I'm really curious to read about what my more experienced brethren think is the future of this Death sub-faction. I love the models, but as it stands, they don't really make any sense. The Start Collecting! box includes a model that isn't in the faction as described in the General's Handbook, the list is almost entirely summonable and includes a model that is buffed by spellcasters, but does not include any wizards.

I think it's a great faction - I bought the Start Collecting box and I can't wait to get paint on all the models - but I'm really stumped about where it's headed. Has anyone here got any suspicions or juicy rumors?

The Mortis Engine should absolutely be a night haunt. The necromancer should be a deathwalker. The death mage faction shouldn't exist.

Yes and yes, though I could see some kind of rule where necromancers can be slotted into multiple other subfactions.

The Nighthaunts also need some kind of wizard. Maybe a ghost mage of some kind?

They will surely create ''new'' units with the one we already have so a hero/wizard nighthaunt mortis engine is a strong possibility! that would be nice to have new models but i don't think games workshop will do it if we look at what they did with the flesh eater courts faction

You might be right. But... the thing is, the Flesh Eaters line already included a big multi-part plastic kit (Crypt Horrors) and a leader who could be assembled on foot or on a dragon. That gave them the ability to add several new unit (Tomb Flayers, Tomb Haunter and Tomb Infernal Courtiers). Add in an extra courtier made from a bog-standard model, just based or painted distinctively (Crypt Ghast Courtier) and you've got the beginnings of a solid army.

If we look at what the Nighthaunts/Malignants haven't got nearly as fertile ground. I suppose we could see a unit or "courtier" type hero coming out of a combination of the black knights and hexwraiths kits. We could see some sort of alternate profile for the hexwraith or banshee. I don't really think there are any alternate ways to assemble the mortis engine that make any sense and you can't base the corpsemaster separately - his robe has the shape of the steps under him in front. I also can't think of any other ways to assemble the spirit hosts.

So you might be right, but I disagree. I think if we're going to see the Nighthaunts/Malignants become a faction in the manner of the Flesh Eaters, we're going to need to see at least one or two added kits.

The Coven Throne's bits would be mixed with the mortis engine. Having a one of the pallid handmaidens and a corpse master or the cauldron with blood mixed with the rest of the mortis engine for example. Beastclaw raiders got a lot of variations out of their one monster model.

Hm. I really hope that not too much of the new faction is reliant on mortis engine variants. I already built most of mine and don't want to have to buy another...

lol GW wants you to have to buy another of all their kits. That's pretty much the only reason they are making these faction books that don't have new models in them.

I don't know if that's the only reason. The books have some cool art and background content as well, plus some of us like to have a book in hand, and it's really convenient to have your army rules and your rule "book" in one volume.

Demilich, I like it xD It would be easy to model - also a reason why GW will never make something like this ;)

Well, I've since been convinced that it's incredibly OP as I wrote it... but yeah. A floating skull with some misty glow effects. That said, I bet GW would do an awesome job of a demilich if they decided to.

It seems very similar to lord Kroak. He's very powerful but also pretty expensive. The thing I like best is its ability to make deathmages part of nighthaunt. Whatever you end up doing with him I'd keep that.
