Good point. I may actually keep with doomed minions in my next game, but on my foot-slogging vampire lord. I like the idea of charging him into a unit or two, followed up with blood knights and/or grave guard.

Okay, so I have played a couple times with the aforementioned list and won big both times. So I like it, and will probably keep playing it, but I also want to explore an alternative take on the list (see below). The idea here is to get a bit more utility in the form of a Galletian Champion with Tunnel Master and a Corpse Cart to buff Neffy to +2 casting. The Necro will be a throw-away-unit that I can score Cunning Maneuvre with - I will glad pay 90 points for automatically getting a Battle Tactic. He also synergizes with the Corpse Cart, just to get even more mileage out of that +1 to cast bubble. The 10 Skellies are a cheap screen that I can pop out from a gravesite or use to zone out enemy ambushes. Given that I have cut away 5 Black Knights I do not know if the mounted WK is worth it anymore?

Let me know what you think!

FINALLY!!!

today had my first game with the new handbook. Yeah, a little late but you know, life has its timing.
I went against Fyreslayers

Legions of blood

Leaders:
VLoZD
(440) *
- general: Doomed Minions
- artefact: Cloack of mist
Spell: Vile Transference

Vampire lord (130) *
Spell: spirit gale
Wight king (135) *
Wight King on steed (160) **

Battlelines
10 x Black Knights (220) *
10 x Black Knights (220)
*10 x skeletons (85) *
20 x Zombies (115) *
20 x Zombies (115) *

Other:
20 x Grave Guards (280) *
Fell Bats (85) **

1985 pts

My magical phase went awful, in 3 turns i was able to successfully cast a single spirit gale.
And that was somehow helpful in seeing how we perform if something goes wrong and... men, what a blast.

The double black knights supported by the WK is a train of pain, really hard to stop. And screening doesn't work that well, as you can even afford a charge with a single unit, keeping the other one as "reserve" for a countercharge if the opponent tries to bog down in combat the first unit.

The Grave Guards with the WK and VL afoot just wreck things. it's a frail unit, but they are such a dangerous block that they force your opponent to plan how to counter them. Probably an easy and primary target against shooting armies.

and a VLoZD with unmodifiable save 3+ and the new healing, is now MUCH more a tank (with teeth)

The funny thing? i wasn't able to score my Grand Strategy (bring back 3 summonable units), but there was no need for it.

Solid book, plenty of interesting things.

That’s awesome Unas the slayer ! I really like your list! Congratulations on the win. Nice to see that you can beat up a good melee army like Fyreslayers. What list did your opponent bring?

Triple magmadroth, 3 heroes afoot and a bunch of units.
I was able to give him first turn.
One obj in each deployment zone and 2 in the middle.
He went forward to control the central obj, keeping the magmadroth in reserve for countercharge.
BK on the left and VLoZD proceeded to chomp away the wing, grabbing control of the obj, then immediate double turn and at that point i was also able to charge in the middle with the grave guards.
In his second turn he was basically left with the 3 magmadroths and the heroes afoot.
15 grave guards killed, 5 black knight gone, VLoZD down to 11.
But in the third turn priority was mine.

If I can take a shot in the dark:

VLoZD, Grave Guard and the Wight King on Steed+Black Knights

More or less.
The gg killed 10 vulkite berzerkers in my 2nd turn, but then were shred to pieces. 15 killed in the second turn by the charging magmadroth, and the rest wiped away in my third turn.

It took t2 and t3 to the vlozd to kill 1 runeson magma, and despite volcanic blood, the hunger kept him alive, healing 12 wounds.

The charges by the knights killed their magma without suffering consequences as MWs triggered by the charge don’t activate volcanic blood.

So, in his t3 , my opponent was left with 1 magmadrot and a single hero afoot. While i was still fully operational

Nice! Good point about the Black Knights not triggering the Volcanic Blood. Without shooting and limited damage spells it can be hard to get around abilities like Volcanic Blood and fight on death.

Yep, in this specific battle it was almost game changing.
anyway, It's also higly useful that the whole unit rolls the dices, even if you are in contact with only a single model. It helps a lot with board control

Yup, the concept of tagging enemy units (such as screens) with Black Knights is important and also something I am including in my handbook. It is really nifty that you can tag an enemy screen and remove it with mortal wounds and then charge past it with another unit because you are able to place the Black Knights out of the way.

Yes, it's a 600 pts combo, but it's really a great can opener with many interesting tactical options. Worth every single point

This is my updated list. I made it because I would like to run the Corpse Cart. I feel I am missing my Fell Bats but there just wasn’t room for them. Feedback much appreciated!
