So inspired by Lord Tremendous on YouTube, I'm thinking if converting Arkhans Dread Abyssal into a zombie dragon for my Undead Legion / Tomb Counts army.

Looking at the kit, my first thought is to add wings to it. But I'm not sure what wings I could use that would fit with its contructy theme. So far I've considered necrosphinx and terrorgheist wings, but neither seems quite right. Any suggestions?

Still working on what I'll use for the vampire rider. Probably a head swap onto Arkhan or Neferata. Mannfred is too gothic to be workable.

The spirit host from a mortis engine is about the same size as the terrorgheist wings, and has a very wing like profile. I would suggest using some pins to support its weight and greenstuffing them to look like the ghostly flames for the Morghast wings for structural support. It would give it the impression of being carried aloft on a spirit host.

Just got out my mortis engine and dread abyssal parts and tried it for size, the base of the spirit host would need to be fairly high up in its flap, if that makes sense, to make the spirits look like they're not running sideways and would need a bit of greenstiff to blend it, probably a lot of skulls too.

The ghostly horses, you mean? Cool idea, but the armoured ghosts are still a bit too gothic for my Nehekharan theme.

I do like the spirit wings though. I think I'll pick up the kit later this week and play around with it to see what I can figure out. The spirit hosts on the base might be a good base / guide.

Other suggestions still welcome.

The Necrosphinx come with a pair of artificial wings, perhaps those would fit? You should be able to bitz buy them through eBay.

Edit: Oh, sorry, now I see you've already tried them... oh well, I'll be back if I think of something else for ya.

Strongly considering the necrosphinx wings. Not entirely convinced that they'll work well though. They're a bit too blocky, and honestly I'm not even sure how well they work for the necrosphinx. I have an extra one (not two...destroyed another in a defunct conversion project...ugh), and I'm going to try it out and see how it fits when I get a chance to pick up the kit.

Funnily enough, I actually have another terrorgheist sitting on my shelf right now, still wrapped. However neither model really fits very well with my egyptian-themed Khemric vampires. The zombie dragon is still too gothic and not particularly Egyptian-themed, and the terrorgheist is even worse. I've extensively converted my terrorgheist out of the kit, and just don't have it in me to do that for a second model. Plus I'd like a bit more diversity, and the dread abyssals are great looking kits. Not a huge fan of the riders, but that's easily fixed.

I'd just use them as-is, but my group is kind of wary about proxies. So I really just need to suitably convert the model so that it won't be confused for one of the mortarchs.

One thing that would help you differentiate between them is to give your ZD lord the correct base. 100x150 instead of the mortarchs' chariot base. That should strengthen your case at least a little bit.

Oh of course. It's more about differentiating the model beyond just the base, though. Plus helping it fill out all that space. The arachnarok base is huge.

Between a new rider, adding some wings and using a bigger base size I think you should be able to evade any confusion. The only thing I can think about for the base is more skulls, perhaps you could make it look like additional fuel for the beast. It's pretty much full of them already.

The Dread Abyssal has skulls in it? I never noticed it has skulls in it. They must be subtle skulls in it. That's a good place for skulls. In it.

Seriously, why did they sculpt all those skulls in it? Oy..

Dread abyssals eat the souls of sinners in the underworld, so the skulls are meant to represent the souls trapped in their bellies?

Artistically it seems they were going for a style that combined the wispy etherealness of the VC with the blocky construct feel of the TK. What they got is a construct full of souls, with spirits rising up beneath them.

I used to tink they were silly, but I've seen some paint schemes where they really work. I've come around on them.

Personally I feel the terrorghiest wings would be the best fit, the problem is though that it will require green stuffing and allot of remodeling to make it work as the kits are not close enough to each other in nature.
Hell even the Dark Elf Dragon wings would work if worked into the model correctly.
Unfortunately this is not just going to be a simple kit bash.
