I was facing Wood Elves again, for a club-game. A Dragon this time, among other things:

Highborn on Dragon with killing blow spear, Annoyance and Stone of the Crystal Mere (3+ ward save for both rider and dragon until first failed) perhaps Enchanted Shield too.
2 lvl 1 caddies, kneeling under their burden of scrolls (4 of them)
2x11 Glade Guards
3x8 Dryads
2x5 Wild Riders with full command
1 Treeman
5 Waywatchers

Again, terrain pieces scattered into the center and cluttered up the board, wich seem to be a recurring theme of my games with this army. I chose the left corner to deploy in, as it was fairly open, and I wanted a corner anyway to avoid being totally outplayed, flanked and ganked, while getting the most out of the Cursed Book.

1,3,4,5 spells on my Lady, 1,3 and 1,2 on my lvl2's.

So Ghouls up to screen, Skellies with Lady central flanked by Guards, bunker behind Skellies, Bats and Wolves behind lines.

First turns saw me not movin, miscasting twice (wounding a necro and killing 5 Zombies) and raising a couple of new Zombie units. One to my left to shut down Dryads and Treeman from squeezing themselves between the table edge and my left flank, and providing a speedbump, and one to my right flank, to devoid the Dragon a free spot from where to land and breathe at will.

He did so anyway flying in on my right flank, presenting it's own flank to my raised little unit and breathing on my War Banner Guards, before I charged him and managed to raise into the unit (Irresistible Force). Combat was a draw. He was helped by a unit of Wild Riders smacking into the flank of the Zombies to whipe them out, as my Fell Bats had melted after a poor show of combat incapability. (Frank's saves with Wild Riders during the match was incredible, he made armour and ward saves like there was no tomorrow.) Banshee screamed 'BOX CARS!' at the Dragon, this made him so afraid that it took two wounds, after failing the third ward save (roll them one at a time folks).

Ghouls were caught by the other WR's, (barely making a charge through difficult terrain) and they overran into the flank of my War Guards who just had turned right to charge the Dragon. The War Guards were held in check for several rounds of combat.

Meanwhile, my second unit of Ghouls advanced to screen, divert and delay Dryads and Treeman, doing a good job at it, backed up by my raised Zombies which I increased a little in size.

I thought my Lady had a shot at winning over the Dragon unit so I turned my Skellies to the right and made some space so the Dragon could land, temping it. I arranged so my Lady was on the corner next to the champ, so he wouldn't be able to avoid it.

Necros left the bunker as I couldn't protect it any longer, Cursed Book one joining the Lady's Skellies and BoA one moving behind it. The Barrow Guards wheeled to avoid presenting their flanks to the Dragon.

True enough, Frank took the bait and went in on the Skellies. Dryads charged my flanked War Guards in the front, but only two made it all the way. The other WR's, now down to champ and standard bearer, had fought off another 5 Fell Bats and this time charged a new unit of Zombies, they would be standing there until the end of the match.

This time War Guards came out on top (you got to love the Cursed Book), breaking Wild Riders in their flank, even if the Dryads held. Frank challenged and my Skellie champ took one for his Lady, buying her time (and him losing the S5 of the spear for the next round) me winning combat (I had increased the unit) but he made the break test.

Wolves ran out to get advancing Dryads and Treeman into positions I wanted, while left raised Zombies and Barrow Guards prepared flanking manouvres, or being charged, either was good. The Treeman could perhaps squeeze past the Wolves to flank my Skellies, so this round of combat would be crucial.

Frank wasted his last scroll to stop Hellish Vigour on my Skellies, but he couldn’t stop me from raising Zombies and rear charging the Dragon with the Book of Arkhan. Banshee put another wound on the Dragon, down to 3 wounds now.
War Guards beat Dryads but they held. Frank challenged again, and my Lady accepted. I could’ve answered with my necro, but I’d rather have him alive with his Cursed Book in following rounds. So I stepped up, and looked at her magic stuff on my Armybuilder sheet. What’s this, Beguile? Oh, right, a test on 9 to avoid mesmerization! After rolling an eleven, the Highborn could only stare at her dark beauty, while she gave him an ugly cut over the cheek (made one attack through the Annoyance). We had a little discussion over Beguile and the definition of the word ‘model’. Would the Dragon be affected by the failed test or not? We took the middle ground and allowed it a separate test, which it made, but couldn’t hit my Lady. So needing Insane Courage to stand, he failed and was run down. A huge relief, until this point it was all Wood Elves. Now he would have a hard time doing enough damage on my blocks to gain more points.

Anyway, he charged in the Treeman who just fitted in the gap I mentioned, flanking my Skellies. Dryads whiped out the Wolves and overran into my Barrow Guards, the others close to my Skellies. War Guards broke their Dryads and ran them down. Treeman failed with all his attacks and then failed his stubborn test, breaking off with my Skellies just behind, pursuiting into the overrunning Dryads.

In my last turn, raised Zombies could charge Waywatchers with the help of BoA, breaking them (they would later fail to rally). I managed to cast Hellish Vigour on the Barrow Guards, but to no avail as I had six failed wound rolls. Nevertheless, they could break the Dryads. Lady and Skellies broke their Dryads, but not before they had taken the last wound off my necromancer.

Last turn saw him rally Treeman, 3 Wild Riders and 1-2 units of Dryads, turning a solid or massacre WE loss to a minor WE loss. So a VC win with 600+ points, I was glad for that.

For the Lady! :)

Great battle, makes up for my last battle against a Wood Elf Dragon, wish my opponent had given me as easy a time as yours did! Bet he wishes he'd taken Hail of Doom Arrow, which would have killed that Banshee on turn one. Makes me feel all that much worse that I forgot to try and Beguile the Dragon when my Lady was in combat with it though (Model does mean the whole model, so one failed test means neither rider nor mount can attack)!

I'm impressed that the raised and Booked Zombies defeated the Waywatchers at the end, I tried it once and lost 4 of the attacking Zombies (The rest crumbled) when they charged in thanks to the Elves' dual hand weapons...

Thanks for your reply :)

To be able to get HoDA he has to sacrifice two scrolls, not a good trade, especially as you're down to BS 4 from 6. And I'm not so stupid that I'd deploy her in Wood Elf LOS, she was deployed behind a farm, and the Dragon landed nearby. She bought it before the end (I'd forgotten about that) at a charge from the instoppable Wild Riders, (the same unit that accounted for 10 Fell Bats and freeing the Dragon from Zombies). I traded her life for a second scream at the Dragon.

The Zombies that saw off the Waywatchers had been increased to around 15, at the time of combat they were down to 11 IIRC. He rolled below average, lost by 1-2 points and failed the snake eyes.

Ahh, I'd have thought he could fit it on the Dragon rider somewhere, but I guess all those extra trinkets didn't leave him with the spare points. Very risky putting your Lady into combat with a Killing Blow character (Even if he is hitting on 5s, if an enemy character looks at my Lady she tends to wither and die), nice when it pays off though.
