice between a duplicate of book 1 or book 2.

The books are limited by caster level as follows:

Lvl 1 - may choose between books 1-2
Lvl 2 - may choose between books 1-4
Lvl 3 - may choose between books 1-6
Lvl 4 - may choose between books 1-8

The book does not count towards the character's magic item allowance, nor can it be negated by any means (e.g. Law of Gold, Vaul's Unmaking, etc).

Book 1 - The Book of Summoning - 25pts
Once per magic phase the bearer may re-roll all dice when casting a summoning / healing spell to see how many models / wounds are raised or healed. If re-rolled, you must abide by the second result.

Book 2 - The Book of Binding - 25pts
If a unit containing the bearer suffers wounds due to CR, this book will negate D3 such wounds to the unit itself. The book has no effect against CR wounds inflicted upon the bearer.

Book 3 - The Book of Control - 40pts
At the start of each combat phase, the bearer may select any unit with the Undead rule within 24". The target unit gains +3 WS and +1 I during that combat phase.

Book 4 - The Book of Fear - 40pts
All enemy troops within 6" of the bearer suffer -1 to their shooting and close combat rolls to hit.

Book 5 - The Book of Everlasting - 60pts
The bearer adds D6 to his unit's CR at the end of combat. This has no effect if the bearer is not within a unit.

Book 6 - The Book of Undermining - 60pts
This book automatically adds an additional dispel dice to each dispel attempt made.

Book 7 - The Book of Power - 75pts
Each magic phase the bearer may decide to add an additional power die to each spell cast. This decision can be made after rolling the initial power dice for the spell, but cannot negate IF or miscast.
What do you mean by "cannot negate IF or miscast"? Do you mean that the additional die cannot negate IF or cause a miscast? o_o

Book 8 - The Book of Knowledge - 75 pts
The bearer knows all spells from the Lore of Nagash and may choose another four spells from the Lore of Death, Shadows (and Dread if it is voted through). The bearer may choose spells from multiple Lores.

Power Stone - 20 pts
As described in the Warhammer rulebook.

Dispel Scroll - 20 pts (cheaper due to the heavy magic item nature of this army)
As described in the Warhammer rulebook.

The wording on book #7 regarding the IF/miscast has me confuzzled, so I could use some clarification there (highlighted in red ;)).

Aside from that, I'm happy with the Library of Nagash! :D

Opps, poor wording there from me - I meant it cannot cause IF or miscast.

Anyway, I'm happy with this so this is now going to voting, I'll close this thread for the time being. If it fails to pass the vote I'll re-open it for more discussion.
