I was operating out of interest of conserving our members' bandwidth, DoN. Not everyone's got top-of-the-line fancy stuff like you do. :clown:

Anyway, I think I might have arrived at my wanted starting premise. Hear this out... (PS, it turned out longer than I thought it would!)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

There was once upon a time, in a far and distant land (or perhaps not that distant. I haven't really decided yet), a kingdom that was ravaged time and time again by an ancient vampire. Said to resemble a hulking beast more than anything else, the monster was seemingly uninterested in claiming the land for itself and untold thousands were slain and devoured by the beast as it periodically rampaged through the land. Ghastly creatures followed in its wake, and the kingdom was in dire peril.

The beast was not unstoppable, though - there had been heroes from far and wide across the world that had come to take the fight to the vampire and, while most of them ended up as unholy servants to the fiend, some managed to destroy it. But only temporarily, for within a century the vampire would emerge once again, brought back to the earthly plane through some unfathomable means, free to exert its terror and evil power over the hapless inhabitants of the kingdom.

Several times was the beast ended, and several times did the beast then reappear. Drawn to their hope's end, the then ruling king decided that the finest smiths and artisans of the kingdom would fashion a grand statue in resemblance to their god and protector (name/deity undecided), envisaged as a powerful knightly figure with a helmet crested in the likeness of an owl, sage and all-knowing. The king then summoned the most powerful wizards and sorcerers from across the land and bade them to use their mystic powers to bring the mighty avatar to life so that it could seek the vampire out and destroy it once and for all.

And so it was made, and the animated construct was sent on its way to smite the evil and darkness that festered in the night. The king and all of his royal army followed the walking image of their god as it strode across the kingdom, slaying shadowy beasts where it found them, until it eventually came across the lair of the vampire, deep inside a cavernous crevasse. The struggle between the two immensely powerful beings was brief, as the vampire soon brought its own dark magicks to bear on the avatar, summoning forth hordes of minions that threatened to overwhelm the kingdom's foremost champion. The accompanying army of the king was not late to intervene, however, and battle was joined in earnest.

When the ranks of both armies started growing thin, the king and most of his noble guard lay dead on the cavern floor, and it was growing more and more certain that the vampire's forces would prevail in this most crucial of events. The wizards that had animated the living statue arrived at the scene just in time to see the vampire rip the head off the stone avatar, and in final desperation they pulled on all their combined might to undo the awakening of the construct in a storm of coruscating energy. The cavern was bathed in light that displayed nothing but burned and charred corpses once it had dissipated. Everything lay in ruins, save for the enchanted statue which stood motionless in the middle of the underground hall.

The surviving wizards inched closer to inspect the only thing still standing after the explosion-like backlash of magic, and found that the arcane essence hurriedly escaping from the avatar had trapped the vampire inside the inanimate shell. The beast shrieked and howled, but its power was to no avail as the enchantments placed on the surface of the statue nullified its dark wizardry. The wizards swiftly had the statue embellished with yet more seals and wards to ensure that it would remain like a coffin of stone for the monster that had plagued their land for so long, and the cavern was collapsed to finally wipe the threat of the vampire out from existence.

Trapped like it was, the vampire succumbed to all manners of insanity as the centuries passed by, until it simply withered away inside its statue casket.

To be continued...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So yeah, that kinda sets the scene up for your classic 'necromancer wants a wight king bodyguard' story, only this time the wight king is actually the faded remains of an ancient vampire trapped inside a living statue made of enchanted stone. Needless to say, the necromancer gets eaten or otherwise disposed of, and the ancient horror is once again free to mess with the free and living. :clown:

Let me know what you think of it, those brave few who can get through all that text. ;)
