Over the weekend I managed to get my hands on a couple of the new Mortarch's and painted them up. Over the week I'll be posting up photos and have a meander through Gothic literary fiction and where the Warhammer Vampire fit in.

First up we have Vlad Von Carstein - the apex predator and patriarch of the Von Carstein bloodline, newly resurrected from the afterlife. This model has been on my hit list since it was first released. I like to view this model as a two dimensional piece akin to the early casts GW made where they were only able to produce two mould sets for their models (think of the original Njal Stormbringer, Ragnar Blackmane, or the original Vlad). Vlad heralded a new look for the Vampire range, moving away from the frilly, flouncy attired gothic horror to something all together more unique to suit the look of the warhammer world.

I went for the classic combination of red, gold and black. Sometimes it pays to do things simply and I didn't want to over complicate the look of the model with an unusual paint scheme. The armour was blended up from pure black with Com Art Medea grey, then white, washed with turquoise and finally re-applying these layers for a high sheen finish.

The cloak on the other hand had a very dull gradual blend as if the faces inside were writhing slowly in agony.

Man, screw you.

I mean this in the nicest way possible.

I don't think I'll ever understand how you did all that awesome work in a weekend.

Vlad von Carstein is one of my favourite characters in the Warhammer world. You make me sad that I'll never be able to do him the kind of justice shown here. Seriously though, superb work. He looks just as he should, the perfect union of regal and bestial.

@lillegend - How sturdy do you find the new mortarch on abyssal kits to be? With the full model balancing on what look to be some very long, thin supports, I've had some concerns.
I can't imagine there will be a big problem. GW seem to know what they're doing with this. The big issue I've heard with them is that you need to paint bits before assembly.

In answer to the sturdy question, I think they will be okay but kinda springy. It's just supported by the tail and 2 of the spirits on the base. As long as you don't get to rough with it I think it will work just fine.

I love the residual magical swirl effect on the bases. I'm assuming your a wiz with an airbrush.

What kind of airbrush and compressor do you use to do this work.

He's a commission painter, he'll never give away his secrets xD. I think they look very nice, but I personally don't like the look of airbrushed models.

I'm going to go against the grain here a bit... don't shoot me down...

I think it looks too "machined", too perfect. You obviously airbrushed it, which is fine, but I don't like airbrushing, it feels like cheating. I think the base is a little bit unimaginative as well. Overall it's a good "professional" standard, but there's no personal flair really. The lettering on the book is good though, and despite my dislike for airbrushing I think you achieved the transition of colours nicely.
