After painting and modeling black templar for the past 3 years, and khornate space marines for 4 years, I've decided to do something different. I've loved the fantasy setting since I was 8 years old, but all my buddies have always played 40k. I went to my local hobby shop and bought the vampire counts army book and a bestial vampire lord. I got him home, primed him black, and I'm having a helluva time painting the thing. I've been painting power armor for so long, I've no idea how to paint dead, pasty flesh and fuse it with his wings, any advice would help greatly as I'm sitting here staring at a bland wing, using all my power armor tricks to try and make it look good, it just doesn't look organic. His body and head both look fine, but this wing is really giving me trouble. Thanks for reading!

Well, firstly how are you going to or how have you painted the armor of the Vampire, and secondly are you looking to paint the flesh to complement or contrast the armor of the miniature. I would recommend however to paint the flesh in a pallid tone, perhaps starting with dark grey and building up to a marble greyish-white.

I started with a base of Chaos black and built on that with Dheneb Stone, then Rotting Flesh. After that I Flesh Washed the skin and dry brushed it with Bleached Bone followed by Skull White highlighting. The wing I wanted to be tinged with black, so I faded the pallid tone of his skin into a steady blend of Hormagaunt Purple and Bleached Bone, increasing the volume of HP through the flesh of the wing-arm, only thing is, the blend looks very artificial as I have zero practice fading one color into another, also, the wing itself is currently black, and while I want to keep the "fingers" a darker, sickly color, the webbing itself I'm going to make look fleshy, as the whole frostbitten wing look I was going for failed miserably.

The armor of the Vampire is Chaos Black, coated with a 1:1 wash of water and Chaos Black, highlighted with Adeptus Battlegrey and Astronomicon Grey, with a Tin Bitz base coated trim build up to Shining Gold and dry brushed with Mithril Silver, giving it a very tarnished, rusted look. The armor is easy enough, I just have very little practice with flesh, all my marines are helmeted and I don't use daemons, so I've just about never painted a fleshy part. I wanted the armor to contrast with the flesh.

Remember when painting flesh it is generally easiest to begin with a your base coat, and work up to a lighter colour by painting the higher areas of the faces and body parts features, whilst leaving the recesses darker in contrast.

To contrast with the Black Armour I would use a bleached bone basecoat, wash over with purple ink so that the areas around the mouth, sunken cheeks and eyes take on a purple tint was then re do the bone on the brow, cheekbones, nose and chin followed by an 1:1 bone and white extreme highlight on the same areas.
