What method does everyone use to rank up a mounted character in an infantry unit? Do you mount it on some 20mm bases glued together? Place it to the side of the unit? 40x40 base?

As usual, pics welcome.

Thanks!

I would suggest just making a new unit movement tray. The main reason is because sometimes I don't want my character to be on the flank because I want him to be able to attack but not get outflanked.

I would never think to give the rider another base because those are predetermined and I wouldn't change that. Simply because, who know when you'll want to put the character in a cavalry unit, etc?

I share the same concern with this question, and I will add another question that is of relevance. If a mounted character, presumably on a steed with a 25x50 mm base, were to join a unit, would it be ok to make two of said infantry to place behind him on 25x25mm bases? This way, with another twenty figures on the normal 20x20mm bases, will be able to rank up nicely around him.

THis is what I mean:

M = Mounted character
I = Infantry on a 25x25 base
B = Infantry within said unit
M/I = Mounted and 25x25 Figure

B B M B B
B B M B B
B B M/I B B
B B I B B
B B I B B

Which I think is fine, and in the game of sportsmanship it should be a opening that isn't used to pull a fast one on your opponent.

Generally because it means the character has a 2+ armour save and an extra S3 / S4 attack from the mount, without having to use the points from their magic allowance. Personally I don't like how it looks, so I wouldn't do it, but that doesn't deny it can be very helpful tactically.

It has always been legal. In 6th edition, they would be a viable target for missile fire, making it a poor choice, except to try protecting the unit itself. In 7th, they removed the clause that allowed models on larger bases to be targeted within units, so as long as your character is not US5, it can sit in a unit and not be picked out by magic missiles/missile fire.
