If it is a close friend i would tell him or her next time he or she does it you will not play with them for X ammount of days and if they do it after you X ammount of days you increase the time you won't play with him. Like if he does cheat after you warned him or her don't play for a month and after that if they do it again don't play for 2 months.

if its a measurement i would say that that was wrong (usually people moving things too far) and make them re-do whatever or move units back a suitable distance.
picking up extra dice is a hard one to keep track of and to notice but if you do just say confidently you picked up a "whatever" or a couple of "whatevers" and they will usually put them back
cheating a rule i would get them to get out all their rules and show the relevant bits to me (especially when i know they are utterly wrong)

I wouldnt normally actually accuse them of cheating but if you treat your opponent with a stern face and a firm hand, they get the message and usually stop. I prefer to do it this way as sometimes there is some genuine errors (like knocking over an unsuccessful dice and then accidentally picking it up due to its new facing). if they are a chronic cheater however and no treatment like this will work then i would actually accuse them of cheating and refuse to play them after the game. (most of the time i would still finish and strive to beat them without cheating so they end up with a massive ammount of disattisfaction. it is important however if you do this to try to make a close game next time if you know they arent cheating otherwise they feel a need to)

I would probably still do this with a close friend. I am good friends with most of my opponents so i imagine i would stay the same. the other thing to do is try to change the culture of the game from winning to having fun.

I'll admit i used to be a regular cheat, things like extra dice and the like and the two things that changed my ways for me was not getting any satisfaction out of my games through to the hollowness of cheating and the game style of my store changing from giving it your all to win to a far more experimental style of play aimed to try all the options and combinations of our lists.

In my opinion, honesty is the best policy. Tell them they knocked over that dice, or that no, they cannot do that within the rules, etc, or that no, they cannot roll that many dice, etc.

I expect my opponents to try and cheat,so I watch them like a hawk.I don't take it personally,it's just human nature.
It may seem cynical, but it's an observation from years of playing RPGs.No matter how honest a person is in their normal life,if you let them roll up their characters attributes unobserved...90% of people will cheat, even if it's just by re-rolling or turning a single die...and don't get me started on saving throws

Cheaters are stupid and I tell them so. IMHO if someone feels the need to cheat then they are not the type of person I want to play in the first place. Luckily I have only come across 1 cheater in Beijing and funilly enough he is the only guy from England that I know who plays here, I just didn't ask him to play again.
All my other chums are in it for fun and using their new "dome hammers" on you for the first time and such and we all generally call each other out a few times each game just for the hell of it.

"where did you get that rule from, did you just pull it outa your arse?" xD :zombie:

I don't know if I've ever played with anybody who's tried to openly cheat. My opponents usually know that I'm a moderator here, so I guess they either assume they won't be able to slip anything past my knowledge of the rules, or they're just genuinely good people. Personally, I always feel like I've cheated when a simple rules mistake works to my advantage. I just feel kinda dirty, and I typically try for a rematch soon after to redeem myself.

I feel that if someone is deliberatly being blind to me doing the wrong thing, they aren't a good friend, so the friend thing isn't a difficult choice for me at all.

Well, with stuff like dice rolls, I simply ask my opponent to roll their dice where we can both see them, and then to pick-up all the 'failed' rolls.
If they refuse, then obviously they're the type who're used to fudging the results, so I'll know to watch them closely.
When it comes to measuring, I'll try and watch how they're measuring - if it's awkward or somewhat confusing, I'll again polietly ask them if they wouldn't mind just measuring say 'front-to-front' because my scambled brain can't keep track of much these days! (8 concusions to that to you ya know!.)

Basically, if they are your friend, they shouldn't have a problem with simple, friendly requests like that! If they throw a fit or start give you the 'evil-eye', then they're likely the kind of person I really don't want to be good friends with anyways... (I also find for example, they're typically the ones who ask to borrow 'X' item and then you never see it again!)

As for other games, well... When I played competitive hockey and I'd take a cheap shot or I see a teammate get whacked by a dirty play, I'd take the other player's number, and later on line 'em up for a nice, solid open-ice hipcheck! (a lost art nowadays in all honesty)
After being sent flying & getting winded, they'll at least be a bit more hesitent at taking another cheap shot the next time...
Worst comes to worse and it's say someone taking out a teammate from behind into the boards, (or god forbid the goalnet), if I'm on the ice I'll simply grab 'em and start punching!
Hockey is how I vent my anger issues!:innocent:

Cheers!

I am naturally a blunt person anyway, so I would just say it straight out. With dice etc I would just ask them to re-roll, and if they are trying to blatantly lying about rules I'd tell them to stop bullshitting me.

Luckily most people who know are aware I am like that, so they don't really try anything with me in case they get caught out. A lot of people don't like it when they are called out.

If the person is big enough to own up, apologise etc then I am happy enough to move on and carry on with the game, and even play with them again.

If someone is childish, has a tantrum etc I'll just pack up my models and play someone else. I won't waste my time on someone like that.

With my friends we usually give each other the benefit of the doubt that they just measured incorrectly or misinterpreted a rule, which case we just remeasure or bring out our rule books. With our one friend though, we all watch him like a hawk because he is a ridiculous power gamer that tries to interpret rules favorably for him, sometimes even when he knows it doesn't make sense or he knows its wrong in which case we basically scold him and belittle his reading skills and the like.

As for against people from the store, only one person has ever tried cheating in a game with me (as far as I know, I'm a pretty trusting person) and he was basically stretching out a rule or two and played it off as a misunderstanding. I pretty much let it go and started to watch him very closely so that the game would just continue since I had work and wanted to finish the game. After the game though, my friend, a GW worker and another player all gave the guy I was playing a "oh yeah, misunderstanding huh? Has nothing to do with Fritz's(me) skeletons, riiiight." He didn't come in for a few weeks after that, we talked about it a bit here and there for a few weeks after the game, a few people thought I was to soft on him and should've just said something more, but they realized why I didn't after I reminded them that it was a game for my friend's campaign and he was there to see it first hand, so now the GM is watching him and all the other players see him as a cheater, the guy quit the campaign the next time he came in. As long as everything works out I'm good with just going with the flow, I'd rather not be standing there scolding someone especially when they can make themselves look like an ass in front of the gaming community.

An interesting article I read about tournament preparation, includes how to deal with cheats.

I'd like to think I'm really fair where it concerns cheating but I have a limit and once reached...
When I notice it the first time I won't immediately jump down their throats, not even tell them about it, but be more aware of "funny stuff". If it happens again I'll ask them nicely to play normal but only one time, if it happens again after that I'll pack up and leave.

I had a guy in a Vampire The Masquerade rpg group who always rolled his D10's behind his hands claiming that his dice would roll of the book on his lap otherwise. His character never failed until I told everybody rolls will be made on the dinner table, open for everyone to see. Suddenly he started getting more normal dice results. I took him apart from the group to talk about it afterwards after which he left and never came back. Good riddance.
