While I agree that Zombies for most tasks are better, there is still merit to taking skellies. Mostly as minimum sized objective holders, but that is not nothing as you don't want to be protecting your back objectives with a big horde of zombies (they need to go hunt for some brains :D )
I can't find a job for skellies that either fell bats can't do just as well for less points, or zombies can't do better! Skellies sitting on a rear objective will be wiped off the board by anyone who is determined to take the objective, so you might as well use fell bats for less points and not give up a battle tactic as not battleline.

Man I want a reason and a way to use Vargheists and Fell Bats so badly. Sadly the bats aren’t battleline at all.

The fell bats not being battleline is a huge plus, as if they were they would be a total liability giving away broken ranks whenever the opponent didn't have a better battle tactic to choose. As it is, I think they are a good unit - they are fast and cheap, and can deploy from the grave to pinch an uncontested objective.

The vargheists... Yeah, it would be cool if they became battleline under one of the bloodlines. They are a unit that I can't quite get to work. They are *sort of* vampires, but don't get The Hunger, which is sad. And because they are not summonable, you can't buff them with Crimson Feast, or heal them with Invigorating Aura/Deathly Invocation or bring them back with Endless Legions... They aren't useless, but they could be much better with either the Vampire or Summonable keyword!

I hadn’t thought of that. I love the concept and model of Vargheists and I agree with you about Fell Bats being awesome I just can’t figure out how to make room to fit them into my lists. I want to run them I just can’t really figure out how haha.

Reckon I would drop one of the Blood Knights units. You've got three credible hammers in the VLoZD, Graveguard and Bloodknights, if that isn't enough then something's gone wrong!

I might play:
VLoZD
Vampire Lord
Necromancer
Wight King on Skeletal Steed

40 Zombies
40 Zombies
10 Skeletons **
20 Graveguard
5 Bloodknights
3 Fell Bats

** There are points for 20 Zombies instead here, but you might want to keep some back for an endless spell etc. I try to take Emerald "Life"swarm if I can, healing your characters can be important given how heavily SBGL rely on the buffs their characters can give.

I guess I would play this as Legion of Blood, give the VLoZD soulbound garments and aura of dark majesty to keep him alive, and martial expertise obviously. The vampire on foot gets arcane expertise. Probably amethyst pinions for the VLoZD, soulpike for the vampire on foot, and decrepify for the necromancer.

a possible use for fellbats is to complete some battle tactic in easy mode.
a couple of units are 150 pts.

it's fairly easy to accomplish Ferocious Advance.
Even if you're forced to play defensively they will guarantee Savage Spearhead.
If an obj is guarded by 5 models, they'll have an easy time with Conquer.
Sacrifice a unit with a suicide charge for Callous Overlord

I found a way to include Fell Bats in a list:

Army Faction: Soulblight Gravelords
- Army Type: Kastelai Dynasty
- Grand Strategy: Hold the Line

LEADER

Coven Throne (290)
- Spells: Soulpike, Invigorating Aura

Vampire Lord (140)*
- Spells: Amethystine Pinions, Invigorating Aura

Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon (435)*
- General
- Command Traits: A Craving for Massacre
- Deathlance
- Artefacts: Fragment of the Keep
- Mount Traits: Foetid Miasma
- Spells: Invigorating Aura, Flaming Weapon

BATTLELINE

Blood Knights (195)*

Blood Knights (195)*

1 x Deadwalker Zombies (230)*

1 x Deadwalker Zombies (230)*

Dire Wolves (135)*

OTHER

Fell Bats (75)

Fell Bats (75)

CORE BATTALIONS:

*Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Created with Warhammer Age of Sigmar: The App

This list has a whopping 179 wounds. VLOZD and Blood Knights snowball and gain power killing stuff supported by the Coven Throne and the Footlord spams invigorating aura and deathly invocations on everything it can to keep the blocks of summonables alive.

zombies tie things up and fell bats and dire wolves run around grabbing any objectives with nothing on them.

I think my favorite thing about this list is that the units can just keep coming back. You kill my Dire Wolves but 5 more come back. What happens to fellbats since half of 3 is 1.5. Rounding up is it 2?

idk if 20 zombies means anything but if a block or 40 goes down 20 come back. I’ve never seen it in person but I imagine it’s really strong for keeping objectives to keep bringing back super fast stuff and huge numbers of stuff.

From the Endless Legions rule: "If you do so, a new replacement unit with half the number of models in the unit that was destroyed (rounding up) is added to your army." So yes, you get 3 back. Same with a minimum sized unit of Black Knights.

I like the list - here are some tweaks I would do:

  • Get Amthystine Pinions on your VLoZD. It is so important to have good mobility on this centerpiece - and you need the spell to get the fuck out of dodge if the dragon starts getting hit a lot (because its movement will get reduced when it brackets).
  • I would combine the Zombies into a single unit of 40 - as they are a bigger threat and you can benefit from command abilities easier because all 40 will be affected at the same time.
  • I would switch the Vampire Lord on foot for a Necromancer. Vampires are cool but they are quite easy to target with shooting and kill fast, whereas the Necromancer will stick around forever as long as it is close to the Zombies.
  • Given that you seem to want to run the Blood Knights and the Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon together you might want to change the Command Trait for your general to Swift and Deadly, that way your Blood Knights also gets more reliable charges.

Cheers,
Sunny
