It was a quiet night. As the countless men of the imperium scampered around, the wind dropped down to a light breeze. Captain T.Yuralis took up the post of lookout, not that anyone was expecting a attack. "quiet night tonight, ey?" muttered Major Julias.
"yeah, you could probably hear a pin drop out in this wilderness." whispered Yuralis. He put down the night vision binoculars on the small table infront of him, and sighed. It had been a long night and it was only midnight. "Hey Colonal, do you have anything to drink down there?" asked Yuralis.
"naah we ran out of stuff about an hour ago, god knows how long until we get any more." came the answer in a shuddering voice, it was winter and tommorow would be christmas day, the men's families would be asleep in bed looking forward to at least one happy day in their lives.

"We have something on radar!" said Major Julias. The Captain ran to him and leaned over the small monitor, true there was a small form showing up on every beep the radar emitted. "what is it?" Asked Yuralis. "probably a cow but i'll send out a patroll squad just to make sure." whispered Julias.

2 HOURS LATER

"Any news from the patroll squad?" said Yuralis. No answer, the Major was stood looking over the wall. "come and look for yourself." croaked Julias. The Captain walked over to the dark figure and looked over the wall. "Oh god." The Patroll squad, or what was left of them, was being carried on the shoulders of a dozen men. Their skin had been striped from their bodies and the men's oozing insides were shining in the harsh electric light. "what could have done this?" whispered Yuralis. " the medics have told us that the only weapon capable of causing so much damage are gauss flayers."

"We need backup! now! we are being confronted by unknown beings!" The voice coming from the Alpha 1 radio was soon drowned by the sound of several screams. "I repeat Backup is needed now!" The sounds were cut off by a stream of static. "could you trace where it was coming from?" Said Major Julias urgently. "yes it came from down by the east wing." came the answer. "right i'm going down there with my best men, you should come aswell Captain."
"Yes Major, on my way."

The two men hurried down several corridors and finally came to the east wing, the Major's men came not long after. "Ok are we all prepared for what might be out there?" asked Julias, "I hope you are because whatever it is it took out an entire patroll squad and a entire command squad, we're lucky that our commander wasen't in that squad at the time!" He walked along the line of men checking that every one was here. " we are joined tonight by Captain Yuralis, i ask that you pay him good respect. Now we wait for the gate keeper's signal and we go!" They waited for over five minutes. A bell rang at the top of the gate. "Ok ready to go men!" The squad of Imperial men stepped out of the strange calmness of the fort and into a world of chaos.

"Captain?" The voice echoed over the burnt land. Julias stood up and walked away from the dead body of Captain Yuralis. The grey land was now black with ash and hundreds of burnt bodies. It was Christmas day. No-one forgot that day yet now hundreds of men had fallen prey to the creatures that attacked on the supposed day of a great man's birth. The Major picked up his pistol and his power sword. They were still out there he could sense them. The night had been terrifing, the flashing images of the night flickered in his eyes over and over. Streaks of green light and the screams of men as they were flayed alive, and then the thunderous heatbeat as hundreds of skeletral metal forms rose from the sand and marched forth with a unending wanting for death.

The Major looked around. He couldn't see anything, just blank, burnt landscape. It was only the low buzz of electricity that alerted him of something behind him. Julias span round while swinging his power sword right up, just in time to block the attacker's great blade. The attacker itself was a mighty figure, like a skeleton in basic form but it had emerald fire burning in it's empty eye sockets. The creature's face showed intelligance that had lasted for counless millenia and it's ripped grey cloak was swirling around it's body without any wind. The beast raised it's great weapon high and swung it down with huge force. It cut The Majors power sword in half without slowing for a second, then with no hesitation it hit into Julias's chest, driving his heart, lungs and ribs crashing backwards through his muscle and skin on the other side, his spin snapped with a loud crack and Major Julias fell to the floor as not much more than a sack of bones.

I hope you enjoyed that, just a little story. If you hadn't guessed the 'Creatures' were necrons. Please comment
