Notable changes and highlights
- The 8th Edition Lizardmen book refined one of Warhammer’s oldest and most distinctive armies — the cold-blooded servants of the Old Ones.
- The lore expanded their cosmic purpose: the Lizardmen were now depicted as ancient guardians of order, struggling to interpret the Old Ones’ “Great Plan” as the world descended further into Chaos.
- This edition leaned into their alien nature — cold, ritualistic, and emotionless — contrasting them against the corruption of Chaos and the arrogance of Elves.
- Geographically, the book detailed more of Lustria, its ruined temple-cities, and the mysterious continent’s relationship with the rest of the Warhammer world.
- The connection between the Slann Mage-Priests and the Old Ones was deepened, suggesting the Slann were effectively demi-gods left behind to maintain reality itself.
Rules and army design
- The Lizardmenretained their combined-arms identity — sturdy infantry, monstrous beasts, and powerful magic — but gained several new tools and refinements:
- The Slann Mage-Priest remained one of the most powerful casters in Warhammer, but disciplines were reworked into purchasable upgrades rather than fixed traits.
- Cold-Blooded and Predatory Fighterremained core themes:
- Cold-Blooded kept their unmatched leadership reliability.
- Predatory Fighter introduced an extra attack mechanic on 6s to hit, improving offensive potential for Saurus units.
- Ancient Stegadons, Bastiladons, and Troglodons joined the army roster, adding both magical and monstrous support.
- The Bastiladon became a fan favourite — a slow but heavily armoured beast equipped with either a Solar Engine (a ranged light-beam weapon) or Ark of Sotek (snake swarm generator).
- Ripperdactyl Riders were introduced, bringing a more aggressive alternative to Terradons with their “Blot Toad” marking mechanic.
- Skink Priests and Skink Chiefs gained more defined battlefield roles as scouts, support casters, and monster handlers.
- The book maintained the army’s unique synergy between the small, cunning Skinks and the large, brutal Saurus.
- Magic remained central to their gameplay — the Slann could dominate the phase, but now had to balance cost and specialisations carefully.
Community reception
- The Lizardmen 8th Edition book was positively received overall, though with moderate enthusiasm compared to flashier releases like Dark Elves or Warriors of Chaos.
- Lore and artwork were highly praised — players appreciated the rich worldbuilding around the Old Ones and the more mystical tone.
- The model range update (especially the Bastiladon and Ripperdactyls) was seen as visually striking and thematically fitting.
- On the tabletop, the army was considered solid and balanced, though not dominant:
- Slann-led armies remained among the most powerful magic users in the game.
- Monster-heavy “dinosaur lists” were fun and cinematic but not always tournament-viable.
- Some veterans missed the quirky unpredictability of older editions, finding 8th Edition’s version more restrained and systematic.
- Overall, it was seen as a strong and faithful modernization — maintaining the Lizardmen’s identity as disciplined, ancient warriors of order amidst the madness of the Warhammer world.
